Vee Vee was good. The ambiance is wonderful and it was a great place to go for date night. I loved the menu and all the fresh ingredients on it. However, when it came to flavoring, I felt most of the dishes fell flat. We had stuffed zucchini blossoms for an appetizer and the potato-crusted fish with clams and the scallop dish. While everything was well-cooked (the scallops were perfect), it was all a little bland. That being said, it's a cute place to go and a welcoming/neighborhoody vibe. Not sure I'll rush back but wouldn't argue if a group was heading there. read more

Love the veggie frittata (and the fact that it comes with potatoes, salad, AND a biscuit!), and they make great coffee. And this is a great option for a nice date night. Vee Vee is a great little neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain that offers some delicious fare in a pleasant, comfortable environment. Walking in for a 6:45 dinner on a Thurs. evening (no reservation), I was a little surprised to find it fairly quiet and empty. I was equally surprised when the place started filling up quickly afterwards so that practically all tables were occupied. Even with a packed room, the noise wasn't overwhelming. The restaurant is warmly decorated and feels larger than it actually is. I ordered the Sangria w/ Lime & Ginger on draft (just OK), the Bibb Lettuce salad with Poached Farm Egg w/ Crispy Onions (a bit basic but quite good with great ingredients), and the Potato Gorditas (a delicious vegan option). My GF ordered the Manchego Potato Croquettes and a main course of Gnocchi in a Beef Ragu (both of which were quite tasty). The service was polite, helpful and efficient. Our apps were delivered very quickly. I wish the menu would have a few more items but for a restaurant this size it's fine. We eat at Vee Vee on and off throughout the year. I absolutely love how their menu reflects the changing seasons. The freshness of their ingredients as well as the simple but tasty preparations really work for me. I had a simple bib salad...super fresh lettuce, with a soft poached egg, roasted beets and crispy little fried onion bits on top Yum...all the pleasure centers were getting activated! My mouth and brain were reporting back and forth to each other...leafy...soft...a little salty...crispy/crunchy...sweet (from the beets)...and good for me! For dinner I ordered the scallops...perfectly seared...perfectly fresh and nicely enhanced with roasted vegetables and served with a white puree (parsnip?). The sweet subtle flavor of the scallop was not upstaged by the other elements of the dish. Thanks Mr. Chef guy in the kitchen for getting that just right. No dessert this time around but there are always a few good choices. There's a Heath bar butterscotch pudding that sounds sickly sweet but is really delicious. Sweet yes but not a "coat your whole mouth with sugar" sweet, good to share with another person. Each of you gets a few tasty spoons full of creamy, buttery pudding and done. I never leave Vee Vee feeling hungry or grossly weighed down by heavy sauces or ridiculously large portions. They serve up a delicious, well balanced, fresh, healthy meal. The pricing is reasonable, the service is friendly and the owners, a very nice and obviously hard working couple are very hands-on. If I could give this place 4 1/2 stars I would. read more

