A couple of months ago I adopted a dog from them. They have the nicest and caring staff, very smart staff.

They didn't even bother shoveling, salting, or sanding any of the walkways or drive leaving the whole place hazardous to walk, especially when your hands are full of boxes of bones. Apparently they've had multiple people slip and fall even just this past week but the management doesn't want to spend the time or money to make it safer for employees or guest. Very unprofessional management while the staff was at least pleasant and grateful for the gifts, never received any thanks from management.

They'd rather make 1 person do 4 people's job 6 days a week than just be nice to the staff. Despite being ran off donations and telling employees they can only afford 11.25, they somehow take home salary pay but only work 3 days a week and never take phone calls while at home. They won't sand or salt their parking lot or backyard where the dogs play and expect the employees to just figure it out while slipping and falling constantly. All while berating them for dog hair on the floor or other minor non issues. The women that run this shelter would rather have no staff and the animals suffer than ever lift a finger or come in on a day off.

Quinn a beautiful Australian Kelpie, the sweet puppy was sent up north from Houston on May 4th…read more This pup traveled many hours and needed to decompress. He was and energetic teething puppy, but as you can see in the photos playful with other dogs and very loveable. Courtney Goettel a pregnant intake worker did not allow this dog to clear his head, he was crying and very scared. She mishandled this dog, he scratched her, his puppy teeth and nails were sharp, I too had a scratch when he was playing. This pup was in the care of BARC in Houston, adopted as a pup, the adoptive owner did not take it back to the shelter, she left it in front of a popular shopping center where I picked him up on the same day. He was a wonderful dog. Myself and rescuers here in Houston wanted to give him the best chance for adoption so we made sure he quickly got north to the Humane Society Of the Lakes. He was sent with a new harness, chew toys and was loved by all that met him. Courtney had him put down on May 7th. The little guy never had a chance. He scratched her and she wanted him tested for rabies. First question, why was a pregnant woman handling animal intake? I was scratched and never once was worried about rabies. He had his vaccination. She had him put down for her own personal reasons. Once killed and tested, surprise he did not have rabies. We in Houston were never given the opportunity to pick this dog up. The Shelter Manager said, he is gone, just get over it and move on. Is this really a NO KILL Shelter. Unprofessional, super insensitive, and marches to their own beat. The decision to send him to your shelter haunts me every day--it should you too!
