It makes SUCH a difference when the comfort of customers and how good a time they have are top of the list of considerations for a live music establishment. The gig I went to was sold out but it was so comfortable, with plenty of room to move about so it wasn't too hot, remained uncrowded, and we had a very nice time. Very friendly people on the door and running the bar which opens in to the venue and also to a bar room the other side. Not a bad choice of beer and not too badly priced. I don't think this place edges my beloved Brudenell in Leeds but it's still a very fine establishment. The door policy is relaxed so you can go in and out very easily and the strict searches and ID hassles of venues in London is totally absent. I only saw an acoustic show last week but the sound was absolutely spot on - crisp and you could hear everything the musicians were doing. I'd like to see something really noisy here sometime to see how the sound system handles that. This is a place I'll be coming to again for sure...

I visited this club with family at christmas time and was really impressed…read more The club is clean and really well kept with the decor being a little dated as per most social and conservative clubs but still it has a very nice and friendly atmosphere and we had a really enjoyable evening. The bar has a really good selection of drinks at really competetive prices. the staff in here are really efficient and freindly and really do make the place an enjoyable place to spend a quiet evening. Theres often live entertainment which is normally dire but then its also either free or very cheap so thats fair enough. The club is well situated within a housing area and is well worth a visit.

Shows where the division between the audience and the band dissolved and it felt like there was just a large room of people totally hypnotised by the music. Originally a cinema in the 1930s, Manchester Apollo is a beautiful theatre that still retains most of it's original features. There's a foyer with merchandising stalls and toilets, an upstairs bar, lots of balcony seating, a side bar towards the left of the stage and a main bar at the back of the theatre. It's the theatre itself which is truly special however, with a slanted floor, beautiful ceiling, impressive stage and rows of velvet seats - which are taken out for rock shows. I'd give the Apollo 5 stars for atmosphere, sound and ambience. I've gotta deduct one star however, for the truly extortionate and underwhelming drinks. As the venue is owned by Carling, there's an extremely limited range of beer - no Sol, Corona, Belgian or Czech beers! - and spirits on offer. The spirits and mixers are also so small, it's only worth going to the bar if you're planning to get a couple or chase them down with a Guinness! Tucked away in the heart of suburbia a club for dancing. But not a dance club, if you see what I…read moremean. This is a big old Victorian mansion, the sort that Whalley Range has oodles of. It's quite shabby in an 80s way but it's got a kind of charm to it. It's got a few different monthly nights. One is 80s/90s hip hop, another northern soul and also a psychedelic night. The night I went to was Home on the Range (geddit!) which is the last Friday of the month and "is a night of soul, funk, hip hop, house, reggae and lots in-between for the dancefloor hungry" according to the people that run it. I had a great time and everyone was totally up for dancing. Actually with the dated function room and slightly older crowd it felt like we'd crashed a wedding but nobody minded as they were all too busy dancing. They really did dance hard, it felt like a very sweaty night in Ibiza. And I was reminded when they played some house music that this is the generation that invented clubbing. It's also cheap. It's a fiver to get in. Then I paid another fiver for a pint of Heineken and a can of red stripe. Yes to social club prices! They also let you bring your glass of beer outside(!) when you need to cool down at the picnic tables. The woman on the ticket desk said when I asked "there's not that many rules around here". Probably because the crowd came to dance and have a good time. I'm going back soon.

It's worth…read morementioning at this point that this is a members 'club', however the general public are allowed in at a cost of £1, very reasonable in my opinion. The club has a couple of full sized snooker tables upstairs, along with a pool table, darts, a bandit machine and a huge projector screen and tvs where all kinds of sports are broadcast. Downstairs is the function room that can be hired for any event you may have, which also has a large bar. The club often host karaoke and bingo nights down here, whilst upstairs is for the more casual drinker and where you'll find most of the regulars! Opening hours are impressive, with the club open 7 days a week, day and night. This probably goes without saying, but the more vibrant evenings with the best atmosphere are Friday and Saturday or when a sporting event is on, but don't let that put you off as whenever you go you are guaranteed to feel welcome. Drinks are very reasonably priced and overall I can have no real complaints about the conservative club!
