Voergaard Castle is one of Denmark 's most beautiful renaissance buildings dating back to 1589. It was renovated and furnished exclusively by its last owner, Count Oberbech-Clausen. It can also be argued that this private foundation "museum" is also a fascinating and extravagant monument to this guy's ego.
Voergaard Castle houses Denmark 's largest privately-owned collection of art treasures and antiques, including works by Goya, Rubens and Raphael, as well as Napoleon I´s dinner service and valuable Ming vases. I certainly wasn't expecting this in the middle of Denmark!
Although I wouldn't have visited this place on my own (we were on a cruise-based cruise excursion), it was a pretty amazing experience. Our tour (about an hour) and guide were fabulous and really made this place come alive. read more
