Veterinary care gets real when the dog is scared, sick, huge, complicated, or dying. Vida has met those moments for me across four dogs and 13 years. My current dog, Mama, is a 140-pound Bullmastiff rescue from a puppy mill. She recently came in for an ear infection and wedged herself under my chair in the lobby like she was trying to disappear. Naturally, she got stuck. Vida handled her calmly and competently, with no drama. They called between visits to check on her and didn't charge for the follow-up. That is what I've come to appreciate. When Mama once refused to get out of the car for vaccinations, the vet came outside and treated her while she crouched in the passenger footwell. When Anja, my independent white shepherd, needed coaxing, they worked with her temperament. Peanut butter helped. When Roger, my stoic pandemic dog, developed cancer, they explained the tradeoffs between extending his life and protecting his quality of life. I never felt pressured or rushed. And when Churro, my starved Bullmastiff rescue, reached the end, they were exceptional. He was taller than Mama, only 90 pounds, aggressive, complicated, and dying from cirrhosis of the liver. They didn't judge him or flinch. They gave him dignity, and they gave me space to cry and say goodbye. Vida is clean, organized, responsive, easy to schedule online, and transparent about costs. They are not cheap. But that's the price of unconditional love. The front desk is usually efficient and welcoming, though one recent visit felt more abrupt than usual. I've been a loyal customer with this vet for at least 18 years, from back when they were called University Hills Animal Hospital and were housed in a tiny building across the street. Even when I moved to Aurora, I continued bringing my dogs to Vida because of the terrific hours- 7am-7pm- clean and modern facility, variety of in-house services, and kind staff. Yesterday, however, I decided to find a new vet, closer to my home and locally owned and operated because of a series of negative events with a new vet involving a misdiagnosis, unnecessary X-rays and 3 unnecessary appointments. When my newly adopted dog presented with an obvious case of kennel cough from the shelter, this vet did not immediately treat her with antibiotics and cough suppressants. Instead, I had to wait until the cough got worse and come back the next day for a second appointment to get medicine and an expensive X-ray. According to this vet, the X-ray showed a collapsing trachea. The vet handed me a printed article on collapsing tracheas with an odd smile on her face, neglecting to explain much at all about the condition, but recommending a humidifier. I read the article she gave me as well as other reputable articles online and discovered to my horror that this is a very serious condition that shortens some dogs' lives significantly and causes the dog extreme distress. The research recommended sedatives and warned against humidifiers. I had to call the vet and ask for sedatives myself. She also assured me that my old dog would not catch what the newly adopted dog had. A week later, my old dog had the kennel cough and my new dog's cough was back, so I called Vida and asked for more antibiotics- a course of action that seemed a no-brainer- but I was told instead that I had to have another appointment to do another $450+ X-ray in addition to antibiotics. I was told I had to make yet another appointment for the following week to hear the radiologist's opinion and ostensibly to discuss the trachea condition and my dog's grim future. When I arrived for the 4th appointment, the vet assistant was talking about doing a third X-ray even though my dog was no longer coughing. I had to ask about the radiologist report myself. The report had apparently come back several days before, but no one had informed me of its contents. The vet assistant read me the report that showed zero collapsing of the trachea. She went to go speak with a doctor about the confusing situation and left us alone in the room for over 15 minutes. I left the office in frustrated tears because this appointment was completely unnecessary and an expensive waste of time. Although I am so relieved that my dog is healthy and doesn't have a horrible condition, I am furious with the misdiagnosis and the miscommunication and the unnecessary X-rays and the unnecessary appointments. All together with my other dog's dental cleaning, and the 3 appointments and two X-rays for the new dog, and one appointment for my dog that inevitably caught the kennel cough from the new dog, I spent $3,000 at Vida in just 10 days. The team at Vida always greet my dog warmly and remember her. They are great at explaining things and answering questions and always follow up with a personal call after tests or procedures. My dog has had to have 2 surgeries now to remove masses and both times, they did a great job and were very compassionate. The office is always clean and seems to be run well. read more

