First let me say that the Van Der Valk hotel chain is very like a Dutch version of the American Marriott hotel chain. Everyone I know who has stayed at one of their hotels has found their stay exceeded their expectations, as had I. Until this stay at their hotel in Heerlen. Frankly I was shocked at how dirty and run down the hotel was. They we're adding on to part of the hotel, but they seriously need to spend some money fixing up the part that already is built. The halls had worn spots on the floors and carpets and gashes from guests luggage. The floors had small bits of paper, dirt, leaves and other debris on them. I was on a room on the 100 level which was the very bottom floor, two floors down from the main floor. The hotel is on a hill so I had a tiny walk out patio that led to a park area and walking trail. There were numerous cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and in the corners of the room. There was no carpet in the room. It had a faux wood floor. It didn't seem like the floor had a lot of dirt but it had many, many black marks and stains. It looked like the floor just needed a good scrubbing to bring it up to guest standards. The bathroom had hair in the tub and a big mat stuck to the floor next to the tub. At first I thought it was an old dead spider but when I looked closer saw it was a hair mat, yuck! The shower floor was still drying when I arrived, so I can't say if it had been cleaned at all. This was too weird for a Dutch hotel. My experience with the Dutch makes me consider them very clean and fastidious. This was so the opposite! The staff was professional but not welcoming. The breakfast in the hotel restaurant was good and a decent price, though the coffee beans they used made very bitter coffee, espresso and cappuccino, which was also a surprise. Most coffee in Europe is exceptional. This is the first time I've ever had bad coffee in Europe! First time this occurred at a Van Der Valk hotel too! The location of the hotel is convenient and very close to the Kasteel and downtown Heerlen. I'm willing to give them another try, but won't go back if it duplicates this stay. read more