A few things about this place: Love, love, love the environment. I was totally down with the pink walls. Not many selections on menu. I had the mushroom turnovers- wasn't overly impressed, but finished my plate. I came here with friends on my birthday and the dessert was delicious! However, the waiter was a little abrasive. He sorta complained about us being his last customers. He actually made me feel sorta uncomfortable. I couldn't really tell if he was joking or if he was serious... I've eaten here twice now. The first time, I thought the food was very good. This weekend, the food was really excellent. I had the panko-dijon crusted pollack, which was to *die* for--it melted in my mouth. My friend got the sirloin, which was also super, and the appetizer we shared was also delicious. The service is great--everyone's very friendly--and I love the atmosphere--feels cozy and warm. They save the majority of their two-person tables for walk-ins, so you can choose to come here on the spur of the moment. It's not cheap, but it's definitely a steal for the quality of the food--much cheaper than restaurants that serve this quality food in more expensive parts of Boston. Cozy spot with a trendy menu featuring fantastic food with an excessive list of ingredients they use to justify the price. There are only a few selections on the menu, but all of them are quite good. I got the pollock which was good but not amazing, but my friends had the other entrees and they were wonderful. "Judge not, lest ye be judged." The bf has been trying to get me to come here literally since the place opened. I don't know why I resisted for so long. Perhaps I felt that the space was still haunted by the bland ghosts of the former tea house. Maybe it was the lukewarm reception this place got when it opened. Whenever the bf suggested we venture in, I'd usually respond with a disinterested "eh" or make a face like I had just smelled rotten eggs. I finally caved into the bf one freezing Saturday night. It had been one of those weeks at work where you feel completely inept in your profession. So, I probably went just so I could get a self-esteem boosting "I told you so" in. We ended up both having an excellent meal so I never got to bask in that smug moment of self-righteousness I needed. However, the food was great; fresh, simple and classy. The seafood cakes appetizer is wonderful. I had fish and the bf had scallops and both were delicious and wonderfully flavored. This place has a few, well-done things on the menu and that's what good restaurants do. I regret the months I missed out on this place and will be paying my penance and coming back. read more

I've seen the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum and the Great Pyramid of Giza. And now that I've had Vee Vee's take-out chicken parm, if I were to drop dead tomorrow I could say that I lived a fulfilled life. I put in my takeout order at 10AM, scheduled to pick it up at 7PM, and then, quarantine style, sat and stared at the clock for nine hours, anticipating my favorite food from my favorite restaurant. It didn't disappoint! What usually defines a chicken parm is how many pounds it is and how thickly slathered on the sauce and cheese is. Turns out, though, that a chicken parm can also be a refined gourmet sandwich. Vee Vee killed it. Great chicken and sauce, fresh mozzarella, soft tasty roll. Perfection. That plus a selection of extra super great beer-snob-worthy four packs to choose from made the experience border on the supernatural. My only regret is knowing that the rest of my life will be sad and meaningless when compared to last night's epic beer and chicken parm experience. Went to Vee Vee's for the first time a couple of nights ago. The wait was about 30 minutes, but it was a nice evening so we sat on a bench outside of the restaurant until our table was ready. It's a cozy space that is currently decorated with art from the Pretty Things Brewery. They're apparently hosting "The Art of Pretty Things" this month, and will be having a closing closing party on Saturday, May 8th. I think we'll be heading back for this event! The food was fantastic. Although the menu was concise, I was a bit intimidated by the complicated descriptions of each dish. After trying a few of them, however, I now firmly believe that no matter what you choose from them menu it will be delicious. We started with two apps - shrimp and scallop cakes with aioli ($8), the house-cured gravlax ($9), and some sweet potato fries. The gravlax (salmon for all who aren't familiar with it... personally, I had no idea until my friend explained) was wonderful- finely sliced and served with boiled egg and beets. I also really liked the cakes (and the sauce that came with them), though my fellow diners thought the batter was not great. For mains, the three of us ordered the Vee Vee fish stew ($20), the pork shank ($21), and the crusted pollock ($20). The stew and pollock were extremely tasty, and the pork shank was huge! (We joked about bringing the bone home for the dog to chew on- that is, if we had a dog). The medley of flavors was most mentionable about the pollock, and the stew was unexpectedly Spanish-like in flavoring (kind of like what you might get if you ordered a fish tapas with a tomato-based sauce, but much bigger). Although the pork was giant, the flavor was a lot of the same. Still, nothing serious to complain about. Overall, great experience and yummy food- will return. read more

