This festival made me sad. But, food festivals should be fun, so why you ask? Well, being a vegetarian, I was ecstatic that there was a festival for us and to bring awareness to vegetarianism/veganism. I mean with the Bacon Fest going on right now, I was excited to leave you Oinks behind and go celebrate with some Veg Heads! But, there were some serious issues that I hope get turned around for next year's Veg Fest!
GOOD VEG: Let's start with the good stuff before hitting the negative stuff.
*First, the entry fee was only $3, which is a pretty great deal if you ask me.
*Tons of people showed up! I was happy to see that there was so much interest.
*We are able to show people that veg food can be good and isn't so weird after all!
*They did have alcohol, well beer that is. I mean, what is a festival if there isn't a little booze?
*There were some tastings (though rare to find). The vegan nachos knocked my socks off! I'm sure non-veg types wouldn't have known that it was a fake cheese flowing over those chips!
BAD VEG: Now I've got to go over the stuff that was just disappointing.
*They say, "Location, location, location!" Did these veg people not get the memo? I mean, it was located in a somewhat ghetto neighborhood. Parking was tough because this event was popular, so we had to park far and walk through a ghetto neighborhood. I did not feel safe and frankly, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I even placed my engagement ring in my pocket to one, remove the bling bling, and two to protect it in case I got mugged. I mean, take my purse, but please don't take my engagement ring!
*Too small of a venue (held at the Fusion International Arts Center) for the amount of people attending! Word was out and the veg people came in herds! I did feel like a cow kind of moving along in the herd, barely able to move far. Moooooo!
*Not enough food! Plum Café ran out of food after I stood in line for 10 minutes! Yeah, I wasn't very happy. Plus, they only had 3 restaurants representing food (Plum, Green Boheme, and Mama Kim's Eats). I have eaten my way through Sacramento and I know there are more places that could have participated, and not necessarily just veg only places. For the amount of people there, the food representation was weak.
*No wine! If there's beer, why can't there be wine? I personally think these things are more fun with a little wine. Plus, no wine just caused me to whine more!
5th VEG FEST: I definitely plan to return next year to support the Veg, but I'm hoping there's some improvement. There's potential to make this event better!
[Note - I struggled with the star-rating on this one. I went between 2 and 3 stars and essentially it was a 2.5 star event. But, I'm feeling kind right now and rounded up!] read more
