My loved one suffered a traumatic stroke. They were lovingly cared for at Wellspan York Hospital, then transferred to UPMC Memorial for longterm acute care. We were apprehensive due to the reviews, but hopeful, because the drive was shorter. Now, we wish we never set foot there. They made an already devastating experience even worse. They changed medications without telling us, which affected preexisting conditions and personality. They were not equipped with specialists needed. Their nursing is subpar. They are lazy and inattentive. Their communication with patients, families, and each other is horrendous. We had a family member there at all times, except overnight, because we could not trust them to do their jobs. We learned that the night shift staff was the laziest. We advocated and attended to our loved one when alarms went off and we had to hunt people down, or if the nurses didn't assist with toileting and loved one messed. We noticed symptoms and requested care and testing. We were so excited for our loved one to transfer to the next facility- a light at the end of the tunnel, though we felt pushed out of UPMC Memorial too quickly. When we arrived at the new facility, we learned that UPMC did NOT efficiently prepare them for us. They had no idea what our patient needed. We had to start over. The new facility immediately began correcting wrong medications and fixing UPMC Memorial's mistakes. We are praying their care will ease the mental anguish and unnecessary distress caused to our loved one, over time. If we didn't have a person with our loved one at all times, who knows how this would have turned out. UPMC Memorial dropped ALL the balls when it comes to providing care, comfort, communication, consistency, attention, and healing. There are a handful of good eggs for whom we're grateful. A tech here or there, a nurse or two, a PT, an SLP. But they alone unfortunately cannot make up for the utter recklessness and laziness we experienced in our few weeks there. Please, go elsewhere. read more

Came in from out of town and wanted to see my family member but they only allow 2 ppl in at a time. Just know before coming with a child that it's only 2 people. Well, I receive a letter from UPMC emergency room today. Of course I was the liar when I went in there the first time I did tell them I was short of breath I would've never went over for just leg. Pain doesn't make sense.! When I went over the first time, I said leg, pain and shortness of breath and my husband can verify that! The lack of care was ridiculous, and the lack of concern ! All I heard the second time how dehydrated I was but never offered any fluids or never offered a glass of water so the nurses need to quit complaining if you're going to complain, do something about it to make the situation better ! I went in there the second time where I couldn't breathe and I walked out eight hours later still couldn't breathe. Who does that? So who investigated this situation you can believe who you wanna believe I could absolutely care less ! The doctors are very unconcerned about anything over there ! They need to get off the computers and off their chairs and maybe move around and check on patients a little more than what they do every time you look out they're all sitting on computers ! Where is the care for the patients? And I'm sure that everybody that sticks there headhead in bills the insurance company that's why insurance rates are out the roof ! I just believe there's no concern for humans In general. When I take my dogs to the veterinarian, they get treated better ! So I wanted to update my review to tell everybody out there. By far the worst hospital I have ever been to. The staff are openly hostile to the patients and clearly regret their choice of profession. They call to mind the stereotype of the jaded police officer ready to eat his gun. The doctors and nurses are condescending, arrogant, and will absolutely refuse to listen to anything you have to say. They will diagnose you without bothering to examine you and argue with you about everything. Extremely unprofessional, incompetent, and apathetic. A disgrace to the healthcare profession. Avoid this place, you will receive no care or compassion here. They will do absolutely nothing beneficial for you and tell you to consult a specialist on your own time. I have never felt so hopeless with a team of doctors in my life. I've gone through hospice care 3 times in my life now. Just about every single person in this facility is about damn near useless. Every "Doctor" I've talked to at this location has just pushed me off onto another "Doctor" because they didn't want to deal with my symptom. I had to start going to UPMC Mercy in PITTSBURGH 3 HOURS AWAY FROM WHERE I LIVE! I don't recommend a single person in the greater York area go to this hospital. Jamie below was not joking about ER. I was there on the 29th of October 2021. There were people who were there literally sitting more than 15 hours when we got there. There were people who might have checked in but were not treated. The place was literally packed when we checked in around 6:30ish pm. I was blown away by the fact that I, too, sat there 16+ plus hours and many of the people who were there before me were slowly being put into beds around 8 am in the morning 30th Oct 2021 - so you are talking elderly people with no money or little money for food, other people not expecting to be there that long not eating or drinking 15-30+ hours straight sitting upright unattended. My boyfriend was helping some of the elderly ladies out with food. I was post-op from lung surgery, mild Pleural Effusion, coughing, having trouble with breathlessness, and I wasn't even offered oxygen. We assumed since it was a NEW hospital it would not have such a lack of room issues. Wrong! The staff said they had to wait for beds to open up for people, generally upon morning work hours! Staff needs to whip out cots or something, pay people to go around making sure people are at least comfortable, eating, drinking, basic first aid at least. I can see how easily dehydration can cause dizziness, heart palpitations, breathlessness, etc. So, if you are there, for one thing, you're gonna have more issues by the end of the night, plus issues from not eating. If you have to go to the hospital, pack up food and drinks (or take lots of money - the food is very good and very cheap in the cafeteria if they are open). Vending machines run around $1.25 and up for food and drinks. It's a beautiful hospital with nice landscaping, but waiting room comfort is bad. Maybe they need all reclining chairs. People were trying to lie on chairs but since they have handles very few people could lie down. I elected to go home after staff took me in around 9 am because I am deaf and the hospital is not accessible at all to late-deafened or hard of hearing people with no or very little signing skills. If that's how long it takes just for a brief discussion on accessibility, what's it gonna be like getting treated or needing help in a room? read more

