It's so hard to find good pho these days! In Newcastle, anyway. To be fair, this is the closest we've got so far, and we'll definitely be back, but there are still a few areas I think could be improved.
Viet Café is a small café that also offers takeaway, and they're connected to a Vietnamese/Asian grocery store, so you can have a browse while you wait for your food. They offer rice dishes, banh mi, and a ton of vegetarian options, but I went for the traditional beef pho, as did my husband.
For only about £7.50, we received large bowls of steaming beef noodle soup. The plate of garnish that usually comes with pho was really disappointing - mainly beansprouts and iceberg lettuce (!!) with two tiny stems of basil. The herbs are really what makes pho wonderful - it should be served with basil, mint, and coriander as well as sprouts. Iceberg lettuce just felt like a tragedy. The broth itself was nice but not very rich in flavour, although adding fish sauce and sriracha (on all the tables) made a huge difference and the dish transformed into something comforting and lovely. I just wish it was like that to begin with - at the great pho places, I don't need to doctor the broth at all, it tastes like it's been cooking all day. There were a ton of noodles and a good portion of beef in each bowl, so we certainly appreciated that they didn't skimp. And with the broth sufficiently doctored, we enjoyed our meals and it was certainly the best pho in town - but there isn't much competition. I think with a bit of work on the broth recipe, and some proper herbs served alongside, this pho place could be elevated into something really wonderful! Still, even as is I know we'll be back - maybe we'll buy some herbs in the supermarket next door - as pho is simply the perfect Sunday hangover food. read more