I wouldn't recommend going here it's a little scamish. My 3 yr old cat had been vomiting on and off for a few weeks but was otherwise fine I had explained to the phone operator his symptoms and they put me on hold to talk to the doctor- I had originally just wanted to make an appointment for a head to toe checkup for a week later and was convinced it was urgent that I get him seen as soon as possible when again I had requested a appointment a week later as I was tight on money at the time. They had told me it would only be a 15$ up charge so me thinking it's an emergency I agree to take him in 45 minutes after the call. When the veterinarian is looking him over she says he seems to be in very good health but then says he needs blood work-I ask how much it is and she tells me it will be over 200$ which I had already told her I need to go the cheapest way possible eventually I was once again made to think this was urgent by being told he may be suffering with a thyroid issue or even something cancerous.While they took him back to get his bloodwork the veterinarian was talking to me about medication (antibiotics) when we didn't even know what was wrong with him-I asked how much extra it would be and she said it would be 40$+ extra mid you I had already racked up about a 285$ bill by now and wasn't looking to make it 325$ so I had told her no I don't want any medication right now. By the end of the appointment they had a credit card machine in the check up room which is very odd as I have never seen a veterinarian office bill you in the room before. Later on that day around 6pm I get a text message saying "[my cats name] Forti Flora is ready to be picked up at your convenience. Vida Vet Care Denver" I thought it must be his blood work results which I thought was odd because the veterinarian had told me I should be expecting a call on Monday but I just chopped it up to it must have gotten done early so I drive down and talk to the front desk women to which I show her the message I was sent and was told "oh the medication" I asked her if it was already paid for and she said it had been. I had made it clear I didn't want the medicine and was charged for it anyway. If you value your money and your pet don't waste your time . read more

I've been taking my animals here for a few years. The prices have slowly gone up over the years, which I've dealt with because the care was ok. But today, today was absolutely unacceptable. I had a scheduled euthanasia for my senior cat. Let me preface the rest of the review with, the vet tech that helped us was very kind. However, the lack of guidance and empathy from who I can only assume was the vet, because she didn't introduce herself before bursting into the room without explaining anything, or asking if we were ready before euthanasia was more than shocking, it was traumatic. When my daughter asked to speak to the "red head" because what occurred was so entirely insensitive, she could hear her on the other side of the wall making jokes about coming in to talk to us. The process of putting a family pet down is already incredibly sad, it should not be traumatic on top of it. I will never bring my pets back or recommend Vida Vet Care to anyone ever again. If you care about your family mental health and your pets, go somewhere else. read more

I would be remiss if I didn't update my essay of a review I left here the other day, I know I left a scathing review but I feel VIDA has definitely salvaged their reputation with me since last Friday. I received a call on Sunday from them, and I truly was not interested in speaking with them after everything so I sent their call to voicemail. They left a VM and texted me to let me know they had a cancellation for Wednesday and could now fit my little bunzo in for a dental trim. I had my fiancé call them back and discuss details, and in the end we agreed on the estimate and paid them a $100 deposit for a dental appt on Wed. We were told we would get a call on Tue evening to discuss drop-off time/details but we ended up having to initiate a call to them in the evening to confirm exactly what time we were dropping off since we never heard back. Today was the drop-off day and intake process went smoothly. We told the vet tech that did our intake that we didn't want the IV catheter ($75-ish) since we didn't feel it necessary (our bunny handles anesthesia very well) but the DR doing the dental was busy with an emergency and couldn't come speak to us at drop-off. I got a call around noon letting me know the procedure went well. Apparently she got the memo to not IV cath at the last moment because she had just shaved some of his fur before being passed the info. Fur grows back, so it's not an issue for me. Would have only been a problem if we were actually charged for a procedure we didn't want. Pickup was great and when I forgot to get my paper receipt I called and left a VM requesting an email receipt and promptly received it as well as a text confirmation they sent it over. All in all, I'm thankful they were able to fit my little guy in for a teeth trim. He's back at home and already eating again. I think communication can still be improved within the business and client relationship, but as I stated before, my main priority is the health and comfort of my rabbit and I have zero complaints about this facility's capability at this point. I don't know how often we'll be bringing him here since we see another vet for primary care, but I have zero issues with bringing him back to VIDA if necessary. Thanks, VIDA. read more