I spent about 2 weeks in and out of the hospital with an infection in my intestine and a hernia as well. I lost roughly 30lbs in a week. I was very sick and I hated feeling as weak as I did. There was the emergency room that you first have to go to to be admitted. The emergency room time passes a little slower in that area to be honest. Once you get a room upstairs I feel like you're treated better and I really appreciate it as I wasn't feeling well. There was a young nurse named Abbi who stuck out because I feel she went above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks again UPMC I'm feeling better and I want to thank Abbi on the third floor as well. Cheers and I hope to see y'all again but at The grocery store somewhere different. read more

Absolute worse emergency room. I was brought by ambulance for severe vomiting over 3 days of throwing up. Was left in the emergency on display dry heaving and hunched over in severe pain. Never seen never made comfortable. After 3 hours of sitting I asked what was happening only to be told that they needed a urine sample. I have no urine and they should have asked 3 hrs prior I could have given them some. The triage nurse is so uncompassionate I can see why they have armed guards there to watch over them the way they treat people. You are better off dying in the comfort of your own home. read more

The worst uncaring hospital. They do not listen or care what the patient wants. My wife was physically assaulted by a male nurse shoving a Foley catheter in her and laughing and she never consented to the catheter. She was dying in ICU. My wife wanted me to stay with her 24/7 at the hospital because of panic attacks ane the hospital refuses her wishes. They close doors and push family members outside so you can't see what they are doing to your loved one. Yet when you first get there they make you watch a video where the CEO of UPMC promises to treat you "like a cherished family member." Just PR bullcrap. Stay away from this place if you want your loved one to live. read more

Well I can tell you believe all the bad reviews you read on here. The ER wait is horrendous. The one girl at the desk at the ER is rude. They only let one person go sit with the patient, however they will keep you here for hours on end and not let you switch out the person waiting with the patient. There is this woman currently in the ER puking writhing in pain, she came in doubled over and she is still out in the waiting room. Not exactly sure what's wrong with her but she obviously needs attention. She shouldn't be sitting out in the waiting room throwing up and screaming in pain. I honestly feel so bad for this poor girl. No need to reply to my post either. Obviously you have no intention of fixing the issues, besides oh sorry we will strive to do better, and you do nothing so just save it. It's a horrible hospital. i can't really describe it other than negligent. Denying for 12 hours basic ER care such as fluids to people dying in the ER. Took me threatening an attorney to get my fiancée back. They'll be hearing from my attorney, what they did was torture. The entire staff handling the front desk area of the ER should not be caring for people. Please, if you care about your loved ones go to wellspan or Hershey, it's worth the extra 15 minutes to half hour of drive. Don't go to their ER, stay far far away. read more

