There are two Indian restaurants in Louth, and in my opinion this one is the nicest! Ludensians…read morewill argue hotly for their favourite, though, so it's probably a matter of personal preference rather than any genuine superiority! The Raj Mohal is always busy, even on a week night, and they have various deals on offer in the week which make curry a really good value meal - such as a 3-course meal for two for £18. These deals aren't on offer at the weekend, but it's even busier then. It's a traditionally styled Indian restaurant, with velvet banquettes and candles on the tables and a dark, intimate atmosphere. Perfect for dates, in fact, as the tables are so nice and private! There's a good range of traditional India starters, main courses and side dishes, and the food tastes freshly cooked when it arrives. Service is quick and friendly, and of course you get hot lemon-scented flannels and After Eight mints at the end of your meal - what kind of a curry would it be without those?! There's also a good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on offer despite a very small bar, and prices for those are reasonable too.

I have to agree with the other review of this restaurant. I have used both Indian restaurants in…read moreLouth extensively and as Indian food is my preferred restaurant experience I have tried many all over the country. This one ranks up there with the best. The prices are very competitive and the range on the menu includes all the typical Indian fare with a few specialities thrown in for good measure. The service is pretty fast and the staff are friendly, yet even though it's always quite busy they never try to rush you out. The setting is very much like one I visited in Norwich, with seating being in cubicles and quite dark so it is really intimate and even when busy the level of noise is quite subdued by the way it's laid out. Again for romance this is lovely, glittering candle flames in your lovers eyes is the best way to eat. I would definately recommend this restaurant if you like indian food and even more so if you want a romantic meal, with a bit of spice!

However, there is a large car park only a few minutes walk away. The restaurant is a mix of modern and traditional. Exceptional value - normally 1/2 price during the week. There are discounts for takeaways if you collect. If you like something spicy go for chicken tikka chilli garlic (not on the menu but they happily do it). Lovely garlic nan bread also, and sag bhaji. I have eaten in Indian restaurants throughout the UK and this is still my favourite. Highly recommended.

The food was still ok no horror story's but not as good as before, all 3 of our curries tasted pretty much the same and we're lacking any kind of x factor. Same with the service ok but nothing special. Overall pretty disappointing experience considering it's former glory. I'm sure it's been taken over as now the menu strangely offers dishes not just from India but also china and Malaysia among other places, some may embrace this but I go to an Indian restaurant for specialist Indian cuisine not a jack of all trades menu. Still worth a visit but no longer the best!

Its a bit further down the main road but worth the walk. The owner was so gracious he recommended a few dishes and even prepared one for us we hadn't ordered which was our fav..chilli chicken. The special Naan was so good it was almost like eating dessert. Wasn't too crowded just a steady stream of people and lots of take out pick ups. Will see come back when we are in Leicester again.

Do not under any account go to this restaurant if you like a curry after 12 pints of lager. Don't…read morego if your idea of Indian food is eye wateringly hot chicken phal, nor if you like blood red Tikka Massala. This is, to its loyal and discerning followers, by a considerable distance the best Indian food that you will find in Leicester. Family run, by a gujarati family displaced from Kenya more than 30 years ago, it conforms to the highest standards. I have been going there for 15 years and can say, with total honesty, that I have never had a bad meal. With the wonderfully courteous Dinesh looking after the 40 cover restaurant, which has been recently fully refurbished, and brother Ashok masterminding the cooking, a visit is more akin to a visit to an exclusive dining club than your regular curry house. Meat, fish and vegetarian options are imaginatively and stylishly prepared and served, and Ashok will happily cook to order if your particular favourite is not on the extensive menu. This place does not get awards, or feature in guides because it doesn't need to. The do not need to solicit cheap publicity. Beloved by Leicester's Indian and English communities alike, it is a good idea to book because it can be packed - and not always only on Friday and Saturday. I cannot recommend highly enough, because if you want a truly high quality meal (not the cheapest, but that should not be an issue) then this is the one. With starters, sweets and a few beers, it can run to thirty or forty pounds a head. But it is money well spent.