They REQUIRE a YEARLY "wellness check" ($85) simply to have a common heartguard med refilled. Most humans don't even have annual "wellness checks." Their goal is to get you in and up-sell you. I felt very pressured and shamed to have bloodwork done ($$$) due to use of heartguard med, along with other suggested not-needed tests. Income/profit seems to be the reoccurring business-model theme, not care for pets. The Manager has stated that the State requires them to have an established relationship with you and your pet prior to filling any medications. That is true, but their deception comes in when they do not mention that the State does NOT require an annual wellness check with an established relationship, and I have taken my dog there regularly for years. I'm disappointed in this veterinarian business. On a visit there a year or so ago, they didn't seem to have any of my dog's records. I was told that they were updating their system and he may have slipped through the cracks. That's the only vet my 8-year-old dog has ever been to. Jump ahead to a few weeks ago and I called in to see why they hadn't filled a prescription by the request of the pharmacy. They said I would have to bring my dog in for an exam because they had no record of him ever having been on the medication even though he's been on it for years with plenty of refills without a problem. First I want to say that Vida has been there for us through some very difficult times with our animals. We trust our pets to their care. We appreciate the flexible hours and how often they have arranged to accommodate us in squeezing us in when it was critical. Doctors and staff have always been very kind and professional in the past. Yes, it can certainly be difficult to get someone on the phone, and that can be frustrating but overall, it's a good practice and I've recommended Vida to my friends. I do, however, have to say how horribly disappointed I was with our experience last night. We had to bring a very ill kitty in to have her euthanized, which is always traumatic, long before the deed is actually done. I'm quite sure that it is really tough on doctors and staff to have to deal with people in such grief, and to have to end the life of a pet. It's a tough job. The tech we met with and the doctor who helped us were both very professional, articulate and helpful. My complaint is not with them, it is with the raucous, loud staff gathering just a few feet outside our door. Here we are, grief stricken and trying to say goodbye to our kitty, and it sounds like a party is going on around the corner. I'm not exaggerating, unfortunately. There was cackling and loud, excited conversations that went on pretty much the whole time we were there. That's fine if you work in a gym or a nightclub, or if there's no customers around, but not if you've got grieving people with a dying cat right next door. I don't know if the room we were taken to is the only quiet place for euthanasia that Vida has. If that's the case then they should either choose another location, or do what other practices do: post a sign asking that people be respectful and quiet. It really is not much to ask. Last night I felt that the behavior of the staff was disrespectful, unprofessional, discourteous and insensitive. Wouldn't the doctor say something, ask them to keep it down and be sensitive to the situation? I would have thought so. Finding a good vet is very difficult these days, and I thought I had found one. Now I am not so sure. I hope management will address this issue so other customers won't be so horribly upset by the same kind of situation. I first went to Vida with a sick cat about two years ago. They quickly diagnosed kidney failure and kept him a couple days to try and treat him. His health improved slightly but then his lab work went South and the vet was very honest with me about his prospects for a good life. I decided to have him euthanized and the staff was terrific. I've taken my two miniature dachshunds to Vida for routine examinations and spaying and neutering. Just this month I got a new cat from the Denver animal shelter and they allowed me to bring the cat and my two dachshunds in for a check up and shots. I bought Tank from a pet shop after waiting 3 months for them to treat her, their vet did not deal with exotic animals so they cleared her even though she still had a life threatening respiratory infection. I am so grateful for Tanks Dr and the entire staff at Vida Vet for giving my Tank a fighting chance at surviving. At vida vet they are always so empathetic, welcoming and transparent with costs or procedures. I hope Dr.Zalesak never goes anywhere because she is definitely an asset. One of my dogs was severely constipated and required an enema. He was in a pretty bad way when we got up last Saturday morning, and I called my regular vet immediately but they gave us the cold shoulder and suggested an ER visit. I am fully cognizant of the fact that this was a Saturday morning, and likely busy, but as a regular patient of theirs I expected a modicum of compassion from them. I waited 2 hours for them to call me back just to suggest I give him more fiber (ridiculous given that they know his history of GI issues) even after explaining that this was urgent and he needed to be seen today - I was pissed. I told them to forget it and I would be looking for a new veterinarian. I had taken him in for a previous emergency to Vida and decided to give him a call instead or going to an ER vet. I got an appointment within a few hours of my call and EVERY PERSON was so so sweet to me and sympathetic to our situation. I think prices are on par with other area vets so I have no complaints there. The tech going over our discharge with me was incredibly thorough and really put me at ease. They took great care of my boy. I will certainly be going to Vida from now on. I wish I had the names of every person I spoke to and interacted with so I can thank them personally. We rushed my old girl here last week. Unfortunately, the vets let us know it was her time. They sat in the floor with me and old girl and explained why this was the best choice (even cried with me). They were very kind and helpful - this wasn't her primary vet but it was the closest one. They made her feel at home and let us bring her home for a last day and night with her. To start- I am EXTREMELY picky on vets for my dog because we had a bad experience where he was traumatized by an abusive vet so rightfully, he's a little Cujo with vets now. We needed to make an emergency vet visit at 10pm one night because my dog hurt his paw and it was infected. While he was super stressed at being there, the staff was amazing and got him taken care of without trying to force anything to stress him out more. They were nice, courteous and very caring. I wish that I could give this place negative stars. I have a parrot who may have an impacted crop or infection because his behavior is off. I called ahead to make sure a vet able to see avian cases was available. There are no other emergency vets that see birds in Denver. I explained what was going on and the person spoke with the vet and then told me to come in right away. I get to the clinic and I wait over an hour and a half. The vet tech comes in the room to tell me that the vet can't see me now and I can return tomorrow at 2. So suddenly it isn't deemed an emergency for my pet who never even saw the vet, was NEVER even touched or examined by anyone at this clinic? Not even a check to make sure? No one else came in the clinic as I waited which means that I wasted an hour and a half sitting there when I could have been driving up to CSU to get my bird care. Here's my thing. I get that emergency cases come up. I never complained waiting. But at least have the common decency to check that my pet is ok to leave and go to the avian vet the next day, particularly when there are NO other emergency avian vets within an hour. Also advise your staff to exercise basic manners and compassion- absolutely no one wants to be at the ER vet at night worried about their pet. I do not recommend this vet. Parrot owners, make the trek up to Fort Collins at CSU if need be, go to Homestead in Centennial if it's during the day, but do NOT trust these people. read more

