Port of Skagway - Cute towel in one of the shops. Support local businesses or it'll be from China. Just look at the tags.

Port of Skagway

When there are those ports you step off of from a cruise ship that blow your mind... yes that is…read morehere. EXPERIENCE: Now when I say blow your mind, I mean with beauty. This port at the end of April is surrounded by snow capped mountains, pine tree covered hills, and a very small, but adorable town. Skagway was founded around 1987 as a Gold Rush boomtown, becoming the first incorporated city in Alaska on June 28, 1900. It is over 125 years old. The history here is quite remarkable. Do not sleep on the tours. The White Pass Scenic Railroad Tour is the most popular tour, but let me give you a budget friendly tip. If you take the shuttle bus tour, it's just $50. It runs parallel up the same path the train takes. On this tour you get to stop and get out of the shuttle at about 5 spots and take pictures. It takes you all the way up to the Canadian Border. I truly enjoyed this part of Skagway and recommend it to anyone. The town also deserves to be explored. It's small and quaint, with a lot of touristy shops, but try to go into the local businesses that have been there a long time. Most of the shops with the touristy items sell things that are made in China. So you are not getting anything genuinely from Alaska. It's still fun to browse! If you are traveling here at the end of April when the season begins, dress in a thousand layers. It's very windy and icy cold. OVERALL: I would definitely recommend this beautiful little town to anyone who likes learning about the history of places, because this town has an incredible one. Take the shuttle tour vs the expensive railroad tour if you're trying to save money, and explore the town. It's all walkable.

Easy port to walk around but except for the White Pass Railroad there are limited attractions in…read moretown. But if you like shopping and eating, you're golden. There's a couple of parks and an RV campground. Most folks do excursions that take you out of town. There are now two docks: the first is next to the mountain and landslide and a shorter walk into town. The second is the Ore dock on the far end - a much longer walk into town to town. There's more to the town than the immediate downtown - if you love to read there's a decent library. Thought I had reviewed yet but it's still in ky drafts but will finish now. Theres a distillery about a 7 minute walk near the airport. Apparently that review is still in my drafts, too will finish now. There's a cemetery and a National Park all within walking distance of town. So it's worth going on a little walk and not using the shuttle bus. Only a few places offer anything gluten free.
