I came to the Customs and Border Protection building for my interview for NEXUS, which had to be…read morescheduled in advance. The interview process requires you to meet with someone from both the US and Canada. You set up your interview on the Trusted Traveler Website. Typically 3 slots are available at any time, meaning there will be 6 desks, and you will go to 2 of them (American representative first if you are an American citizen). Everyone there was pleasant and friendly and willing to answer any questions. The entire process goes fairly quickly, and after your 2nd interview, you receive verbal instructions and an information packet, and everything else comes in the mail in 8-10 days. It might not be immediately obvious how to get to the building, since you can't easily see it from I-87, and the access road is actually off US 9. But when you schedule your interview, you receive written directions, and navigation should be able to get you there easily. This process is independent of the border crossing gates, however, getting NEXUS does allow you to use one specific lane for entry.

My review is based on border patrol. It's usually easy and…read morequick going into Canada but do be aware that Easter Weekend is going to be a wait. The border patrol is always friendly and welcoming. Canada has made it easier for travelers to visit the lovely country recently. They don't require COVID tests anymore if you are fully vaccinated. As long as you do your ArriveCAN before hand, you will have an easy time getting in (alongside vaccine card and passport, of course). Canada is probably the easiest country to cross the border, I love it! I just wish they stamped passports.

I can't believe that they actually let me back into the country!…read more As we waiting on line with passports in hand we noticed the cars ahead of us getting searched. Border agents looking in trunks, opening doors, looking in backseats, etc. As we made it up to the gate I was expecting a body cavity search. Handed the agent our passports. He asked how long we were in Canada and why we were there. I said a week, and for a pleasure vacation as I smiled and winked at him. He leaned in and looked into the car at me and my gal, handed us back our passports, and told us to have a good day. That was it. Not even a good frisking. Damn. Honestly NYC to Montreal, and then heading home after a week Montreal to NYC was a breeze. Both ways no problem and only took minutes. Maybe we just picked lucky times to cross the border. Maybe it was my cute face and sexy smile from 'MURRICA to EH?

Canada eh. Oh yeah!! Their small population of roughly 35 million Canadians enjoys a high quality of life. Most living in major metropolitan cities near or around the southern U.S. border. Security at the Canadian/United States borders is strict and very well regulated. They seriously don't want our 325 million disgruntled Americans fleeing into their happy maple leaf haven. Nope. Not at all. My personal adventure through this area for the first time was November 2016. I drove up from New Jersey, where family was having Thanksgiving. I choose route 87 New York Tollway. It was an easy drive, but there were no obvious places for exchanging money. Additional research just yesterday, there is an office in Plattsburgh, New York that can offer Canadian dollar for your U S. monies. There was nothing near this border check point. Nothing indicated near the city of Champlain, the last US city before the border. Things you absolute need: Valid U.S. Passport. Gone are the days of just using our state identification. A patient disposition. This is the busiest Canada//U.S. border crossing and it can back up with tons of cars, especially during holidays. It took me over an hour just to talk to the agents. Once there. Be very polite. Those border patrol agents treat everyone in a hostile manner. First tip: roll down all your windows, turn off your radio, put on an interior light if you are there at night, have your passport handy, put your hands on the steering wheel. Just be prepared. One kinda has to prove your very valid reasons, with proof as to your travels. Again, they don't want roudy Americans pouring into their country. So I was asked very tough and specific questions. Just answer smoothly and thank them. Things you CANNOT bring into Canada. Trust me on this. I now know 1st hand one simple little item they consider illegal. Pepper Spray. Alrighty then. Here is their no go list of items to leave at home: MACE, TEAR GAS, PEPPER SPRAY, BEAR SPRAY, BRASS KNUCKLES, but Oh hey, plastic knuckles are swell. Don't bring: FIRE ARMS, AMMO, OR CANNABIS. Just don't. Your stuff will be confiscated. And depending on what you have in your possession. Criminal charges may apply. Or you can be arrested and detained. Bummer. So just don't. My 5 year old pink pepper spray was taken. No biggie. No record of any nature. But it took an additional hour out of my valuable late Fall sunlight to sightsee. Ughhhhh. And there is not a whole lot of information posted anywhere. I really had to hunt down and search numerous sources to compile this list. It's 2018 people. Tell us what is not allowed. Geesh!! Lastly, but not without mentioning. Declare all plants, food, alcohol, tobacco, and animals. Amounts allowed depend on personal use or business imports. And there is apparently a brouhaha over meat coming into Canada. Like steaks and stuff like that. Okie dokie. There was no cost to cross. Just a lot of patience and time required. Small potatoes once you know what is expected. Happy traveling.
