However, after seeing the final result, I'm SO glad they did it. What I like most is the covered porch area that extends over the front. I work "at home" on a computer for my job and during COVID this area served me well. Comfortable seating is available and outdoor plugs are available to plug in when needed. I was able to stay out here during moderate thunderstorms and be dry. Inside the History Center, Children's Library, and study rooms have been expanded and updated as well. I'm so thankful this beautiful space is available to me and look forward to using it for years to come.

First, some history: I was born and raised in Three Lakes-- and even went to child care (Story Hour, anyone?!) at this Library. One could say I'm a little biased-- but after a recent visit this summer, I was reminded what a great local resource it is. The Best: 1. Great free wi-fi for locals and visitors alike. They even moved the outside picnic table to the side of the library so that even when its closed, people can sit outside on their laptops and use the signal. 2. Computers for all! I love that you don't have to have a card here to utilize their services. A lot of locals still come to the library to use the computers here instead of taking on the burden of buying their own. 3. Great books! Yes, its a library-- but also a library that spans LOTS of different subjects-- the people running this library are great at getting material that covers controversial, conservative, liberal, political and different lifestyle subject matter. While some people think 'small town, small-town mentality' Three Lakes has always been a town that encourages free thought & speech-- and the library's catalog proves that. 4. The Semi-Annual Book Sale!! again, another opportunity that lets the Library shine! And seriously, THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN! Hardcover books for $1, paper backs for 25¢! So many books and audio books to pick from, there is no way you could walk in and not find something you love that you could just sit on the beach and enjoy. The Worst? I have nothing bad to say... this library is awesome!

We pass through Land O'Lakes every year as we visit nearby Eagle River to the south, but for the…read morefirst time ever, we decided to explore the tiny town. We passed a building that looked like a real fancy log cabin... maybe upscale restaurant...no, wait, it's a library! We came out to see it and saw a sign promoting a nature presentation about native turtles in the state of Wisconsin coming up the following week. Since my 6 year old's favorite animal is the turtle we couldn't miss this. We came back 4 days later for the 10 AM session - held outdoors on the beautifully maintained lawn and garden in front. A person from a wildlife shelter in Minocqua presented the 45-minute lesson, targeted at school-aged kids, who gathered round on carpet squares on the lawn in front of the library. It was a wonderful and informative lesson about turtles and a beautiful day for it. I walked away thoroughly impressed with the library, right down to a stray frog that hopped across their lawn during the presentation, only to be chased and picked up by a librarian who took it to a better spot. The presentation was immediately followed by yet another speaker who taled about invasive species in Wisconsin. We didn't stick around for it, but I was impressed with the number of programs the library had posted on its bulletin board. The library is clearly a community hub in a small town like this. And even when they are closed, there's a water fountain and public bathroom accessible from the side of the building. So if you're traveling up north and your kids miss seeing their local library, check this one out. It's a truly nice place.

There are 5 computers here, I believe, but only one spot for a laptop to stay plugged in. This is unfortunate for those who are like me who come to a library to do work on their computer. Otherwise the library setting is nice, it is quiet any time I've been here. The classes/children's area are held downstairs so the noise doesn't carry upstairs, at least that I've ever heard. I wish they took card for payments but unfortunately they don't. The library director should consider changing this if possible. It is inconvenient to have to go to an ATM and then split up dollar bills for change (for prints and such).

The ice is harvested from a nearby frozen lake, the blocks are transported downtown to be erected into the cool castle. Multicolor lights & a few well placed Christmas trees add to the ambiance. It's a pretty cozy library that reminds me of the old Chicago branch libraries. Right as you come in, there's the kids section with an abundant selection of books. There's also a well-worn truck/train table and a separate, carpeted story room and play area with some plush animals and dollhouses. The kids also have a decent selection of jigsaw puzzles and games to choose from. They too are well-worn in many cases. I also saw some nice books for older kids, written by local authors, featuring history of the copper mining in the 1800s and living in the frontier days on the Upper Peninsula. We enjoyed going there, even though we're not locals or members. It could use a bit of a refreshing look, but the library does have plenty of computers and audio books in adjoining rooms. One comment I have to make: where are all the kids from Iron River? In our 4 visits, seemed there was only one time where my kids got to meet someone from town. I can tell you in Park Ridge or around Chicago, the library would've been packed on a weekday afternoon. Makes me wonder about whether parents take their kids to the library often out here in the UP, or do they prefer ORV riding on dirt roads and fishing all summer long...
