This spot is truly a hidden gem. We were going to a holiday party in Winthrop and wanted to grab a drink on the way. Full disclosure: we didn't have a full meal here, but the experience was flawless nonetheless. We sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the sarcastic, charming lead bartender. His cocktails were well balanced and he made all of his mixers from scratch. His drinks were inventive with ingredients like burrata foam, hazelnut foam and homemade eggnog. I wanted to order every single cocktail on the menu and plan to return to do so. We couldn't resist ordering a food item and went with the burrata/tomato/jam appetizer. It was excellent. I love a warm tomato. You guys, you have to try this restaurant. It's the real deal. read more

I went with a couple buddies after work and we sat at the bar. The place is gorgeous, dotted with pictures of vintage Winthrop and photos of the family that is running the spot going back generations. Not too bright, not too dark, good classic music playing. The bartender clearly cared about his craft - I got an old fashioned with my dinner and a creamy espresso martini that he garnished with some lemon zest. Never had one like that before, I loved it. We decided we were going to split some appetizers, so after the bartender brought over some bread and oil (with a little kick to it) we got the lobster arancini, polenta fries (the garlic aioli was unbelievable), buratta, and some Caesar salads. I meant to take a few more photos but everything looked so good we tore into it before I could remember. For dinner, I had the braised brisket ragu. Any time I see something slow cooked on a menu I have to try it. The bartender came by to shred some cheese on top before I dug in. It did not disappoint, and the ziti was homemade to top it off! Went last night with a couple of friends. Where do I begin? The service was top notch, the drinks were delicious, and the food was phenomenal. I got the cioppino. It was filled to the brim with all my favorites. Little necks, mussels, shrimp, calamari, scallops, and white fish. The broth was so good I could have made a meal with just that and bread. The other meals at the table were veal francese and chicken marsala. Both got rave reviews. We had bruschetta, arugula salad and JoJo's croquettes for appetizers. To end the meal we had a warm chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla Gelato. We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal and will definitely be returning. read more

One word: FANTASTICO. I took my father here tonight for his 92nd and from the moment we arrived until we left the staff could not have been any nicer or accommodating. Lisa, our waitress, was very engaging and made sure we were well taken care of. The ambiance of the place was cozy and inviting and IMMACULATE. The food was amazing. The portions were huge; they did not skimp. From the fried calamari, to the meatballs, to the lobster ravioli, to the salmon and cioppino everything was delicious. My mother had the Calabrian wings and the owner was concerned because they were spicy....not a problem, she was licking her fingers. For dessert we had the cannoli and were not disappointed. I wanted to check out a new local spot to celebrate my birthday. My girlfriend and I decided on Vuolo's. Family owned and operated, from the moment we walked in we felt right at home. The design is sleek and sharp with black and white photos of local families (and the Vuolo family!) decorating the walls. We were welcomed by Lisa and James as if we were part of the family. Joe on the bar is serving top notch specialty cocktails and clearly has an extensive knowledge of mixology. Our server Cameron was a delight. Very attentive, happy to provide recommendations, friendly, and a great sense of humor. Now-the food! We started with the Malanzana Torre, Lobster Arrancini, and Polenta Fries. Honestly, all of the app options sounded fantastic but we decided and these and they did NOT disappoint. The eggplant is crispy and light, layered with the most delicious airy ricotta and savory/slightly sweet plum tomato sauce. The polenta fries were unbelievable, also crispy and light, not at all heavy, as polenta can often be. Served with a truffle aioli that was to die for. The lobster arrancini was the star of this course. Noticeably fresh lobster meat in an impressive ratio to the rice, encasing a huge ball of fresh mozzarella. Drenched in a sherry lobster sauce I will be dreaming about. For our next course we had the arugula salad and the fig and arugula flatbread. Both excellent. The flatbread was sweet and crispy balanced with the savory/salty pancetta. Our main course was the weekly special pumpkin ravioli, and the scallops and fusilli. The ravioli was out of this world. Topped with house made candied bourbon walnuts I would eat on their own. Pasta was cooked to perfection (and made in house daily!) For desert we had the homemade chocolate chip cookie and gelato. It may have been the best chocolate chip cookie I have tasted. The chef, Stephen, came out to greet us and wish a happy birthday. He was extremely warm and kind, and so young! Very impressive. I never write reviews but I had to for Vuolo's. I hope this restaurant gets all the accolades and support it deserves. It is a welcome gem to the community. read more

