Vapiano has two locations in Rotterdam, their location here at Rotterdam Plaza, opposite Rotterdam Centraal Station is very large, it's fairly casual with QR code ordering, and is open from 11 am to 11 pm.
I visited on a busy Friday evening, so they were almost full, staff were not actively cleaning tables as guests were leaving which was frustrating, as the few tables that were open were unclean, even after asking a staff member to wipe down a table, this was not acted upon. There was a long wait for food which was expected due to how busy it was, there were no guidelines or wait time advised/published.
Gluten-free options include pizza and pasta, although you must order them at the counter, as for some reason gluten-free pizza/pasta does not appear on their app - I found this strange as I dined at other Vapiano locations in the Netherlands and did not have this problem!
Prices are reasonable for food, and a little expensive for drinks, and while I do like how the kitchen is open, so you can see the chefs preparing your food, I can't help but miss the old Vapiano style, where you could walk up to the counter, and order your food with the chef who prepares it right in front of you.
Despite making them aware I was gluten-free, the staff member who took my order at the counter offered me bread (containing gluten) to go with the food, the manager who was standing next to the man who took my order quickly corrected him and confirmed the bread wouldn't be gluten-free... only for them to bring the bread out anyway with my food. This made me worried about the cross-contamination aspect, and if the pasta wouldn't have tasted so bad, I would have thought they gave me gluten-containing pasta by mistake.
I was disappointed with the quality of the pasta and the meat, the sauce was fine and the portion size was generous, but it was super disappointing overall.
I felt concerned dining here with allergies, and it wasn't worth it in the end with food quality, sure ordering in person is a sound idea to ensure they take the allergy seriously, but I felt less confident when ordering in person than actually using the app. 1* read more