We brought our Conure to them on Thursday night (10/3/19) for an ER visit. They examined him. Found a bacterial infection. Prescribed antibiotics. Said he was going to be fine. We followed their directions. 36 hours later he's dead. (10/5/19). UPDATE: 10-7-19 - Received lab results where Vida noted him as a Sun Conure when he was a Green Cheek Conure. Clear and substantial difference for those that know birds. read more

I would rate zero stars if I could.. this place is a joke. I've been waiting for almost a year to post this review cause I was just too traumatized and upset, that I haven't been able to put forth my thoughts. I was also thinking it wasn't worth it, but honestly... people need to be warned about this place, so I'm doing it for the good of humanity. We took my 7 year old talking parakeet to this place in desperation when he was sick and they charged us $500 to give a few useless shots. The thing that is the most infuriating to me, is that we brought his cage with his DIET (Roudy Bush Pellets), and they just ignored the food and switched it to Zupreem (LARGE SEEDS) for cockatiels and even medium size birds. They switched his food to something that was WAY larger than what he could swallow... causing a starvation effect. They put him in an "incubator" and he died the next day. I cannot believe a "vet" would change a bird's diet... it's vet 101 to know that you can never change a bird's diet. Needless to say, I was able to see my baby the next morning when he passed away. My parakeet hung on to see us and say goodbye. This rude red-headed technician came in, shoving papers/waivers about the death of our bird, in our face, which we did not sign. She also got snippy with my husband who asked us to just give us a moment. The worst part is that the rude red-headed "tech" said he was already sick... and the diet didn't matter. The actual vet/doc on staff had ZERO explanation for the diet change, other than she was not on "duty." Seriously, get your staff together... vet 101. I'm still infuriated and will never ever return here. Do not bring your pet here... they'll charge you a fortune and be complete assholes to you... these people are not qualified. STAY AWAY. CAUTION. I felt like my 7 year old child died, and this place is garbage. PS. We didn't pay the full cost on the spot cause they charged us an extra $100... and then they immediately sent it to collections the next day after our baby died on a Sunday. Also... 4 STARS? After becoming aware of the fact that this place is the worst and they have docs who are afraid of my German Shepherd for no good reason, I left. I was pretty pissed, if you can't tell from my below reviews. I just wanted to come back with an update after finding another vet. 1. This place is expensive for not great quality of care. 2. My dog does not need anxiety medication to be seen by a vet, despite what Vida claimed. If the vet isn't acting weird and afraid of her, she's not only not anxious, she's actually happy to see them. 3. These people will take your dog in the back for every single little thing, and I thought that was kind of annoying but I figured that was just the way things were done. NOPE. The whole thing makes way more sense now, they aren't great with being calm and handling an animal in pain and they don't want the owner around to see that or make it worse. I mean, OK? But my new vet is actually good with animals, so, not a problem for them to examine her/give shots/ etc without pulling her "in the back." Not a good spot, esp. If you have a dog breed people think is scary. P. S. I moved and my new vet is really far away, so unfortunately I can't recommend them to people in this area, but do check around because I don't recommend Vida. read more

