When you walk into a shop there is an implicit assumption that they want to sell you some of their products. Not so with Vanden Borre at Drogenbos.
I went on a Saturday afternoon to buy an oven. I first asked at the desk if I could have the oven I had picked out but the lady told me I'd have to talk to one of the roving sales assistants.
OK I thought, I stood in the shop for 20 minutes but nobody came near me. There were plenty of staff but nobody came near me. Many were sitting with customers engaged in what appeared to be lengthy paperwork exercises, others were rushing around looking busy but really doing nothing at all.
Finally two female staff members arrived from what looked like a tea break and I approached one and asked her to sell me a specific oven and she refused saying only male staff could sell ovens. I repeated that I had already picked out and I just needed to pay but she persisted in refusing to help me.
I left at that point.
This store takes the biscuit even by Belgian standards.
UPDATE: I ordered the item on their website and it couldn't have been more efficient. They came when they said they would and installed my new oven and took away the old one. read more
