I could have a restoration or I could have a renovation - if I could find the right person. I needed someone who could step into a very confusing situation of 4 insurance companies; 3 adjusters, 2 remediation companies and me - a person who has never dealt with a renovation, never-mind a renovation under the umbrella of an insurance claim during a really bad flood season in Vancouver. I started getting estimates. Who knew that a tiny kitchen renovation could cost as much as $45,000? This was far out of the range of possibilities as the insurance companies were only willing to pay a measly compensation for our losses. I never want to hear the words: "you are not supposed to benefit from insurance" again. Apparently, benefit means getting anything that is a bit nicer than the 1980's sewage coated kitchen that had been removed. I asked Westside Handyman Group to come and give us a quote after finding it here on Yelp and reading the reviews - even though the reviews showed as not recommended, they looked legit to me. Mark is more of a handshake guy, but he was willing to write things up for me. He gave us a quote and a ton of advice as to how we could bring in a kitchen renovation that was within the budget that we were going to receive from the insurance claim. He even broke it down into 3 phases based on the work and the provision of funds. The job was dragged out over months, because the insurance money came in slowly and because the cabinets that we ordered took 8 weeks to be created and delivered. Mark was always reassuring and confident. He encouraged us in the process and he made the time to do the work even though by the time the cabinets arrived, he had moved on to multiple other projects. He even helped us out with advice and tool loans when we decided to do the floor tiling ourselves! The job was finished up this last weekend (Easter weekend, but Mark came over to put on the finishing touches). I have a new kitchen now. It was torn down to the studs; the old fashioned sunshine ceiling was removed and a new ceiling with pot lights was installed. I have new cupboards and an over the range microwave. The old fashioned wall that separated the kitchen from the dining area is gone and it's now an open concept kitchen with small bar. Plus I have a huge wine rack that is attached to the wall. It's a lot nicer kitchen now. And, very importantly to me - the cost was as quoted. I can say without reservation that if there is any work that we need down in the future, the first and hopefully only contact we will make, will be with Mark of the Westside Handyman Group.

Kav, Karim, and the team at Goldcon Construction are absolutely amazing. Words really cannot…read moredescribe how grateful we are to Goldcon - but since this is a Google review, I will try my best to paint a picture of how we worked together. Prior to selecting Goldcon, we had interviewed about 15 contractors. All of them were great sales people, they all sounded like they knew what they were doing, so narrowing it down was difficult. We eventually got it down to 3 companies (Goldcon and 2 others) and signed up to a design document with 1 of them that was not Goldcon. Typically in construction the contractors will charge a "Cost Plus" model or a "Fixed Price". For fixed price, you need to have a perfectly crafted scoping document so you know exactly what you are paying for. For "Cost Plus" you are paying a percentage on top of the cost of the project. Virtually all the contractors wanted to use a Cost Plus Model given all the uncertainties with supplies and labour. I just didn't like this idea because it didn't feel like the contractors would make an effort to negotiate the best price for us. Goldcon was one of the only contractors that was willing to do a fixed price for the build - but they were concerned that we would need to submit a variety of change orders if the supplies that we had chosen were out of stock. So we decided to settle on a fixed management fee and pay Goldcon in installments that were tied to milestones reached. As soon as we signed on the dotted lines, they got to work. And they worked fast. Trades were organized extremely efficiently, one after another. Multiple quotes were presented to us for each trade and they often were able to get their existing partners to match prices of lower price suppliers. Design ideas were brought to the table and discussed at length, but very quickly and efficiently. Communication was effortless, we setup a WhatsApp group and kept a history of all the things we discussed. When we had a difference of opinion, they always reverted back to "It's your house, you have whatever you like, but we just think XYZ would make the most sense". This was reassuring to us and most of the times we ended up going with their suggestions and it paid off. At no point in the process did we feel like we were being bullied into doing something or were we uncomfortable with the process. So overall, there are 100's of reasons to choose Goldcon and ZERO reasons to work with someone else. If you are looking for a builder for a new house or to do a larger renovation, Goldcon is the only company that I would recommend. I would be happy to speak with anyone personally that is interested in hiring them and would be thrilled to be a reference. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. The carpet in the apartment was really old and the bathroom needed a new vanity. Kaveh helped me pick out the laminate flooring that would look good and that I didn't have to spend and arm and leg to get. They quickly took out the disgusting old carpet and installed the new flooring which looks great. Second, they took out the old rusted vanity and added a new vanity which really makes my fiancé happy. I love coming to a home which I can be comfortable in and a home that looks good. All because Goldcon did a great job fixing the place up just the way I wanted. The service from Goldcon was amazing and I'm happy that my friend introduced me to this company. Thanks again.