Delicious food, and excellent service! I have been twice and both times our server Lisa provided us with great service! She is nice, patient and fast with drinks!! The restaurant provides bread for the table with oil, which really is so good! The first time I went I had Chicken Francese, it was cooked to perfection! I almost got it on my second visit but instead opted for the filet mignon special which was not only AMAZING but a great value ($39 for 8 ounces and two sides!) the portions have been large and I have had leftovers each time. I've only been to Vuolo's a couple of times recently but can't wait to go back. Appetizers were great (especially the mussels) and for entrees the pork chop and pretty much anything seafood were excellent. Oh and my friend said the Chicken Parm was perfectly done. For the month of December they did a feast of seven fishes so there were specials of fish delivered every day. We had the swordfish chop and it was absolutely fantastic. We got a Christmas gift card and have been waiting to make reservations. We made reservations on Saturday night for 2 people at 7PM and got bar seats. A ridiculously overpriced, overrated sham of a restaurant whose idea of red sauce consists of tasteless candied tomato pitifully sautéed with some garlic and slathered over everything. No variation. Their Fra Diavolo with fried seafood was unpleasantly greasy and lacked depth. The pizza was a hardboard mess. The steak was cooked limp and boiled without salt or a hint of flavor despite swimming in butter, and undercooked other than "correct internal temperature " and tepid burn marks. Do they even know how to use a grill!!???. Then, the level of clueless service and inappropriate answering back by the main waitress just took me aback and amused me. The Waitress had no table manner whatsoever, no knowledge of the menu or wines, she immediately messed up the wine order, proceeded to blame me instead of apologizing. Then she forgot we existed for a while. No check in whether we needed fresh drinks. No check in whether said drinks arrived, twice in a row. No keeping track of my glass of wine levels. So we suffered thirst repeatedly. I felt neglected as she yammered and yapped with the other tables. Then, to add insult to insult, the clearly incompetent kitchen undercooked my flavor lacking steak twice, chef came out and defended it as being a good steak like I'm a peasant who's never cooked steak before. In the end every dish was mediocre: tepid oily and salty fra diavolo, a charc board for $19 dollars that consisted of two slices of mozz two pieces of cheap provolone, a slice of salami, a piece of prosciutto, some jam, 8 olives, a dollop of canned red pepper. Terrible pasta dish. Frozen pizza. Sugary sauce. Just no. Lol. I could have had a better charcuterie board raiding the fridge at the local 7-11 and better service at Burger King. . I have no clue how this place gets good reviews unless all the locals are in on it. *edit: here comes the owner et al in defense. He is right. Clearly this isn't the restaurant for me. I don't lie and was rude only after the food and service situation became untenable. Good luck. I'm proud to not have left a tip for that amateur, and that my assertiveness got the crappy food returned. Anyone who enjoys this poser food go ahead eat to your hearts delight. First time here. Our friends heard of this restaurant so we made reservations and went last night. The hostess was wonderful and made us feel right at home. We started with Caesar salads. We ordered 2 for 4 people which was plenty and delicious. The bread was fresh and came with oil and seasoning along with a big clove of garlic. The men had cioppino , we had veal and chicken marsala. Honestly the best we have all had. The food was fresh, plentiful seasoning/sauce delicious. The wait staff were attentive and accommodating! What a wonderful night and experience! Hey Vuolo's where have you been all my life? Mimi's meatballs my oh my!! I couldn't sop up the sauce fast enough with the extra bread. Lobster arancini ....yum yum!! We were also delightfully pleased with the pork chop, fra diavolo shrimp/pappardelle, scallops/fusilli, and the gnocchetti. The next time I order the shrimp fra diavolo, I will ask for extra sauce. The main entrees like the appetizers were heaven on a plate!! The wine pours were great unlike other restaurants that only give you 1/4 of a glass. I couldn't even finish my wine!! The only setback was the wait time for the meals but completely understandable given it was a Saturday night and customers were beating down the door to get in and who could blame them? The food is very good. Real Italian family producing real Italian dishes. Very efficient and friendly staff who are super happy to see the guests in a very laid back neighborhood atmosphere. The appetizer Malanzana Torre (eggplant appetizer) was scrumptious. The chicken marsala was the best I have had anywhere, and the addition of some bacon chips was a perfect addition. The Lobster Arancini was tasty but, unfortunately there was very little lobster, (no surprise these days, however!) The fig and arugula Pizzette (flat bread) were ample and beautifully presented and delicious. The pair of bartenders, Chris and Joe really are far above average, full of vigor and attentive to a fairly good size bar. They are a delight! The only real drawback was the room had very high ceilings and though beautifully restored and designed, with a full dining complement of guests had above average noise levels. Perhaps they can work on that. I will be going back to enjoy more of this very welcome family owned business to Winthrop! read more

