April 11, Montmartre Pastry and Chocolate Food Tour, Paris…read more Our family of four with a son 9 and daughter 10 did a pastry and chocolate tour through Montmartre and it ended up being a really fun way to explore the area. Arrival and First Impressions The group was small, just our family and another family, which worked out well. The shops we visited were tiny so taking turns going in and out was part of the experience. Our guide was knowledgeable and walked us through side streets, small parks, and local spots we would never have found on our own. The Highlights We stopped at six different locations including chocolatiers, bakeries, and pastry shops. Highlights included a choux pastry, crepes, madeleines, artisan eclairs, and multiple chocolate tastings. The final stop for hot chocolate and macarons was excellent. The macarons were so good we ended up buying some to bring home. The tour was not just about food. We saw the Love Wall, hidden streets, and learned about the history of Montmartre including small details about the neighborhood that made it feel more personal. The Challenges The guide did not have a very loud voice so in a bigger group it might have been harder to follow, but with our small group it worked fine. Would We Return Yes, especially to try a different tour. It was a great mix of food and exploring. Final Thoughts This tour is a great way to experience Montmartre beyond just walking around. The combination of food, history, and hidden locations made it a memorable and worthwhile experience.

Their ticket purchasing process is misleading and unethical. You go about filling our information,…read morelike you do for many websites, but unlike any other website, you hit the "Next" button (for the third time) and suddenly you have purchased the ticket, without any opportunity to review your tour date, number of participants or even credit card info. All the previous "Next" buttons led to the next step in the process, as is implied by the word and as you would expect, but not this one - it is the final confirmation of purchase even though there is NO indication that this is about to happen. Then they tell you that there are no refunds under any circumstances and that the credit and ticketing laws do not apply to them. Perhaps this is because they are based in Cyprus, which I assume they have chosen precisely to evade regulations. Note that they say there are no refunds no matter what - even if your overall trip gets cancelled or the tour gets cancelled or the guide does not show up. Be very careful, or better yet, avoid these folks and do any of the other more legitimate tours out there for wherever you are travelling to.

You can bank on that. He was very knowledgeable, kind and patience. He has great photography skill so you're guaranteed to have great photos in Paris. He's also a foodie so he'll show you all the best places to eat in Paris, like a local. He saved us so much time and trouble. You will not regret your time with him. It was part of our pass we bought, but still we felt like we wasted time going on this. It took forever from going to one point of interest to the next. Some of the stops were not available to go to due to season or timing. The bus was a double decker. You can sit in the top area to see the city views. The bus looked great from the outside but from the inside it was not very clean. If you do decide to buy the bus pass, there are 24/48 hour validation options. Side Note: When you get the receipt for the bus pass, the bottom of the receipt has WiFi information and password.

We were fine the first 10-15 minutes but started worrying if it was coming at all. I tried the "track the bus" function on the website but it did not work. I called into the number on the website and it said the office was closed but if it was urgent or something regarding a current trip, to press star to be brought to the emergency line. After I pressed it, there is a voice recording saying it was experiencing high volumes of calls and that I should contact the ticket booths, the website or try calling again. It then cuts the line and not allow you to wait at all. Throughout the next 45 minutes, I made a total of 8 calls spread out, but not once was I able to get through. 1 hour after the supposed departure time, we were fed up and ready to pay whatever train we can find to get us to Dusseldorf. That was when the bus showed up. I note that they have my contact information including my email through which they sent my tickets . Why was there no communication whatsoever on the 1 hr delay and why was there no way for the customer to contact to find out what was going on? It feels helpless when you are in a foreign place especially at nighttime and dependent on your bus to arrive. By the way, after the bus arrived, there were no apologies or any explanation from the driver for being so late. Driver's attitude was also not the best. Definitely will avoid Eurolines at all costs.

We couldn't believe we'd found a nearby shop carrying road bikes at a decent price (45E the first day and 20E after). (A specialty road-bike-rental competitor was way on the south edge of town & 60E/30E.) AlloVelo isn't really a road-bike store (all-purpose neighborhood bike store), so the selection isn't huge, but it got us through (1-2 each 49cm, 52cm, 55cm, etc.). Sadly, they didn't carry any extra stems, so there was no swap available to adjust the fit. The owner was very generous about what hours counted as a "day" (take it the night before, return it the morning after) and very flexible about duration ("keep it longer and pay me the rest when you return it"). That said...the bikes were not well-maintained. God bless the owner for keeping a bike shop in the neighborhood, but I think he has emotionally "checked out" of his business. Many aspects of the business had a low-cost, low-effort vibe. The tires on both bikes were dangerously bald and pockmarked. The tubes (conventional pump-up) had, for some reason, been glued into the tires. (To get more life instead of throwing the tube away?) We had our first explosive flat within the first 2 miles. (Pinch flat.) The glue didn't exactly make changing the tube easy. Then there were the slow leaks. More like medium leaks - "get to the Bois de Boulogne, pump up, ride, pump up, limp back into town, pump up..." But you never know when lack of maintenance on tires and tubes can develop from a nuisance into a danger, which is why they should be kept better-maintained. And the dirt on the chains ... wow. Chains should be kept silver, not black like ours. It takes a lot of work, but that's part of why rental bikes cost a lot of money. We took our bikes in mid-rental for a cleaning and were told they weren't dirty. Someone gave them a quick dash of lube and one or two rubs and insisted they were clean. So we bought oil-based lube from them and said we'd do it ourselves. We got the chains silver again but turned two hotel washcloths completely black (sorry!). You know the size dirt-clump that comes out of the treads of your shoe after you've gone hiking and let the mud dry? That's the size of black grease-debris clump falling out of the chains as we rubbed them down with a rag. As a testament to the bikes and what maintenance the shop does do, they shifted tolerably before and reasonably well after the cleaning. The brakes worked. We got through! And you probably could, too, if you don't mind doing the maintenance the shop didn't. But if this sounds like a bit much for you, sadly, as of early 2016, AlloVelo is probably not the road-bike rental store for you. (Also, funny story...as we bought the oil, we asked if they could sell us water bottles. They brought us two for free. Neat! And...asked us to return them with the bikes. At which point we realized they were "rental water bottles" and, given the state of the chain cleaning ... eww. We thanked them, took the bottles with us ... and bought some grocery-store bottled water to carry in our back pockets. All around, we got the impression that AlloVelo's idea of good customer service meant "low cost to the customer." They're nice folks ... they're just not for people who are finicky about their bike rentals.) Note: 3 reviews about the shop itself (all 1-star & in French) are marked hidden. I suspect the owner may have flagged them as "inappropriate." I read French fluently, and they're not vindictive reviews - just dissatisfied. Similarly, I'm giving honest feedback because I genuinely want the neighborhood to have a shop people can be happy with. I would have given this review 2 stars (at road speeds, particularly while group-riding, bike chains and tires are a matter of safety), but am hoping that 3 stars will give my feedback a better chance of survival. To the owner: I bear you no ill will and hope that this review will stay up and be the beginning of some changes to make customers happier. Good luck in your endeavors.
