Only visited the Wandin Wine Bar & Diner restaurant bit in the evening, but I liked it a lot.
So much of the Hunter Valley is taken over by fine dining. Often you're forced into two courses, and there's only so much steak or lamb rack you can have sometimes. The Wandin's Diner is a nice change in that it's sharing plates: somewhat larger than tapas, and definitely Mod-Oz in cuisine, but really tasty. Chilli Cornbread w/ Warm Tomato Chutney, BBQ Roast Pork Sliders w/ Apple Slaw, Crispy Fried Whitebait: these are different choices than anywhere else around here, refreshingly so.
It's great that you can customise your meal in small bits (most things come in 2- or 4-person sizes). It's laid-back, relaxed service, and the outdoor seating area is enclosed in heated in winter.
A bottle of their own shiraz went down well, too. read more