Sat in the ER with my son for over 7 hours waiting to be seen. (checked in at 8:24pm) My son was there with chest pain, shortness of breath and stomach pain. Place was packed (definitely no one was 6 feet a part) After they did his vitals and performed an EKG we were sent back to the waiting room to wait. After 4 hours of waiting I asked why they advised they were short staffed?? Are you serious?? This is a hospital, not to mention a NEW hospital. Then they advised me that they are taking patients from the ambulances as well. I told the guy I was going to go home and call the ambulance so he could be seen before anyone else there. By 4:00AM we were over it. I went back up to the desk and asked how much longer. They told me they didn't know?? I will NEVER go back to this hospital. I sat in the waiting room in a broken wheel chair for almost 2 hours crying in pain from a herniated bulging disc in my back. My husband pleaded for the staff to let me lay anywhere to relieve some of the pain even if they couldn't see me right away but they refused. Once I finally got taken back, they refuse to do any imaging, and just pumped me with pain meds, sent me home with two days of pain meds knowing the Thanksgiving holiday was coming and I would have no chance of follow up with a Neuro practice. I ended up in more pain after the two day supply of meds and decided to go to Well Span ER where they got me taken care of within 15 minutes of being there and discovered I actually needed surgery. Per the doctor who performed the surgery it was the biggest herniated bulging disc he's ever removed in his career. UPMC had a delay in care for me which led to more pain, more missed work, and overall a bad taste for the facility in general. I will never go back there or recommend it to anyone!. read more

I was scene in the ED 2 weeks ago. I have an extensive back, neck, head history. This particular day I had fallen hard on the concrete because of ice. I felt the pain shoot through my bottom to my head. Long story short, pain management (another joke) said i needed to be seen at an ED. Closest one, unfortunately, here. I was taken to the triage room. Ask a few questions, they didn't listen to anything i said except PAIN MANAGEMENT. That perked then right up...I must be a drug seeker. They did ZERO physical exam, gave me a tetanus shot and sent me home with papers on opiod abuse! I emailed administration immediately. I dare them to bill me! Stay far away from this place. Not all people with chronic issues are drug seekers! Maybe had they bothered to go over my medication list, they would've known that. Piss poor! read more

I had my first and quite recent visit to the ER here. Parking was simple and literally right in front of the entrance. Can't say it's that easy at some other hospitals I've been to. The staff that helped me were personable, friendly and seemed to have a real willingness to help. They treated my situation with urgency and did everything possible to make me feel at ease. Although she was nice, the registration woman had trouble hearing, asked me multiple times to repeat myself and if I didn't correct her she would have plugged in some wrong information. The discharge process was pretty seamless and all in all I was there for only a few hours. Not bad compared to hours spent in some other ER rooms, mostly waiting and waiting. read more

I was very relieved that my husband was in good hands during his two procedures here. The nursing staff and doctors were incredibly friendly and helpful, and they did their best to ease our minds. What I most liked was that we received a call the day after the outpatient procedure from a nurse to check on how the recovery was going and to ask if there was anything that the hospital could have done differently. Since there were no complaints on our end, we told them that they did a great job. They were attentive and caring, which is all we asked for. They also have a nice tracking system for the family members waiting for their loved ones to get out of surgery. It was a relief for me to be able to know when I could expect my husband to be out of surgery and in recovery. read more

I was hoping to not have to return to the hospital for a while, but when an accident happened at home I was glad the hospital was only 10 minutes from my house. I received very compassionate care and pain management. was very efficient. I felt as if they took my situation seriously and gave me top-notch treatment. Never again!!!!! I miss memorial hospital. This place is not the same. That ER is a biohazard zone. I was a driver for a n injuries person I wasn't sick but I was forced to sit among the puking and infected nonetheless. Net design hospital and no infectious room for ppl to sit in to ya know control infection?!? We waited 5 hours. Continuously told we were waiting on a bed. Only to find out there were 25 beds empty in the back they had six beds operating. UPMC thinks it's OK for people to wait five hours. The staff -nurses and doctors were all seated in chairs with coffee in hand Having casual conversation while we waited until 3 AM to be seen. Zero reason for the wait. Fuck me UPMC ? No Fuck you. Memorial is a great hospital. Both times I was recently in need of their service, I was seen without even having to sit down. They took my name and immediately walked me to a room where a doctor was waiting for me! This level of service is just unheard of in bigger hospitals. If you are having a major medical emergency, go to York Hospital. Memorial is better for smaller issues. In a similar fashion, they also work with you on your bill. When you are about to leave they come by, and offer discounts and payment plans without making you look like a bum. read more

