I took my two boys. Both have curly hair but different textures. They knew Exactly how to handle the cuts. Martin took care of my son with very thick hair and looser curls. He worked with scissors on top and clipped the sides but it looked finished and integrated. I find with curly hair sometimes barber's don't know how to make the whole cut work. Omar did an excellent job on my other son with really curly hair. Even cut in the forehead edges with a razor so it looked amazing. John is an extremely experienced, intelligent barber. This is as fine of a barbershop as it gets. And trust me, I've been to over 30 of Jersey's barbershops, and 27 of New York's. I also consistently am updated about the best barbershops in the country and tri-state area. The moment you step into this barbershop, you are greeted right away by a friendly employee/John the owner. John uses a straight razor as if it is an extension of his hand, and it is an instrument that is very dangerous. You want someone as skilled and passionate as John to be holding such a tool to your face. The barbershop is clean, and elegant in design, yet has a very modern feel to it. A positive energy also emanates throughout the presence of the shop. This shop has all you need as a man to really wow a date or your significant other. I went in because I had an emergency valentine's date and I was NOT about to show up to her doorstep with a unibrow. Scraped some cash together, and I was accepted right away. I also got a very sharp and good looking eyebrow slit which I will upload a photo of shortly. I examined the barbershop's utensils and such deftly. They do not use run-of-the-mill products basically every barber uses. Want to know why this is good? It shows the barbers took time to find top-of-the line products, and only the finest for their customers. It shows passion. They enlist the products of Suavecito for example which is my favorite brand for pomade, and my second favorite is Uppercut, a brand you can find at online retailers such as Amazon and ASOS, Suavecito also makes pre-shave oil (Highly recommend to those who wish to do a clean, barber quality shave for themselves.) This is a top-tier barbershop and scotch plains is very lucky to have it. I will be going here as it is quite near me, and gives me a better cut than more expensive competitors, plus more services. Notably The Wolves Den, which charges 30$ for a cut (Although it also is quite nice, but I wish they wouldn't play obnoxious profane music while I'm getting a haircut and a shave). In conclusion, this shop also does classic cuts. My friends grandfather who's over the age of 80 also visits here and gets dapper crew cuts. I'm pretty sure you get a discount if you write a five star review and show it to them in the shop. I never have a pleasant experience here and I've been about 4 times. These guys are real barber snobs. They are nice if you are their friend or a wealthy looking white man but everytime I go no one wants to take me and are kind of rude. Called for my first cut, great no. Worries good cut. I said I come every 3 weeks. I call Tuesday before Thanksgiving for a cut on Friday 10 am, the man who cut my hair first time wasn't available, family in town so Alex will cut my hair. They open at 8 on Fridays I show up a few minutes early. Not open I wait till 10, still not open I try and call, no answering machine. No sign, one less person that will come back. I'm an old guy with a tough beard ... when I moved to Scotch Plains away from my long-time barber I thought I as going to have a problem, but a dude at a local bar steered me to Urban Shave. Wow, was the guy spot on! This place is GREAT. I have used John, Jason, and Brian. All top-notch. I have chosen Brian as my go-to, but would use anyone there. I walk out looking sharp, as good as I can look (I don't give them much to work with in the "handsome" department). Believe me, I am as far from their typical customer as you can get, but they have the skills to adapt. My first time there, I went straight to a social gathering afterwards and (no joke, no exaggeration I promise!) four separate women (and who cares about the men anyway) said "you look ten years younger, great haircut". That sold me on Urban Shave for life. I continue to get those comments when I see out-of-town relatives, etc. YES!! No more expensive than any other shop. And worth every penny, then some. Follow my lead and tip well -- these fine barbers deserve a little extra. BTW, easy parking out back, don't bother looking for a space on Park Ave. And in the same parking lot you have a super place for beer and wine, plus a sushi bar and a pizza place ... it's my one-stop. PS: I have looked at some of the other reviews and I want to add two comments: (1) I have not been offered (and would not accept) any discount for writing a 5-star review; I have no connection to the owners whatsoever, I am just a customer. I needed my beard trimmed badly and after reading the reviews, even though I'm far from "urban" I decided to give them a try. From the get-go Brian was great, nice firm handshake. Steady hand with the razor, and the straight-edge. They gave me a bit more of a "modern" trim than I was necessarily looking for - I'm 49 and the place definitely caters to a younger crowd, but I'm actually really happy with it. it's trim, clean, and even. Finding a good barbershop is very difficult especially in the Fanwood area, but I thankfully found this great spot, and love getting a fresh cut from Alex. Their scheduling process via app is seamless, and the atmosphere is fun. Sports are on, snacks can be purchased, and you can have a conversation without yelling over loud music. The best thing about this spot happened this morning when my 2year old sat in a chair calmly for 20 minutes getting his hair cut by Alex. It was his first cut, and it couldn't have gone better. By far the best shop I've been to for a haircut or shape up! I am always acknowledged by a barber, if not all the barbers when I walk in. This makes a welcoming experience with the addition of making you feel comfortable to be part of future conversations that may go on while at the shop. The barbers also will cut to your pleasure no matter who you go to, just let them know what your looking for. I for one go to Alex and schedule my appointments through the app, which is very useful and time saving for a haircut on a busy schedule. Alex has also helped me choose a barber that would satisfy my style of cut when he is unavailable or out for emergencies. In all, everyone at this shop is very helpful and welcoming no matter how busy it may get. I created a Yelp account for the sole purpose of giving a review for this place. This place is one of the worst establishments I have ever been too for a haircut in my life. They speak poorly about the clients in their chair amongst one another in Spanish thinking as if there's no one else in the room that knows Spanish. Also If I make an appointment at 3, then I should be locked in at 3. I get it sometimes people get backed up and sometime it's they're other clients fault no problem. But there is no respect given when something like that happens. When I come in and have to wait for 2 more people to get there haircut when I already have my appointment at 3 then you need a change in how you run your shit. The owner John cut me once and when he was all done, took the cape off and shook all the hair that was on it, onto my shirt and said nothing after. Didn't brush me off nothing. For that I wish nothing but the worst for this business. You wanna disrespect a costumer like that youre heading no where but down. Fuck this place. read more
