On the top floor you will find DVDs, games and CDs. The till here is usually quiet and the shop generally empty. Downstairs it is a whole different story. On the ground floor you will find stationery, office supplies and their vast selection of books. There is two sets of tills downstairs and the ones at the front of the store are exceptionally busy, often queueing into the book aisles. The staff are friendly and helpful but the store is somewhat disorganised, for instance they have shelves of books behind the smaller till, hard for a customer to reach. Their book prices are reasonable but I think a lot of their stationery and office supplies are expensive.

The staff are lovely and friendly and will help you find whatever you are looking for.The store is vast and very clean and tidy, it does get a bit jumbled after people have read through stuff and just put them back anyway but usually it is tidy and well stocked. Yorkshire Book Clearance Outlet is a great shop for cheap books, which I love as I'm a big reader…read moreand am always keen to buy bargain books. It's a sweet little shop absolutely crammed with cheap books, aka three for a fiver. My only complaint is that they're not in much of an order (such as alphabetical) so you have to have time and patience to weed through them until you find what you want.

Nothing could be more worth the spend than a really great book to get your grey cells going, be it non-fiction, biography or fiction, any good book can last a lifetime and be re-read more than enough times to make it worth buying in the first place! Just Books is great for just that, being as they sell exactly what they say, just books. There are hundreds to choose from at really good prices, although similar to a charity shop, you need to dig for your treasure. It's by no means a Waterstones or an Ottakers in here, so I wouldn't go looking for anything too specialist, but certainly for an impulse treat it's a great start. They do plenty of deals too so you won't be short on reading material after a little visit here! Expand your minds with some lovely reading - go and have a browse!

In many cases the Oxfam shops sell second hand clothing at ridiculous prices under the guise of vintage, and I've even seen Primark clothing on sale there for a little more than it sells brand new! But Oxfam books is a shade different. Here there are literally hundreds of different books on sale. As with the standard Oxfam shops, some of these are a little overpriced, but with so much variety it's hard not to find a bargain in here. There are lots of popular texts, but also some really quirky old books, which have that lovely antique vibe. I wanted to find some specialist literature based around gender studies and feminist non-fiction and found a far better range and highlighted section than even Borders - which had merged those texts in with lesbian erotica! Oh the irony! Every item that I chose to purchase was super cheap and it was pleasing to know that some of my money, however much, should go to a good cause. It's the kind of place you could spend forever in, browsing, reading, then curling up in a corner engrossed! It has a lovely, library-like feel to it with many other people flicking through pages and browsing the shelves. For the most part the books are very good value for money and the huge selection means you are absolutely guaranteed to find something you want to take away. They also sell a tasteful range of greetings cards. The staff seem lovely and you get the impression they really enjoy their job. Next time I have some pennies to rub together I'm definitely heading over there to stock up on books in preparation for springtime reading under a tree in my local park! Can't wait!

They also stock a little bit of everything so you could do the full family shop there if you so wished.

Lidgett hill stationers is situated within a small row of shops just approaching the main shopping…read morearea of Pudsey. Being only a small town I am sure that many make use of this handy stationers. It's always nicer to go indie than big chain, and there is a Cartridge World about 10 minutes or so away, but I would choose Lidgett Hill every time. Why? The extra mile an indie store will always go to for their customers, there's always the personal touch! It's got all the usual things that you would hope for in a stationers, hoards of pens and such, papers of all varieties, folders and office supplies - no stone unturned they've pretty much covered everything. However, as you'll notice by their notices, they do offer more than the things you might expect as well! Given our recent bout of snow, which did seem relentless, they have compiled a special collection of 'snow day activities' for the children stuck at home during the impossible snow days! I realise that it's a bit of cheeky marketing, but it was pretty cute and innovative! Essentially, these kits were made up of colouring books, crayons, puzzles and so on. Still, better than the idiot box, right? All in all, it's a ok with me!

Having visited many craft shops, I have to say, I wasn't sure what to make of Lidget Hill…read moreStationers. I think I've mentioned before what a fan on stationary I am. This place was a bit of a mixed bag. There are 2 aisles to the shop, (the divider dedicated to dated greetings cards), On the left, there is everything you'd expect from a stationers: pens, pencils, pads of paper, folders and display folders, pencil cases selotape etc. On the right of the counter , tucked in the corner is acryllics, sketch pads and paintbrushes. I have to be honest, and say that I thought their arts materials were pretty overpriced. The quality of the paint was a mid-range brand, but I felt they were asking for much more than it is worth, and indeed is priced in competing city centre shops and also student unions. They do have an interesting supply of goods though. They sell many different childrens colouring books, party bags, stamps, stickers of all sorts, and card making kits, but I did get a niggling feeling that perhaps the local community was not making the most of its stationers, but instead, opting for cheaper well-known establishments.

Martin's is a little corner shop/newsagents type shop in Haxby. It's a nice friendly little shop…read moreselling things like magazines, confectionary and drinks. There is a Co-op round the corner which probably takes a lot of custom from this shop but I prefer Martin's. The only things is they obviously don't sell as much or as big a range of things.
