The soup was a bouillon called "Grießklößchensuppe". The menu offered three options; I chose the semolina dumplings. Outstanding! The soup was delicately tasteful and did not overwhelm the palate. The main course was "Zweibelrostbraten": a grilled and roasted filet covered with onions and roasted potatoes on the side. Cooked medium rare, it was lean, tender and delicious. We chose an American wine from California: Stimson Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (€23). Very impressive clean taste, exceptionally smooth with lots of fruit right up front. We did not have dessert as we felt very full from our sumptuous repast. Reservations are essential. Our meal, with wine and tax was €126 (for three) and well worth it! We WILL return. This is an off season and many places are closed, or they close early. We woke Ines Kaneke up accidentally trying to see if they were still open. She greeted us with a huge smile and was happy to let us stay with them. We were welcomed in the morning by a fabulous German breakfast that she had prepared. We met her husband Gunnar Rosenhauer who told us they were new owners of this guest house. It is located inside the wall, and perfect walking distance from everything. We fully intend on visiting them again as soon as we can!

If not you will have travel adventures but not the ones you planned. That said, thank you Steve Jobs for the iPhone's ability to right many wrongs. We bypassed the interesting town to travel down in the valley to the Pension Fuchsmuhle and inn keeper Alex - a wonderfully gentile person. The pictures at their website say it all - it is that beautiful. As it happens the website is in German... Not to worry. Alex speaks excellent English and showed us to our room with ensuite bath. Then he announced it was a short 15 walk to town. We drove and spent 6 hours wandering this interesting, walled, medieval town. Did I mention the town was uphill from the B&B? The Germans make fabulous breakfasts and Pension Fuchmuhle was the first of many but one of the best. The bed was typical of all we experienced - two singles pushed together with delightful bedding and well appointed bath. This was Herr Husband's favorite B&B.

When I arrived at Gausthaus Edith located in the heart of charming Rothenberg I thought I had found…read morethe best value in all of Europe. I made a direct reservation for just 68 euro for a room that was bright, clean, and offered both a private bathroom and windows looking out at the town. (By contrast I had a room in Haarlem with windows looking at a brick wall). Unfortunately Edith made two missteps for which I deducted a star each. First, the mattress is just terrible. This could be solved easily. Second, involved breakfast. I read online breakfast was offered for 8 Euro in the restaurant run by her son. This sounded like a fair deal so I agreed to it at check in. The next morning I went downstairs and found a small spead typical of German lodgings along with an offer from Edith to cook eggs. While breakfast was served in her son's restaurant it certainly wasn't a restaurant breakfast Spending 8 euro here was a mistake and I wish I had gone down the block to Brot & Zeit instead. If the room had been just a bit more per night and breakfast included I would not have minded and it is still likely I would have booked this place.
