This is the best vintage shop in Birmingham. It's also the coolest. What have they got? Mod threads of striped blazers, Fred Perry polo shirts and Sherpa jackets. Pretty patterned Hippie-Chic dresses from the late 60s and early 70s. Neat towers of Levi's ranging from as-new to the right side of distressed. A tweed-heavy Country Gent area. Peaky Blinders stuff that'll do as well for fans of 1919 fashions in general as it will for up-market fancy dress. And a whole ton of sports clothes from the 60s to the 90s.
Apart from clothes, there's second-hand records galore. Your reward for browsing through the whole lot might be bagging a very reasonably priced rarity.
Usually owner Frankie is sat behind the counter. On this Saturday though it's a new face on the shop floor. Cheekily, charmingly and with a no-nonsense approach he sorts out a punter with the right fit and shade of jeans.
My friend is torn between two leather coats. One in ultra marine blue, the other in tan. After much, much deliberating she buys both. And as she's paying for them she spots a dress in the office with a heart-shaped flower garland print. Apparently it's destined for the Urban Village Etsy shop. After a call to Frankie the dress is saved from the faff and expense for everyone of going through Etsy. A direct sale equals a much cheaper price.
I have to buy something every time I come in here. Rules is rules. An authentic NFL Orlon/wool blend Washington Redskins jumper it is, then. Not my usual choice of clothing, but its freezing mid-Winter, and I'm feeling like erring on the side of Grunge. And it's only a tenner.
A couple drop in who've ridden their scooters here. The girl leaves with a Vespa patch. A mum and daughter team try on a few dresses. Everyone that comes into the shop interacts with each other. The blokes have a bit of banter and a laugh, the women compliment each other on what they're wearing. There's lots of chatting at the counter. It's a great vibe.
You can't have shopping experiences like this on a website. Nowhere near. And I swear you won't find better value authentic vintage clothes anywhere else off or online. So make a bee-line for Urban Village. read more
