I started coming to Dr. Liu right after he opened Utopia Optometry 5 years ago. I wore glasses 19 hours a day and hated them. He suggested LASIK surgery. I told him I was told by my previous optometrist I wasn't a candidate and he said not true. Dr. Liu worked at Saddleback Eye Center in Laguna Hills before he went into practice for himself. He set me up with an appointment there and a month later I had my surgery with Dr. Manger. I was told, by Dr. Manger, after my LASIK I would need some reading glasses (minimal prescription). I go to Dr. Liu every year for my eye exam and 5 years later I have 20/20 vision. I have never needed reading glasses after my surgery. Went in to get some new glasses since my backup glasses broke (head shot to the face with a soccer ball, yea.. seriously). When I first walked in I was greeted by all the ladies at the front desk, very welcoming. When it was time for getting my eyes checked with the phoropter (the machine with the series of lenses put in front of your eyes) the female eye doctor greeted me (sorry don't remember the name). The experience of going through that wasn't too memorable. Nice enough lady. However, I would suggest maybe giving positive affirmations (use words such as "good, perfect, great") when going through the lenses, instead of "hmm" and "huh" since that might give off as if we, the patients, are doing something wrong . When I proceeded to the front to look for frames I was greeted and assisted by Meena. She was very helpful throughout the whole process. At first, it wasn't looking good in finding frames I liked even with their vast selection. I can be very picky when it comes to choosing the right frames for my face. Right when I was about to lose hope, it seemed like Meena started to pull frames out of nowhere (even and was able to find me PLENTY of frames back to back that I very much liked. So as long as you have patience and let the associates get the feel of what you're looking for, they'll be able to find exactly what you like. So for me, their positive Yelp reviews and hype did live up to the expectations and I was very much satisfied. I'd definitely recommend. UPDATE: Unfortunately, the prescription glasses I got from Utopia did not work out. They say to give your "brain and eyes" up to 2 weeks to get used to the new prescription, which I did, and at first I thought "Hey maybe the blurriness is part of getting used to it". Never got used to it... They DO give a period of time to come back in and get them adjusted, but being that I don't wear my glasses ALL the time I kept telling myself my eyes had to "re-adjust" to the prescription. I should have gone with my gut instinct and just went back in, so in part, that was MY fault. However, I am a long time glasses wearer and I have never had issues when I have had my prescription done elsewhere. In full disclosure, I was NOT seen by Dr. Liu but by Dr. Ng (not absolutely sure by the name, but it WAS a female doctor that saw me). I DO have astigmatism, so I don't know if that makes it more difficult to figure my prescription, but I doubt it since again I have not had issues prior at other optometrists. I have since stopped wearing the glasses all together due to getting consistent headaches and vertigo. The most "convenient" part is that now my insurance won't cover another exam so out of pocket it is! ;) read more

I've been coming to Utopia for my eye care for 2 years now, and I've always had a great experience. This time around, I had my comprehensive eye exam and soft contact lens fitting done by Dr. Ng who was super efficient and thorough. Also, this is def my go-to spot for the cutest frames!! They have such a great selection of designer frames and the girls are so helpful in picking out the perfect ones. My new glasses and contacts were ready for pick up in less than 2 weeks! Being a student, it's difficult for me to make appointments during the week but they were so accommodating and it was easy to make my initial and follow up appointments. After seeing Utopia's reviews and recommendations by friends, I went to Utopia for an overdue eye exam and possibly new glasses. What differentiated them from others, in my opinion, is how they would sit down with me and help me understand my own insurance co-pays and coverage. I ended up coming out with the exam, new glasses with all the fixings, and new lens for my sunglasses all for less than what I paid for 1 pair of basic glasses at anywhere else in the past (I used to go to the usual big box stores: Sears, Lens Crafters, and Costco), because other places simply don't care enough to learn all the different insurance coverages. Another plus is that their in-house lens specialist or whoever you call the person that actually "builds" or fits the lens, is somewhat of a genius. I love wrap around sunglasses but nobody could ever get my lenses right. They all blamed it on the curvature of the frames or my required prescription. I would get headaches and the lens protrudes quite a bit at the far edges. Utopia said they will give it a try, it came back looking great (lens fit is almost same as my regular frames). The best part, I can feel