Then I was pressured and not informed and spent so much money for them to give me misinformation and for my bird to still not be better. As a follow up to my review from yesterday, I called up Vida to remove my appointment for my cat's well exams and get my money back., as I'm obviously taking my business elsewhere. Seems they don't think I'm a good customer anymore because I'm very unhappy, actually pissed, about what's going on with them and I've let them know that. Bottom line, they didn't book my appointment like they stated they would and didn't hit my card. They also didn't notify me of this decision on their part. Fact remains, if you read the reviews from the last few years, you'll see I'm in good company. Instead of punishing people who call it as they see it, they should be working on correcting the issues they have created. I'm not the problem here, their lack of customer service is the issue. If they treat their customers like this, can you really trust them to treat your beloved pets with the care and concern they deserve????? Think about it! Wish I could give negative stars. I've actually been using this vet group for 50 years starting with my dogs as a child when it was University Hills Animal Hospital with Dr. Tinsman. I continued to use them when I became an adult with my own pets. They were great until about 1 to 2 years ago. No one ever answers the phone anymore. To get my animals claws trimmed, I had to travel way out of the way to their Centennial clinic which I did. Although I can now use the Warren street location, it takes weeks to get the animals in for a trim and then the price has increased exponentially over the past few years. I just found out today that my cats are way overdue for their wellness screenings and shots. They used to send a notice to let you know to make an appointment. Now apparently, you have to sign up at a notification website. I never received this link from them, so my animals are way overdue. I actually asked them to send me this link via email this morning, and nothing, just like when you try to call and speak with someone! I have to admit I lost my s**t with the person on the phone this morning when I asked her what was going on there? I explained how long I've been a client and I couldn't believe that no one could answer the phone, no one notified me of this new website, etc., and her response to me was she would be happy to send my pet's records to me. Needless to say, I acted like a frigging Karen and she hung up on me which was deserved. What's not deserved, is the new policy that you must pay for your pet's wellness visit before it even happens now. I just had my card hit for $170.00 for 2 well exams to take place in a few weeks. If you don't cancel 24 hours in advance, you loose your money. These are cats, it's possible I may not be able to find one of them or get them in the carriers when the time comes (although that's never happened to me!). Although I understand that people cancel and don't call, etc., I have many years of loyal service and have never missed or been late for an appointment. Apparently, that doesn't matter. We have been going here for 7 years. I set up an appointment when I had to have our 15 year old dog euthanized, The staff and doctor were rude. They were so unsympathetic as to what was going to happen that I left sobbing and went elsewhere. read more

Unbelievable. This staff is unfriendly, only cares about money, is horrible to deal with and rude. They schedule you for the wrong appointments and then blame you for showing up with the wrong expectations. I've never seen anything like this. Called at 11:50pm, knowing they close at midnight but wanted suggestions about what my cat was going through and if I should be worried and try to get into a place that is open or if I was over reacting. Person on the phone was very unhelpful. Kept saying I should call and go to a clinic that was open if I'm worried because they were closing. Said I knew they were closing but was hoping for some insight as to if they thought the symptoms were worrisome? Kept telling me to take my cat in if I was worried to a place that was open. The entire interaction was not helpful. Would not recommend. read more