Tried this new restaurant in Winthrop heard great things and they didn't disappoint. Went on a Tuesday night sat at the bar and the whole place was hopping, loved the vibe. Everyone was enjoying their dinner and having a great time. Joseph and Chris were our bartenders and they suggested the cocktail of the night so we said sure and was not disappointed. I tried their special; pumpkin ravioli the combination of the maple cream sauce with the spinach and topped with bourbon glazed walnuts brought it to the next level. We had appetizers as well stuffed roasted peppers and lobster arancini both delish as well. This is one of my new favorite places . read more

Their staff are warm and welcoming and full of personality. We had a couple of well made cocktails - a pear martini for me. Followed by a Caesar salad that had huge shavings of parmigiana . My husband had the linguine vongole. Perfect size and delicious. I had the pork chop with polenta. Delicious! They have a very nice wine list and most you can have by the glass. My first visit with my aunt and cousins this past Tues. evening, so it was not very crowded or loud. The decor is of the nice stripped down/stream lined type, with nods to Winthrop's past history like the Narrow Gauge railroad painted on an exposed brick wall (this is former MuffinTown factory). Waitress was very nice and patient -- we were gabbing she came back a couple of times. Menu is nice curated selection of Italian specialties. They also have a liquor license, everyone got wine but me. We had a brushchetta appetizer which was great, the bread also on the table with the olive oil was crusty and delicious. My aunt and I plus one cousin all ordered the Chicken Francese or Francesca, et al., -- it was delicious and came with hand made pasta. They served it with lemon/sauce over the chicken, so good. My younger cousin had the salmon, also quite a large piece and it was over a bean puree. She said the salmon was quite good. My aunt and one cousin had creme brûlée for dessert, which they loved, my cousin and I shared the salted brownie with gelato, an awesome treat. The prices are generally I think comparable to other restaurants in town, entrees even pasta only without meat, start at around $20 and up, I think this is about standard with the cost of food prices/transportation, et al. It was a lovely night, I hope they do well and remain part of Winthrop's restaurant scene. To note, they are on the corner of Walden and Lincoln, Walden is a Main Street, there is some parking but note, the bus line now runs down Walden, so you can take the 713 here and the bus stop is less than a half block away/by the Pillar House Apts/near the basketball courts. You can also take the 712 to Main and Walden and walk down from that corner, again about a block. You can park on Lincoln street as well, near the park, but the part of Lincoln St. that goes up the hill is one way, so that is out. read more

Incredible food. Got the arugula salad load with fresh parmigiana and pistachio. The calamari was incredible serving both a shrimp cocktail sauce and a comeback sauce. Then got the chicken Marsala with homemade fusilli pasta . The Marsala sauce was some of the best I ever tried. Portion are huge and bill is extremely reasonable. You can get the same meal In the north end and pay double with much smaller portions. The service was incredible , as the staff was extremely attentive .