So I've never been a fan of Bean Town. Sorry to all the Bostonians who are reading this, the city just isn't my cup of tea. But I'm marrying a wonderful woman from Boston, and so I have inevitably spent more time there as of late than I care to spend. And what I've discovered is what many people already know- Jamaica Plain is a pretty awesome neighborhood with a great vibe! Vee Vee might now be my favorite restaurant. It's small, but with a large beer and wine menu. The wine was good, the draft beer selection was a lot of fun. I had the Spanish Croquettes to start and man, what a way to start. It had this great mix of flavors that really made me think I was back in Madrid for a hot second. But what blew me away was the lamb tenderloin with peas and mint. I'm a big lamb fan because when it's done right, it's amazing. This was not only flavored amazingly but cooked perfectly. So next time you're in the neighborhood, check this little neighborhood joint out! read more

I'm a huge fan of these cute places opening outside the city, and I was particularly excited for a vegetaian/pescetarian place. We went last year when it first opened. Service was very polite, and the owners were out greeting everyone. When there was an extended delay in the food, the owner personally came out and apologized and gave us 4 free desserts! Dishes are simple and portions are decent. Prices are moderate and fitting for JP. It's nice to have another option in JP besides 10 tables and Zons. There are some pretty creative vegetarian options that go beyond pastas and risotto, and the fish preparations are more unique, featuring local produce and novel combinations of flavors. Most of all, I was impressed by the service and the owners' genuine concern for the dining experience. That's something so crucial for a new restaurant, and I feel like so much of it is lost with all these new Boston places opened up by impersonal restaurant groups. I love the concept of VeeVee and the seasonally changing menu. I'd definitely recommend it for any vegetarians, pescetarians, or just healthy eaters. read more

Mmm...Vee Vee. Went here on a Wednesday night with some friends who insisted we make a reservation. This was a good idea as the place was small and all tables were full by the end of the night. The waitstaff was super friendly and great at offering suggestions on the menu. Since I'm lactose intolerant my waitress was great at telling me my options and and I was delighted to see that this restaurant is geared towards pescatarians (fish eaters). To avoid dairy I ordered a vegetable curry dish and a salad. The wine that the waitress suggested was amazing. Same goes for the beer that was suggested for my date's dish. One of the things that Vee Vee has going for it is it's top quality beers/wines that accompany it's dishes. While my experience at Vee Vee was fantastic, my date felt like his seafood was sub-par. Both his appetizer and main course included shrimp that seems a little over cooked. I'd go back to Vee Vee if I found myself in the JP neighborhood again. If not for food, then definitely for drinks! read more

This place started in a one-star hole, but eventually clawed its way upward. When we arrived, we were told to expect a 20-minute wait. We weren't seated until over an hour after that. The owner showed some class and comped our wine, so at least she was genuinely sorry. Service improved significantly once we were seated. The entrees are all creative, perhaps a bit too much so. This place suffers from what I call the "one ingredient too many" syndrome. You read the description of the food and think "that sounds good" until you get to that one ingredient that throws off the entire concept. I give them credit for ambition, even if it doesn't always execute as well as I'd want. The scallop cakes everyone keeps raving about are worthy of all the hype. Order and enjoy! read more

Unfortunately, I've only visited a few times, but service has always been friendly and prompt . . .Also, you gotta show some love for any place that offers dollar oyster night. Five years later - still love this place as much as the first day we tried it! So many restaurants go downhill. Not Vee Vee's! They have perfected the art of delicious, fresh food in a friendly neighborhood restaurant at a very good price point. We bring guests here all the time, and there is always something that looks very appealing to each person. They always have amazing vegetarian and vegan option or two, some fish or scallops, a chicken dish and something featuring another meat (beef or pork etc.) There aren't many restaurants that go out of their way to serve inventive vegetarian meals along with meat dishes, and Vee Vee's is our go-to restaurant for this reason. Their draught beers are usually local (or from Maine) and well chosen for the season. They always have a number of nice wines by the bottle or glass, and I appreciate the well-curated choices. Definitely get a dessert or two. They are nicely balanced without being overly sweet. If the butterscotch pot de creme is on the menu, get it! It's a delicious heath-bar crunch on top of an amazing pudding. I'm not even a fan of most butterscotch or caramel things but this is out of this world :-) They also have a lovely brunch on the weekends. All in all - Vee Vee we love you! read more

