Some experiences don't feel like "events" -- they feel like memories the moment you're in them…read more This was one of those. I attended the 2025 Fairview Church Candlelit Christmas Carol Service, which they've now done for 17 years, and I'm still thinking about it days later. 145 people packed into a tiny, historic church, lit only by oil lamps and candles, warmed by the original woodstove. No microphones. No screens. No piano or organ. No tech of any kind. Just people. And voices. And the collective desire to be part of something simple, meaningful, and beautiful. The service included traditional carols, a short devotional, and then attendee-selected carols, which somehow made it feel even more communal and intimate. There was something incredibly grounding about singing alongside strangers in a 168-year-old church, surrounded by the Tuscarora State Forest, knowing that generations before us had gathered in this same space. It was breathtaking, quiet, humbling, and deeply moving -- in a way that's hard to explain unless you were there. No frills, no spectacle, just authenticity. The church itself is beautiful, not because it's fancy, but because of its history and care. Built in 1857 using locally sourced stone, brick, and timber, it served the Toboyne Township community for decades before being lovingly preserved by the Historical Society of Perry County. You can feel that history the moment you step inside. Logistics note for fellow planners: parking is grassy (AWD helps), there's no electricity or modern heat beyond the woodstove, and accessibility is limited -- but honestly, those details are part of what makes the experience what it is. I loved this service so much that I'm planning to make it my newest Christmas tradition. It reminded me why gathering -- truly gathering -- still matters. If you ever have the chance to attend this candlelit service, don't hesitate. It's something I'll remember being part of for many years to come.