the difference immediately when I put it on. I have had no headaches even after all day wear. A quick word about who I personally dealt with during my visit: The examination done by Dr. Liu. He is professional, the facility is up to date, and the exam was quick but very accurate. They also have the latest technology in eye exams, and their equipments/machines seemed clean and well kept. After at least three years, I decided it was finally time to go find an eye doctor and get my prescription updated. Found this place here on Yelp. Had a bit of time while I was out running errands, so I popped in and made an appointment. It was really easy to get scheduled, and the lady at the desk was very friendly. Had my appointment, and saw that they can get quite busy from time to time. That seems like a good and bad thing. I don't recall when it was, but at some point, a man had walked in and was just standing around waiting. All the staff at the moment was busy with someone/something else, and he ended up leaving without being acknowledged. So that's actually part of why I took off a star, because people did walk by and see him, but for some reason no one acknowledged him with a "we'll be right with you" or anything like that. The doctor was great, and answered all sorts of questions that I had. He was easy and comfortable to talk to. After my exam, I looked at a lot of the frames that they offered. I prefer shorter frames that don't overwhelm my face, and almost everything they had I felt were too big. I was told big, round frames were the trend, but it's just not my style. Learned that they can put nose pads on plastic frames, so I was super excited about that. Being Asian, I have a short bridge, so I've only ever been able to wear metal frames, where the designs and colors tend to be more simple. I found some plastic frames I liked, and ended up getting one for regular glasses and another for sunglasses. The frames I chose were a bit less expensive, so they were covered by my insurance allowance. They told me it would take a bit longer to receive since they were adding nose pads to the regular glasses, and that was fine. The glasses arrived within the time frame they told me. And I absolutely loved the way they looked (both pairs). A bit later, I went back in to see if I could get the nose pads adjusted -- I felt they were sitting a bit too low. Unfortunately, as they were trying to adjust it, the frame cracked. (Thankfully I had the sunglasses in the car, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get home.) They told me later that the frames were back-ordered for 2 months. I was so sad because I really adored the frames. So they helped me find some new frames, and I settled on a more expensive pair that was better quality, and it looked good, but I still can't say I like them more than the first ones I got. So I just had to pay the difference of the frames that my insurance allowance didn't cover. However, they did what they could to make things right and get me new glasses. So I do really appreciate their customer service. read more

Really, really good customer service. I came almost a year ago and had an eye exam done, followed by ordering a years worth of contact lenses and also getting new glasses. Never had an optometrist suggest better contact lenses suited for my eye shape, and my glasses are so light, comfortable, and beautiful! I needed to get a refill on my contact lenses. I currently live in Santa Barbara so it's a bit of a drive for me to go and get it done in the office, so I called and since my prescription had not expired yet, they ordered my contacts for me over the phone. Found Utopia Optometry through my insurance and I have to say what a find. I was about an hr late for my eye exam so I was not expecting the red carpet treatment but I was wrong. Everyone greeted me when I walked in and they were understanding for me being late. Dr Liu was able to see me and I did not have to wait too long. I am really happy with the services I received from Dr. Ng and Uptopia. I was a patient here before and loved them but made the mistake of going to Costco for my last optometrist visit. I am so glad I came back to Utopia. The doctors here are very knowledgable and patient, and the staff is very friendly. Maddie helped me specifically and really took the time to help me decide on the glasses I liked. My prescription is dead on now, and I love the new Transitions I ordered. The new wide lens test really showed what is going on behind my eyes and (no pun intended) opened my eyes about the different issues I was having. So excited to have found Dr. Liu who meet my unique contact lens situation. I have a brown and hazel eye; so, for years I used a prescription brown contact lens on the hazel eye so both eyes appeared brown. I then met Dr. Liu who introduced me to a new prescription hazel contact lens. I use the hazel lens over the brown eye, so I now have hazel eyes. I love it. I also use glasses for work while since I spend hours on the computer working remote from home, so I purchased the computer glare protection for my glasses and it has helped tremendously with eye fatigue.