I've had two dining experiences here - the first time dinner, second, brunch. Dinner was absolutely fantastic - I went with a bunch of friends and got treated incredibly well by the waitstaff, despite having two members of our party get lost en route. Our waiter ended up giving them directions over my phone. All the dishes we ordered were delicious, creative, and well-received (even by our staunch meat lovers!). My vegetarian friends had a ball being able to choose between menu items, instead of resigning themselves to pasta primavera, or eggplant parmesan. Overall, it was a perfect restaurant experience. I often end up paying more, for far less enjoyment and quality, out to eat here in Boston. Brunch wasn't as spectacular. Again, the service was wonderful. I will qualify that by saying I haven't personally liked the waiters and waitresses I've had there, but they have done their best to be accommodating and timely. And I think that deserves a lot of credit. I created my own brunch dish out of sides, and the chefs whipped it up into a gourmet meal with a gourmet presentation. I've done similar things at other restaurants, and received far more flak from the waitstaff and obvious disdain from the chef when the plate arrived. My friend's meal, however, was bordering on bad. It was the special for that day's brunch, and it looked and tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for an hour. It was everything to hate about a frittata; dry, flavorless, and somewhat oily. My meal was fresh, perfectly cooked, and a great mix of flavors and textures, while his looked like it came from Denny's. I have faith in Vee Vee's; that it was just a long day, or they were overworked, or they were running out of the special, so they served up every last overcooked bit. It seems like new restaurant kinks, and I look forward to going back and dining again! read more

We tried this place on Saturday night on a whim. I feel we were lucky to get a table. It is a very small restaurant but the staff seemed very attentive. The wine list had some very nice choices but we stuck with beer. They had four New England micro brews on draft and had a paddle sampler to try them all. All were good selections. We tried the rib appetizer. These were some of the best ribs either of us had ever had. They came with a sweet chili slaw that had just the right amount of hot and sweet. It was like crack. I could eat it with all meals. The oysters were good and fresh but the yuzu granita was a little lost on me. The chicken and gnocchi was good and had a decent all around flavor. I had the steak entree that was on special. The steak was well seasoned and well cooked nicely but was sliced wrong and therefore a tad bit chewy. The side was crispy potatoes with hollandaise, bacon, jalepano, fried egg and scallions. Te side was delicious if not at all good for me. For dessert, the donut cake was as described. It was good but a little sweet for my liking. My dining partner loved it though. The only real hiccup was that it took almost 1/2 hour after we ordered to actually receive any food. Lovely neighborhood restaurant with attentive staff, elevated food, and friendly locals. The menu was limited but with enough choices for all, from carnivores to gluten-free vegans. Especially relished the crispy shiitake mushroom appetizer -- our waiter's suggestion when we asked -- and the sides (which change seasonally) that accompanied my main course (the fried chicken special) comprised delicious comfort food: creamed corn and German potato salad. The vinegar kick of the potatoes perfectly complemented the crispy-skinned chicken and the sweet tang of the fresh corn kernals. Our party was a little high-maintenance, due to needing space to maneuver one's scooter. Our waiter took charge, and the hostess and he re-seated the four of us at a table with easier access. A bottle of Prosecco was reasonably priced and made our birthday party even more festive! Those who chose dessert gave 5-star reviews to the coconut and s'mores cakes. read more

