The Point Market - The place must be run by Millennials: Who cares if the firewood gets wet? We must protect the La Croix at all costs!

The Point Market

Apparently, The Point Market is a Santa Barbara-area mini-empire. I didn't know that before last…read moreweekend, and I doubt that knowledge will ever be useful, but I'm spreading and immortalizing it forever (or until Yelp dies), and who knows? Maybe some of my readers will find that information useful. The gas is a ripoff, but you wouldn't stop here for gas anyway. The bathrooms are clean, which is probably why you stopped here, especially if you're like me and you didn't get enough sleep so you were downing caffeinated liquids like crazy all through your drive and your bladder isn't what it used to be. Did I mention they're clean? Yes, I did. There are two of them, and they're single-user, so you don't need to worry about waiting for the men's or women's room to free up while the other one sits idle. There's no code; there's no key attached to an oil-funnel. Nope, you have to tell the cashier all the way on the other end of the store that you need to use the bathroom, and he'll open it remotely. The snacks are a ripoff as well, but not as much of a ripoff as the gas. There's a huge selection of everything, so if you're going for a beach outing or park picnic, you can stock up on random stuff here, especially if you're bringing along one of those friends who can't picnic without her 100 Grand or specialty coffee drink or macadamia nuts. Return access to the freeway is also pretty simple, so this might be an ideal place for future planned bathroom stops now that Pea Soup Andersen's in Buellton has closed! (I'm so sad about that.)

For management:…read more Great coffee and location. However 5 mins ago I got a coffee and used 2 cups seemingly glued together, couldn't pull the two cups apart so just used 2 cups as one. Didn't have time today to sit there and wrestle them apart, tho I'm a 200 lb rock climber and it shouldn't have been so hard. At payment was TOLD "I charged you for two cups" by the woman working there. I assumed she meant for two cups (like a 75 cent surcharge for the extra cup) but realized she meant two cups of coffee after. Um. The wrongness of this should be evident, but here's a couple versions that would be less egregious: Even "I'll have to charge you for two cups of coffee if you don't separate the cups." Or better, don't charge a person for two cups of cofffee who got one cup of coffee. This is charging for an empty CUP something like 3000% of the cost of the cup for the cup, and that is extortionate, even if the scale is small. This is absolutely unacceptable policy, if it is policy, and needs to be addressed, whether it is or not. Great location though! Also, "I charged you for two cups" is inaccurate is misleading if you charged me for two coffees. That is the necessary language.

Summerland Market & Gas - Expensive gas here

Summerland Market & Gas

On my drive down to L.A. from San Francisco, I got pulled over in San Luis Obispo for speeding. I…read morewasn't going that fast, and I knew almost right away that the cop wasn't going to give me a ticket, so I got off with a verbal warning and drove under the speed limit out of a combination of guilt and fear for the next hour or so. I told myself that I would only get gas when I absolutely needed to, and that happened after Santa Barbara. I exited at Summerland and momentarily felt like I had just entered the messed-up world of a horror movie, but then I remembered that the first victim in those things is usually a really hot teenage girl, so I felt relieved. The town itself seems like nothing more than a little street with shops where you can stock up on going-to-the-beach supplies. The credit-card part of the gas pump was out of order, so I had to go inside to pay. The first thing that hit me was the overpowering aroma of industrial-strength solvent. One of the employees had just finished mopping the floor, and I didn't understand how he or the guy behind the cash register could stand the fumes. I left my credit card and went out to pump my gas. "Pump" might be the wrong word, however, because pump No. 2 at Summerland Market & Gas is officially the slowest pump in the history of the world. I thought that award went to one of the pumps at a gas station on Whittier Boulevard in Whittier, but this place's No. 2 is the new award winner. After two minutes, it had only pumped three gallons. I'm not exaggerating. I came back inside to ask the cashier about it, and he said the pumps were sometimes slow and sometimes really fast. I went back outside and tried to toggle the pump, but it would not stop pumping gas! Normally, this would worry me, but because I knew it would take forever for this thing to overfill my tank, I sauntered back in and had an odd conversation with the cashier. I tried to explain the eventual disaster, but he somehow assured me that it wouldn't happen and that I didn't know how to pump gas properly. All of this with a smile on his face; I'm not sure he understood what I was saying. I picked up some sunflower seeds and soda and went back outside. Twelve-point-three-eight gallons later, the pump did shut off automatically. I paid and was out of here. The store itself is pretty well stocked and clean--OK, it might be a little bit too clean, but I was impressed by all the stuff they had. It would definitely rate four stars if it weren't for the slowest gas pump in the world. Avoid No. 2.

I was on a road trip and needed a restroom and something to eat. This location popped up on my gps…read moreso I stopped in. The restroom was clean, but you need to go inside to have the attendant hit the unlock button. The attendant was very helpful and friendly. They had a large selection of snack and drink items so I was able to make a purchase, use the restroom, and get back on the road quickly.

This review is long overdue for such amazing service we received on our road trip through Santa…read moreBarbara. We can check engine light come on and thought it could be something serious. We pulled into this shop and immediately found how special these people are. Caring, kind and helpful beyond the call is an understatement. First, they diagnosed problem, fixed it for us and came and picked us up when car was finished. Are you serious?!!! The owner himself treated us like family. If you are so lucky to live near this business look no further for a service station. Kindness lives here!! So much appreciated Shelly and Sandy

I let the gas station attendant know that the air machine wasn't working and instead of checking…read moreit, he sat there and told me "if you don't know what you're doing, pay the cashier $10 and he'll do it for you". When I responded that I know exactly what I'm doing and it's weird to charge me to fix their own machine, he said "it's not weird, this isn't a free service". Not budging from his seat, he continued demanding payment to check the air machine. From there, it took a full argument for an employee to finally come out and address their machine's malfunction. And no, it was not user error like the attendant ignorantly claimed. Not only was he blatantly disrespectful for no apparent reason other than sexism, his behavior was illegal according to CA Code Section 13651. If you expect basic civility with your patronage, don't spend money here.
