Our first meal in Prague! We ducked into this shop to escape from the chilly November air, which gets into your bones. The place is cozy and warm, and the hostess/owner(?) was friendly and helpful.
The place seems to also be home to a lodging of sorts...
The hostess/owner was very courteous, and made the place feel like home. She was kind enough to walk us through the menu, which is printed in multiple languages, with the full menus in each language separated into sections within one book of menus. The Czech language section even has a picture of each dish, which is very helpful when trying to decide if one wants to brave the pork knee (yes, you do), or the traditional Czech plate (meat, with meat, topped with meat--pork chop, duck breast, smoked ham).
My family and I tried a variety of different foods. We started off with the borscht, which was more acidic than some kinds I've tried before, and was green instead of red. I don't have a strong working knowledge of Eastern European soups, however, so it could have been standard.
The hostess recommended Pilsner and Kozel to us--great suggestions on her part. Czech beer is awesome.
After our filling meals of 99% protein, plus bread dumplings (just bread, not sure where the dumpling part is supposed to be) and red cabbage, we were all ready for bed. Of course, it was barely 6pm. Thanks, jet lag.
Overall, I'm glad we discovered this place early on, and got to experience both the traditional food and the good hospitality. Plus, it was there that we discovered a beautiful dark beer. read more