I've gone here a few more times since my last review. It is kind of pricey, but the food quality is really good. If I were to give them some advice, I'd recommend one or two more dinner options a night, or at least one more that isn't seafood. I like it, but people I've gone with have been kind of perplexed about what to order. The staff here is nice, and seems to remember people who have been there more than once. They also have a really good wine and microbrew selection. I brought my family here, and they thought it was really pretentious when they walked in. Fantastic, intimate venue with unique art and wall garden. The menu is small but mighty with excellent options for all palates, including vegetarian and vegan eaters. Wednesday night's being a $26 three course vegan prix fixe that does not disappoint. The bites and appetizers are fantastic and perfectly portioned. The Castelvetrano olives & Bibb lettuce with poached farm egg are two of my favorites on the menu. If you aren't offered bread, don't be afraid to ask. The entrees are very good sized, so I would recommend taking some home to try one of their fantastic desserts. They once had a homemade 'Whatchamacallit' bar that I still drool after. The drink menu includes a solid beer list, wines by the bottle & glass, & funky alternative beverages (alcoholic & non). Overall, this is one of my favorite places with great service, lots of farm-to-table foods, & great local finds. Head in ASAP! read more

We went for the Tuesday night fried chicken special. I heard that it gets packed and the special goes fast, so my wife and I went straight after work and met there. Actually, she went home to shower first then walked to this place up the street from our house. She called in to VeeVee on her way from work and they said that all reservations were booked. I figured since I was getting there first that I would just walk in and see if they would seat me. Sure enough they did! They opened at 5:30pm and I got there at 5:40pm, and I was one of two people waiting for a partner. When my wife arrived we were treated with good wine and a pretty tasty entree. The chicken special was good with the cheese biscuit and delicious corn on a cob. Typical price for what you would get in JP. We are low sodium folks, so naturally the salt on the chicken stood out for us, but I'm pretty sure that for any normal individual it would be perfectly fine. If I would recommend anything, it would be for it to included a much hardier vegetable on the side. To be fair, there was a small salad, but it was really small, so we felt it could have been bolstered with more greenery. Other than that, I'd recommend for others to at least try the special once, since I don't know if you will get this anywhere else on this side of town. read more

We've made reservations for date night, we've walked in during a nor'easter, we've brunched, we've Valentine's Dayed, and I think we New Yeared and if we haven't, we will. We have fallen in love with every entree. My wife in particular loves the fish entree and loves that it rotates with different preparations and different sides. The appetizers and bites are very addicting. We regularly order the shitake mushrooms and we also enjoy the salad; most come with a very light vinaigrette that complements the greens rather than drowning them. The wine and beer list is great. Not encyclopedic, but well selected and well maintained. The tap is constantly rotating with a list of what's on above the bar. The desserts are something else. We are obsessed with the butterscotch pudding. The special occasion desert trays are also something we look forward to when we're able to come for Valentine's Day. Brunch is not only the best on Centre street but it's also very reasonably priced. The breakfast sandwich and the pork schnitzel which is a perpetual special are both big hits. My wife also loves the home fries; the texture of the potatoes is just right. I hope it comes back after summer break. And finally, the service is wonderful. We're always been really happy walking home from Vee Vee. read more

I just moved to JP, and was looking for some Sunday brunch with my roommate. So we wandered down Centre St. (passed the wicked long line at the Centre St. Cafe) and ended up at Vee Vee. As soon as we stepped inside, I loved the feel and atmosphere of the place. We also scored the spacious window booth so the people-watching was also spectacular. I definitely appreciate the focus on fresh and local greens and seafood. The coffee was amazing, and my girlfriend's lobster sausage was interestingly delicious. However, I was less than enthralled with my sweet potato hash and seared greens (downright yucky). I probably would not come back for brunch, until maybe they change up the menu (and I have to admit I love bacon) but am excited to check it out for dinner. An unusually excellent place. I've been here 3 times. Always they have been out of stuff that I was just about to order or they've come back saying 'sorryyyyy but we're out of x" BUT no fear...they always come up smelling of roses with whatever else is on the menu. First off, a lovely little bar area with a really nice bartender. The croquettes at the bar are top shelf. Really lovely. I've had the roasted giannone chicken there (second choice) but just fantastic. Nice parsnip kick, herbal butter but not overly buttered. Ah yes, this is the good life.
