Wish I had gone at night or during an event. Their insta is very up to date on events so I would check that! I enjoyed a couple glasses of wine and soaked up a moderately cloudy but very warm day. I think they give you a token for your glassware to make sure you bring it back and don't break it. I thought maybe it was an extra euro pf something (like a deposit) but I don't think I got it back - so not really sure how that system works! So anyways your first drink might be one euro more for the glass deposit. They have tents set up to order different food or drink. There's also a pool they open up for some events!

A really interesting new cocktail bar in Strasbourg, that is definitely worth a detour…read more We went there with a friend of mine and were welcomed immediately, with a staff finding us a cozy and a comfy spot. The lights were not too bright, not too dim, and the music along with the decoration were rather quite tasteful. I fancy myself a cocktail connoisseur (if not snob), so I decided to go with classical cocktails that I know well - a Brooklyn and a Mai Tai. Both are classics, but are tricky to get right and really exhibit the quality of ingredients well. I was pleasantly surprised that the waiter immediately recognized the Brooklyn and offered me a couple of options for the main spirit. The only complaint that the only rye they were offering was Bulleit (meh for the dill off-flavor), and for bourbons it was Buffalo Trace (a great whiskey, but somewhat devoid of personality). Given that they had Woodford and Rittenhouse on the whiskey menu, I would not minded them to offer me to pay a bit more to get a more premium spirit. After all, at 14 euros for the drink, it's not an unreasonable price for well-made craft cocktails. Similarly, there is somewhat a split in bartending community due to Picon availability and transition to amer-biere instead of bitters as to complement or event substitute it with Angostura bitters, which would have been a good question to ask. Other than that, The Brooklyn was good, served in a Nick-and-Nora and a true Maraschino cherry. Not the absolute best I've ever seen, but a solid 8/10 and for 14 euros in such a nice setting - totally not a bad deal! For a classic MaiTai, the trick is double. First is the choice of the right rums blend, and the second is the balancing between orgeat and lime, to make sure that the cocktail is neither too sweet, nor too sour. In case of Le Douanier, the balancing was somewhat off in both departments. While they used very decent rums (Plantation 3* and a different Plantation), they did not use a Jamaican rum, leaving on the table rich funk notes and nuttiness that would make an outstanding Mai Tai. Similarly, since they used the house-made orgeat that tend to be less sweet than the 1940s-1960s commercial stuff for which the original recipe was formulated, the initial drink was a tiny tad too acidic. However, with the ice melting and dilution that followed, the acid has mellowed for a very decent drink towards the end. Once again, not the absolute best I've ever seen, but a very decent version of a very tricky drink, especially for a non-Tiki establishment. And for 13 -+ was a very correct price! My friend grabbed a sweet banana liquor-forwards drink from menu, which came in a bowl and was richly decorated. While a bit too sweet for me, it was exactly to her taste, especially as the ice melted a bit. Overall, a very good first impression and a staff passionate about the cocktails, likely building up their liquors collection and hopefully still to experiment. It does not dethrone Code Bar as the best cocktail bar in Strasbourg, but it shows promise and is definitely worth a visit, especially if what you want is comfy social drinking.

That said, the food itself was very good for being a Pan-Asian restaurant smack-dab in the middle of Germany. The larger main courses were more in the varietal Teishoku style, and their sushi rolls were as good as any you'd eat in the San Francisco Bay Area (which is to say ... pretty good!). The one thing that put a bit of a damper on the dinner for me was that I'd ordered a half-liter of beer, and asked once again if it was coming out as it had been a while. Well, two different servers returned with a half-liter each, so I had to gulp down a liter of beer in front of my friend's family which probably didn't look so good. :-P Other than that, Vinami was very good. I was a few days into my wedding trip to Karlsruhe when my withdrawals for IPAs started to kick in…read more Don't get me wrong, the Pilsners and Wheat beers of Deutschland were solid but they just didn't pack that flavor punch that I was accustomed to as found in the craft brews of the U.S. of A. In an effort to satisfy my craving for an IPA, my friend (the brother of the bride) and I hopped on the terrific Karlsruhe street trolley and headed to a craft beer bar near the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. After a walk around the block, we finally found the bar but it was closed. As if sent by God himself, our disappointed faces turned hopeful as we saw the sign for Carroll's just down the block. Could an Irish pub offer the IPA satisfaction that I so desperately desired? One look at a chalkboard near the bar and my prayers were answered: "Brooklyn Brewery East IPA, €4.50." I went to college on the East Coast, so I was stoked to see an offering by the well-respected Brooklyn Brewery that I had come to love. To find one of their quality brews all the way in Germany made things even sweeter. Amazingly, I had never enjoyed their East IPA before and as I poured it into a pint glass I was quite eager. When the hoppy liquid goodness hit my tastebuds, I was instantly back in my happy place. Yes, it was strange being in an Irish pub in Germany drinking an American craft beer. At the same time though it was just what I needed. The homeyness of Carroll's provided the perfect environment for such a random moment in my life and for that I will always be thankful. In addition, I was honoring my German and Irish ancestors at the same time in this Karlsruhe establishment, an historical 2-for-1.
