As soon as you walk in you are greeted and asked if you need any help with what you are looking for. Their selection is literally everything, from TCG cards to boards games to large table top game and everything you need to get started playing. Value is usually right as MSRP or slightly lower. But the prices are some of the best in the area. 10/10 will return again. read more

As a major fan of Tabletop RPGs and one developing a greater interest in miniatures and the potential for creating a modular terrain system for D&D, I've been coming to Valhalla's Gate ever since the beginning of my freshman year in college. Whether it be for the artist's toolkits or the actual Tabletop Games, this store has a shiny coat of paint for what they're actually worth on the inside. Starting with their offerings, it's highly unorganized and quite overpriced, given the prices online. I like to support local businesses, but I can't recommend a 20-40 dollar overcharge for most of the items in the shop. Even then, I've seen plenty of people overlook items that they're interested in because it's tucked away behind other boxes, or the box is simply turned around where the name isn't visible. Why make it like this? It's the same with the paints and terrain sculpting offerings, pricey and unorganized. Even given the prices and organization, I might still give them a 4 because of the environment and setting, but my last visit has left me with a sour taste. I usually bring a mask when I'm planning to arrive (since masks have been mandated on the site for almost 2 years at this point) but they always offer masks and I make sure to grab one when I arrive. I have never had a single issue with the employees before, they're always kind and helpful as far as I know. However, I visited their tabletop room to just see the environment and learn about it, since I was with an interested friend who happens to DM. A man (who I presume the owner to be) was working on a table, and I gave compliments and was making small talk just learning about everything. At this moment, I had lowered my mask about half an inch (still attached) to let out some fog that had built up around my glasses and to get a breath or two in maybe 10-12 feet away, during which the man seemingly lashed out at me that 'masks are required' in a stern tone. This made me uncomfortable and feel disrespected as if I haven't made an effort before and had done business in the environment. I've always tried to maintain care for others, so this interaction left me worse for wear, and I can't imagine myself coming back again. This establishment prides itself on its 'accepting' views, but I haven't felt more targeted for such a minimal thing, and I can't imagine I'm the only one who may have had a bad experience in such away. If you read some of the hundred-odd reviews on Google, there are plenty who say they feel uncomfortable. Due to this recent experience and accounting for the lack of structure and fair prices, I simply can't recommend going to Valhalla's Gate in 2021. I would have loved to see it when it was handled better, it seems as if the times have made it worse for wear. It feels like it's aiming for a target audience of 30-50-year-old men, instead of aiming for the millions of young adults who are looking for things beyond what is offered. I hate feeling like an outcast and plenty of others feel the same. It's a lack of understanding and the attempt to look like a 'fight for change' instead of making genuine changes that benefit people. Sad to see. read more

Awesome shop with a safety conscious approach to customer support. Huge selection and very helpful

I've visited maybe 20 board games stores in North America. This is, without a doubt, the best, and my favorite, among all of them. First, they have an extensive selection. About half the store is dedicated to the D&D/Warhammer/Magic-type collection-heavy, RPG-style, or miniatures. The other half is dedicated to Euro-style gaming (with a little American party gaming here and there). It's a spacious layout that's very conducive to browsing. It's easy to look around and browse. Second, the staff has always been helpful. Some of them have kids and tell us their preferred kid-friendly games. They always have a couple of selections based upon preferences. We haven't been steered wrong by their advice yet, and that's something. Third, they have a small rewards program, where they keep your phone number on file, and after a certain amount of purchases you get a gift certificate. Small, sure, but it's great for loyalty. Fourth, the selection is phenomenal. They hit the right balance on everything. They don't overwhelm you with Dominion variants or Killer Bunnies add-ons. There's a little of everything for everyone. If you want Munchkin or a Catan, you can get it. If you want a party game, you can get it. If you want some of the more obscure games from Z-Man or Rio Grande, they often have it. This is, as mentioned, my favorite board game store in North America. I haven't visited them all. But if you're in central Missouri, try them. read more

This place IS the place to go for games in Columbia. Huge selection, seems like they have a lot of structured game nights/tournaments etc... My only complaint: elitist staff and regulars. If you don't fit their idea of what a tabletop or rpg gamer looks like, it's not unlikely that you'll get the feeling that they're scoffing at you. Staff aren't rude or mean, but I know multiple people who have felt judging eyes and a little condescension based on how they were dressed, groomed, or what they're buying. read more

Best Gamer store in Missouri. Family-friendly, excellent staff, lots of space. Tables with terrain for FOW, Dystopian Wars, 40K, Warhammer, Warmachine, Hordes, etc. Board game nights for casual play. Always something happening with MTG and Pathfinder. Not unusual to see 40+ players of all descriptions and ages there on most evenings. Highly recommend.
