Books For All

If you have a spare hour (or more) there are plenty of worse places to spend it than here. Don't be…read morefooled by the small room in the entrance downstairs (although you can find some decent books down here) as upstairs the place stretches much further than you'd expect. There's a massive selection of 2nd hand books available as well as a decent music section that contains lots of nice vinyl. Horror, romance, kids, cookery, history etc. - if you are after a cheap and out of print book you might well find it here. Lots of fun!

I did find the store to be very cluttered, it was just full of empty and half-empty boxes, which hadn't been put away with no staff member nearby, it felt more like an obstacle course, to get into the store and towards the back of the ground floor. The staff seemed friendly enough, the store layout is easy to follow with the store guide, They didn't have the handwritten descriptions and notes to accompany the books which other Waterstones stores have, this is a shame as this is one of the things I like about Waterstones and find it adds a more personal touch. Prices are higher than Amazon and co but again tend to be common with most bookshops. Advertising for events inside the store remains in place, which will be worth a look if you're interested. 3* - Decent selection of books, yet the store could be kept a lot tidier.
My older sister worked here for a time while she was at uni (to become a librarian no less!)…read more The staff in here are all educated literary types, and they're usually pretty good with the book recommendations. The shelves are always very organized, and although the shop is small, it's got a lot of variety. A good bet if you're looking for the latest bestseller or something a bit more obscure.
The Works

The Harrogate Works is laid out over 3 floors, the ground floor on which you enter, and downstairs and an upstairs. The downstairs stocks various art supplies, stationary and art related books (with the odd computer program thrown in!). There are some great bargains to be found here, the canvases particularly are great value, and some of the branded stationary is much cheaper then elsewhere. The main floor stocks the most popular books, seasonal products and a whole other random selection of things! There are some good discounts to be found on books, particularly biography type books- you won't generally find the current bestsellers in here. The upstairs is all books, and has a wide selection of different categories and genres. The shop is well laid out and easy to find your way round, and the staff are friendly and helpful. So all in all, worth a look, but don't always go in looking for something specific- it may not be there however you may be surprised by everything you do find there!

The customer service here always has been and still is APPALLING. The old ladies working behind the counter are absolutely evil and unhelpful (if they choose to help you or even acknowledge you at all). I hated spending money here as the service was so shit, but they have the best selection of stationary supplies in Harrogate.

There are…read morejust under 100 HMV stores left in England, and I keep forgetting they actually exist, so I was a little shocked when I stumbled across their location here, when in the mall. This store was marked for closure in 2019, but was saved and remains open until this day, I'm sure the local town are happy as it is a nice brand to have in the town and avoids another empty unit in Victoria Shopping Centre. The store is a decent size, it has a nice selection of DVDs and albums, and a couple of other accessories such as speakers and headphones and a few miscellaneous items, that seem to be random without fitting into any specific theme. Lack of staff around the store, the atmosphere did feel a little run down and dead. While the store might have survived, the atmosphere... less so. Prices seem higher than Amazon and other online retailers. 3*
This HMV has been a great addition to Harrogate Town Centre, as it really does have some great…read moreprices on DVD's and CD's. The store is very well stocked, and even has some more obscure DVD's (again at very reasonable prices.) The store also stocks some basic games and accessorys (I think?) and has a small book section comprising mainly of celebrity biographys/autobiographys or books written by celebrities (they may sound awful but I'm including books by Tim Burton and Stephen Fry here!) The t-shirts decorating the wall around the shop not only look great, but are (again!) really well priced at 2 for £20 (?), which really is great value for film/tv branded products. The only shame is that it does always seem to be busy, and you do find yourself having to constantly push past people to get where you want. Still, don't let that put you off, great variety, great prices..what's not to love?!?
