I was in a jam, the person cutting my hair forever was out of town and i needed a cut before a work trip. After searching on line found this local place with great reviews, all mentioning Rebecca. I took a shot and called the shop. Rebecca answered, told me to come right over. Located in a small strip shopping center, the shop looks like it hasnt changed in the past 40 years, fish trophies on the wall, old school country playing in the background and petite asian woman named Rebecca cutting hair. I waited a few minutes while she finshed up a guy with wife and new born in tow. Seemed that Rebecca had known them for a while as she was sweet as could be with the newborn cooing and playing with it. Shortly after, i jumped in the chair and she went to work on my semi-bald head. She was great, telling me how to best tend to my vanishing crop. Took care of my eye brows, cleaned up my ears and neck with a straight blade. Loved that. Look, i don't have a ton of hair but what i do have looks great today and i am very happy that i was lucky enough to find Rebecca. If you don't care about a fancy shop and bougie people, this is a place to try. BTW, she charged $22 if you pay cash. Give her $30 and be thankful. read more

Bill does a great job cutting my hair. I've always been pleased with his consistent and great quality hair cuts. I noticed the review from the gentleman who claimed that the shop discriminates against non whites, but while I can't speak for his specific case, I do know that I, myself, am non white, and I've never felt discriminated against. Moreover, as I was getting my haircut yesterday, the gentleman who was before me in the line was African American, and he seemed very happy with his haircut. In fact, Bill notified me that he came before me, so I could be advised of the wait time. New to the area and needed a haircut. I had been to Willy's in Arlington to get my first haircut in the area, but didn't want to drive that far. Yelp pointed me towards Walter and off I went. This place harkens back to the Barbershops of old. Old, but well maintained furniture and can, jars and bottles of who knows what across the counters. The lady (forgot her name) called me up. I explained to her what I wanted and she looked at me and exclaimed "medium haircut", which I have to admit scared me. But when she was done I had exactly what I asked for, and a perfectly even cut. Bill is an OK guy and what you would expect from a barber. But if you ask for anything outside the norm military style then you might be disappointed. Normal being high and tight or with a fade. Owned by a Marine Corps veteran for over 40 years. Walter unfortunately can't cut hair now due to health reasons, but his wife gives a great haircut at a great price. Yes, the shop is dated, but I like it. It's a throwback classic. Liked my haircut. Yes they still clean up your neck and around tor ears with a straight edge razor and shaving cream. Oh and they're looking to hire barbers, especially for Saturdays. If we have any local vets or military that are qualified and looking to make some money on the weekends let them know. Two surefire ways to eliminate repeat business are: asking your customer if she is having twins when she gives you her due date -and- slapping her son's hand when he wiggles. I gave two stars only because the gentleman who works there is very nice and we were in and out within 20 minutes. Also the prices are decent. The majority of the reviews I've read all gave Walter's Barber Shop a high rating and left tons of positive feedback. I've been living in the area now for a little under two years and have been in search of a barber shop that was similar to the one I grew up with. Well, it looks like I finally found it! The shop really does take you back to a classic period, very rural, old timey (you know what I mean). Every aspect of the shop reminded me of something you'd see in a movie. The place is owned by an older couple who have been in the business for 30+ years. Both were incredibly polite, and just the right amount of chatty. The gentleman is retired military and specializes in military cuts, but is very proficient in every other style of cut (I know, because I asked for something specific). There were some complaints about the barbers being rigid in the way they cut, but I asked Bill to cut my hair in a very specific way and he did it with absolutely no complaints. I was incredibly impressed considering I had been shelling out over $50 for haircuts in Old Town and all you pay is $12 at Walter's. $12 for the perfect cut finished-up with a straight razor, yeah, I'll take that any day... read more

I am new to the area and have achieved three straight bad haircuts while in search of my new barber shop. I found it! I didn't catch the lady's name, but sat down in the first chair and after evaluating how to clean up the mess left behind by the last contestant, she got after it. Even with the existing issues that kept her from achieving 100%, it's still the best I've had in a long time. It was nicely finished with a straight razor. This is your hometown barber. My husband went here one evening and told me of the great service. The next morning I brought our two sons (4yrs) in for a haircut. The barber knew who we were and we never met him. He remembered my husband and knew us by the conversations they had. Patient and exceptional with the kids. A truly a great find. The decor does not matter here because it is a barber shop for darn sakes, but if you are a hard core animal rights person I would advise you to stay away. I tried out Walter's because I read the reviews on Yelp and was looking forward to a nice neat haircut.. First thing is that Bill is a very nice man who is very experienced. The problem is that he gives a lot men high and tight cuts and is not very practiced on doing much else. He gave me mediocre haircut and my hair came out kind of choppy on one side. However, be specific...he assumes all Marines want a "high & tight" when they might just want medium reg. A nice older Korean gal cut our 2-year-old boy's hair. She was quick about it. I'd been here a couple of times, and I was perfectly happy with the haircuts I got. The price was certainly right, that's for sure. The last time I was there, a black soldier came in and asked if this was the only barber in the strip mall. The woman cutting my hair told him that he wanted the barber shop further up the road. That this was a "white's only barber shop." Once he left, she went on, telling me that while she could have cut his hair, she didn't want to because then he'd come back, and bring all his black friends, and that would scare away the white customers. She also provided me with a few more of her racist insights that I won't share here. So while I was happy with the haircut, I was totally unhappy with the conversation. read more

This place is great. The negative reviews are laughable, because of COURSE this is a military place. There are Marine pictures all over the walls. It's not a fancy place. It's what any normal human would think of when they hear of an old-school barber shop. You want fancy hair? They do a great job with military style cuts, and top it off with a warm shaving cream and straight razor trim and finish. Probably the best place in the Alexandria area to get a military style haircut for a good price. The owners (husband and wife) are both very nice people and take pride in their business. I've only had the wife cut my hair, but I'm sure her husband gives a good haircut as well. In more rural areas this type of barber shop is more common, but here in the DC area it's a rare jewel. They take their time with your hair and cut with your satisfaction in mind, and I love the fact they break out the straight razor and they know how to use it. This is a great place to go for a military haircut. The owner is an old crusty military veteran that appears to be a bit gruff. From talking to him, he seems like a good guy. He is very old school. He has been in the Alexandria area when there was nothing but farmland around his barber shop. He seems like a cross between Archie Bunker and R Lee Army (The Drill Sgt from Full Metal Jacket). His wife also works there and they seem to be good people. Again, great haircut and a very good price. My only issue with this place is that it is open during limited hours. I think they are closed during the weekend and close in the early evenings. read more