****update-**** As seen below, the vet staff did contact me to notify me of the billing mistake and got everything straightened out. The staff was once again kind tonight during another emergency. They were efficient and took time to explain everything, just like last time. They also made sure to tell me that the rechecks are included in the quote to eliminate confusion. Despite a billing error last time, the care was top notch and it seems they took the prior feedback and implemented changes for explaining the estimates and what they cover. I will definitely be bringing my guys back here. I had a rat that needed emergency care and was referred to Vida as being the only exotic emergency in the local area besides CSU teaching hospital in Fort Collins. He had a pretty bad laceration exposing muscle that couldn't wait for normal hours. I arrived, paid the reasonable 95$ emergency fee and paid close to 600$ total for the surgery and meds to go home. I was instructed to bring him back for a recheck in 10 days. This is also standard with each vet I've been to involving sutures. What surprised and perturbed me enough to leave this review was the re-check fee, nearly 40$. Every vet I've been to in two states emergency or not has their recheck fees either built into the surgery cost or doesn't even charge one. What made it irritating was when I was instructed to come in for a re-check, I was never told they charged for it. If I would have known that, I would have gone to my normal vet who likely would have charged me ZERO. I waited longer for the tech to weigh my animal and ask questions that the vet also asked me. I physically picked up my rat to show her his sutures (which are absorbable and didn't even require removal). They trimmed one small piece, which I easily could have accomplished at home. Sure, I'm not a vet, but as a person who previously worked at an animal hospital, had had sutured animals and sutures myself, I could see his skin had healed beautifully. So although I am greatful for the swiftness they sewed up poor Carbon, I am looking for a vet who has more transparent and upfront discussions of costs. read more

This place provides a much needed service in our neighborhood. A great vet that open for emergencies. Our sweet pet Pomeranian started bleeding from her mouth yesterday. This place is very unprofessional. They have no idea what their services will cost. They want you to pay 80$ just to go in and then get a mystery price on the service. Whatever they come up with off the top of there head when you go in. They tell you "don't worry, we can put you in debt with our own personal credit line for service." If you have unlimited amounts of money then maybe they are ok, I would know because im on a fixed income. So I guess ill just have to cross my fingers and hope my birds broken nail doesn't get infected and fester cause nobody gives a shit about people who are struggling. read more

I'd highly recommend Vida Vet Care to anyone new to town or just looking for a new vet. We have had our dogs here twice now and each time the vets and techs were great with our dogs. Dr. Rachelson is really nice. She took excellent care of our little one when she needed a tooth pulled. Dr. Delaney did her procedure for the tooth extraction and did an excellent job. Everything healed up well and no complications. They Explained everything thoroughly, had the procedure done within a week of scheduling and we had her home that day. They called a few days later to see how our dog was doing and if we had any questions or concerns. It's been easy to schedule their appointments and have had no issues. Definitely worth considering as your vet. We will return for any of our dogs needs in the future. read more

My cat suddenly was nearly dead when I woke up one morning much to my horror. I called Vida and started bawling on the phone and they were like bring him in now we'll get everything ready. So I brought him in and the doc immediately knew what was wrong - cat was blocked (description below). He was in such bad shape they weren't sure if he would make it, but he pulled through and I think the staff here is exceptional. Had he been in anyone else's hands who knows if he would've been able to pull through like that so I really give a lot of credit to Doctor Schroeder (and maybe it was Hicks who took him initially I can't remember) and the staff; they know what they're doing! A blockage is a kidney stone or something that gets stuck in the urethra so your cat can't pee. It happens with males more so than females and usually is a result of not drinking enough water. So he couldn't pee, literally until it started backing up into his bloodstream poor guy it was really hard to see him like that and it escalated overnight from something I didn't notice to him being almost dead. If you notice your cat sitting in the litter box and nothing is happening, and frequently going back and straining, take him in immediately. If you catch it early it's not a huge deal but 6 hours later and it might be too late to save him. The doctor recommended I get a fountain for him and that made a huge difference. Turns out he doesn't like standing water but he loves running water. It's been 4 years and he hasn't re-blocked. read more

I want to let everyone know that these people are absolutely the best. In a time of crises for our family they went above and beyond for us. I was more then impressed with all the doctors and the care and comfort they gave to our pet Maximus and to us. There are not enough words to express our gratitude.
