Like all beautiful view points (Cristo, Pao de açúcar, dois irmãos) of the city, the hike makes the view that much more rewarding. The hike to the top of Vista Chinesa is actually not too rigorous and the trail is really well marked. We had to do some research to find out the details, but the trail starts at Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade and it pretty well marked all the way up. (Follow the signs for trilha all the way up and then turn at the sign that says Vista Chinesa to the right and it comes out to the paved road. It'll be on the left up the hill) It was deep in the Tijuca Forest, so it's beautiful. We spotted several capuchin monkeys and a couple black billed toucans which were gorgeous!
Once at the top, there's a painted pagoda with dragon heads on the ends which offered shade and some seating. There's plenty of parking for those who chose to drive up (from Gávea). So it can get crowded with all the tourist around.
We were lucky to see it on a sunny day, albeit a little hazy. It's got an amazing view of all the famous view points. Cristo seems so close on the left and Molho da Vigal on the right with pão de açúcar and the bonde is visible with some binoculars. It has a placard to show you and famous points if you are unfamiliar with the area.
On the way down we took the windy road which was busy with cars, motorcycles, other pedestrians and cyclists. Kudos to the cyclists who make it all the way to the top; its looks like such hard work. The hike down this way seems far longer (5km) but there is a waterfall with a shallow pool to cool off in if you want. There's also less mosquitos on the road than the hiking trail. In either case bring some water to stay hydrated since there's none to be found on the trail or road.
The road empties into the Jardim Botânico neighborhood and it takes a while to get to a place where you can eat. read more
