We all know the magazines, 944 and Java, that show us all the beautiful people at all the hottest spots and be-scene events that we missed. And we've all picked up a magazine, like LivingEtc or Dwell, that is trying to sell us the hippest modern home furnishings for that architecturally significant flat we'll never own. You may be able to think of one that covers only our local art, artists, business owners, and developers, but I can't. But there seems to be only one that brings you all of that in one spot. Kontakt is filled with architectural and interior design ideas, personal fashion, news on upcoming and past events, They cover new business developments and what to look forward to in your urban life. They bring together everything that is exciting about the Valley, with insight to who is making it happen, what else they are making happen and generally before any of it has happened. It is a really good magazine and definitely worth subscribing to and supporting. I think it was once said that "Weight+Shinny=Street Cred!" and I think that holds true in this case.

Ah, the neighborhood newspaper. What an institution! Moving into an area where I'd never even…read moredriven through many nearby major streets before signing on the dotted line, it was like manna from heaven to find this out on my porch one day. Heaven I tell you. Restaurants, churches, doctors and lots of articles about schools, new development and other fun stuff in the area. Mind you - take out the ads and it's only about a page and a half, maybe 2 pages long, but the ads can be just as informative if you're new in the area. And it's free to residents! That is the very best part! I love using their online site to search for things in the area. It's great if you remember they did a review on something or look back on when they said you should trim back the trees to avoid frost or whatever. For a free local news publication, they are pretty well rounded. If you're interested in learning more about the area, it's definitely a site to check out.

They (like a lot of publications) are entirely blinded by the bottom line (rather than readership), which is why you'll NEVER see them be even a little critical of ANY local business no matter how crappy they are. Everything in this rag is GREAT and GROOVY and COOL. All style. Zero credibility.

Depends on the issue, the coverage and how many times I have to see the same DJs, artists, advertisers and the same lanky disheveled stoic Downtowners profiled. Other times I have found a perfect new gallery to fall in love with or read about the newest wine bar opening up the street. Love it or not it this free monthly rag does a better job of covering Central Phoenix, Tempe and other hipster pockets than -- oh wait, zero, zilch, zippo. Yes, no one else is covering it.
