This was my first visit to Laramie, Wyoming and a homecoming football game at War Memorial Stadium featuring the Wyoming Cowboys hosting the Air Force Academy Falcons. War Memorial Stadium has a capacity of 30,000 seats and...although entering this game Wyoming had an 0 - 4 record on the 2024 season, fans still came out in support. I'd say there were 25,000 people at the game. For a 6pm kickoff, they allow you inside War Memorial Stadium a full 2 hours ahead of time. This gives ample opportunities to walk around and explore what Wyoming's football venue has to offer. What was interesting about the layout here is that there are no stands or seating sections in either end zone. You either sit on the home side or visitor side. Right before entrance gates opened at 4pm, Wyoming had their pregame "Cowboy Walk" where cheerleaders and band members greeted the players arriving at the football facility. It was entertaining to watch this. Wyoming played and sang their fight songs while crowds looked on. I checked on Stubhub and TickPick for a single game ticket just for myself. Prices ranged around $50 at the cheapest. I was surprised by this considering Wyoming had gotten off to the poor 0 - 4 start. But then again...it was homecoming and it's the one game of the year that usually receives the most fan attention. Anyhow, I purchased my ticket at the University of Wyoming website for a $45 flat fee. It had me in the upper section behind Air Force's sidelines. And for a 30,000 seat stadium, pretty much anywhere you sat was a viable option. But once entering inside War Memorial Stadium, there's a cowboy statue located beside the athletic field house which presents a good photo chance. Plus, this area is where players enter and exit the field. I would assume in traditional fashion, every player touches this cowboy monument statue for good luck. What was disappointing about a late September kickoff at 6pm was the sun factor. On Wyoming's home side, fans were sitting and drenched in the heat of the sun. And from my perspective, it was impossible to take any pictures of the field with the shining light. Now...on the visiting Air Force side with the sun facing the backside of War Memorial Stadium, the stands here were completely covered in shadows. It was like a double whammy, virtually impossible to get in any quality pics, and for me being a photo enthusiast, this was a letdown. What I actually did to remedy this entirely awkward sun situation was that I returned the following day (Sunday) to the stadium around 10am and since they allow the general public to walk around at their own leisure without any locked gates, I was able to revisit the stands and capture those coveted photos I had come to the Wyoming game for. So...my results turned out to be a success, lol. Some highlights from the game.... - I liked how after the national anthem was sang, two military helicopters did a dramatic flyover War Memorial Stadium. There were also fireworks lighting off into the sky from above the athletic field house. Whenever the Cowboys scored a touchdown, the fireworks blasted off again and again. - Wyoming's band did terrific pregame introductions along with conducting the halftime events as well. - As the game wore on into the evening on the last Saturday of September, it got incredibly cold, especially once the sun went down. And with the wind howling...it felt practically freezing. - I give Wyoming's fans credit. They really showed their spirit throughout the game. Here it was, the Cowboys hadn't won a game yet on the 2024 campaign, and still, no one gave up. Air Force led 13 - 7 at halftime but Wyoming got their act together in the 2nd half and scored three touchdowns to win 31 - 19. Best of all....at the end of the game, fans rushed the field and they allowed anyone to come on down and celebrate. Of course I had to step onto the 50 yard line and touch the famous Cowboy logo. That was memorable. In the end, I know Wyoming isn't a Power 5 conference school and won't play in college football's biggest games, but a fun Mountain West clash against their rival Air Force was definitely worthy of coming to Laramie, WY for the first time. "Welcome to 7220 feet. How's your oxygen?" Beautiful stadium, especially on a nice late summer/ early fall day with blue sky and pine trees lining the stadium. Great for concerts and other events. Food options range from the highly-sought after Chick-fil-a chicken sandwiches and Papa John's pizza. Parking is reasonable along the streets, and if you live close by can hear the stadium noise from your apartment. I'd be more likely to go watch games here if it were named W**re Memorial Stadium, but that's my issue and you don't need to hear about it. First-Hand Experience: Info on my personal visit to this stadium - I've been here twice now, because a bunch of my fans in Cheyenne and Laramie are college age, and so they were happy to introduce me to their local stadium. I even got to go on the inside when it wasn't a game day. It's an excellent facility and has a lot of heart. I really enjoyed walking around it. I've been to every cool stadium in the UK & North America, due to my obsession with travel & sport. I've toured America as a musician for 7 or 8 years. In that time, I've seen sports games at, or visited when empty (and usually both), at almost every major stadium in US and Canada. I have pictures of most which I will upload at some point. Also, on future travels, I plan to take new pix, and add more stadia! Watch this space! ***back to regular review*** It's actually enormous by Wyoming Standards (kind of like me), and I really like it. It's the pride and joy of Laramie, a town where less than five (seriously) people came out to watch me play, probably because everyone was in this 32,500 capacity stadium watching the Wyoming Cowboys play football. Going to a University of Wyoming football game here has been on my bucket list for more than two decades and last night I checked that box. Cold as it may be and just barely past a day stoked with rain, neither were going to deter me from having a good time here. First of all, at 7,215ft above sea level this stadium is the highest in Division I NCAA. Seats can be nose bleed in the first row! The inside of the stadium is well constructed. A huge video board sits at the south endzone and the athletic building caps the north. For a town the size of Laramie this stadium stands fairly large in size. The UW players are led onto the field prior to the game by a cowboy sprinting on a horse with a huge UW flag. It's a nice touch. The UW band also does a great job prior to the game and at halftime. We sat fifth row around the 35yrd line so I didn't have anything to complain about, but all seats even those in the upper corners aren't far from the action. In the underbelly of the stadium you can find plenty of food, drinks and beer. Parking is available in many lots surrounding the stadium and the field house next door hosts a tailgate party that shouldn't be missed. My only regret is that I didn't get to stay long enough for my liking. Cheers! read more

Going to large universities are often like going to another world or another town at least usually from what towns or cities that they are actually in. That is no different with the University of Wyoming. UW is the only large four year university in Wyoming, all the rest of the colleges that the state has are community colleges or vocational schools. Or that College Of America kind of thing whose credentials often get scrutinized. UW never was a place where I wanted to go to school. I simply wanted to get out of Wyoming, not stay there! I visited UW a few times while I was in high school for various projects but none of those things had me come into contact with the War Memorial Stadium. It wasn't until one summer that I finally went there. I could always see the stadium from the road as you drove by, but never actually up to it until that summer. It was Fourth of July festival more or less. The actual name of the event was called Stadium Of Fire. The now late actor Hoyt Axton was there doing stand up comedy more or less which was actually kind of entertaining! There were various other things going on and show put on a very nice fireworks display in the end. I would never be caught dead in a stadium like this for a sports event, but I am glad that I went to Stadium Of Fire. The stadium itself is kind of small but by Wyoming standards it was fairly large. Whatever your pleasure and reasons for going to this stadium, it is not a bad venue at all to go to. read more

UW has made a lot of improvements to the War over the years. The paved lot is beautiful. We tailgate in the main parking lot. I was happy that the Indoor Practice Field was open, so I could have access to real plumbing, but they do close it down during the game. The outhouses are actually not too bad, if you have to use them. The staff inside the stadium is friendly. And the field is in great condition. If you haven't been to the War for a Cowboys game, you need to put it on your list! Go Pokes! read more