Memorial is better than York, but they still have issues. I was there to get gallbladder surgery and a dermoid cyst removed. I had a good and bad experience there. The nurses who prepped me for surgery were so nice that I complimented them. I told them I had a chronic illness and I am always mistreated, but that they were the nicest people in the Medical Field I have seen in a while and that it made me happy! But after the surgery, it was a nightmare! Someof the nurses I had were horrible and the caretaker or whoever was in charge of making sure I got good care did a horrible job and was discriminatory against me! The first nurse I had after surgery was supposed to get me something to snack on and instead of telling me she was going on break, she just goes on break and forgets to bring it. A different guy who worked there and was not even a nurse asked how I was being treated, I told him, so he went and got the pudding himself. He kept checking on me and was nice. So I liked him. After her, I got a nice nurse again. She was attentive and kind. But after her, I got the rudest nurse on the planet who acted like she did not want to do her job or be there. If I asked her questions, she just snapped at me. I get some people have hard days, but so do I. I am the patient. Do not take it out on me because you are having a hard day. Also some unknown nurses who moved me, treated me like garbage because I had my back hunched. I am disabled. I cannot walk long distances and it causes me pain. I was already in pain due to the surgery, so the pain with the disability adds to it. So I was hunched over a bit and trying to walk. The nurse said to me, "Straighten your back!" I said, "I cannot! I am disabled. It is hard for me to walk." "Well! WE DO NOT NEED ANY ACCIDENTS AROUND HERE!" Excuse me? What really made me mad was when the physical therapist and her assistant came. I was afraid of it because I am disabled and I was afraid of discrimination. I told one of the nurses this and I think she told the other nurse on duty for me. I do not remember if they told the physical therapist or not. I know they had to move me around due to the surgery. They let me use a walker. But because I did fine for five minutes, they automatically assumed I was full of it when it came to I cannot walk long distances and started treating me like trash about my chronic illness. He probably did not know what he was saying and was not educated, but still. Her assistant said to me, "I do not like that you barely move around at home." I said, "Hey, me neither. I did not choose this illness." He grumbled, "Oh, I know." The caretaker or whoever came to see if I was getting proper treatment and talked to me about a walker. I asked for a wheelchair, not for the surgery recovery, but because I cannot walk long distances and it is to the point I cannot get out of the house much, unless I have one. It is that bad and I am seeing a back doctor//plan to see a podiatrist. She flat out said, "No! You are too young to be immobilized!" Excuse me? They have some ignorant people there. I was "too young" according to my surgeon to have gallbladder issues, but when she checked me, they found out I HAD THE ISSUE! AGE has nothing to do with it. Not happy. But I would choose this hospital over York. At least they did not treat me like a druggie, like York Hospital did. So I give them credit there. If you are in York, you have the choice of Memorial or York Hospital. I would pick Memorial over York Hospital, but this one needs some work. read more

Love pinnicle will always choose this over Wellspan any day. But this new hospital is very pretty but isn't very patient or visitor friendly. God forbid if you are in the outpatient clinic and need to go to the main hospital for anything hopefully you enjoy a walk. I was in the outpatient imaging with my daughter she was getting test done and i needed to get a file from the hospital and i had to actually walk outside and around the front because the catwalk they put in during building is walled up due to some health code violation. So if it rains or snows or is an emergency you will have to walk outside in the elements. I'm handicapped and can't walk very far this was ridiculous. Also if you are there for any length of time pack a lunch for they have no vending machines in this part so again you will have to go up a floor down a hall , outside to the front of hospital and walk back inside down the way you just came from to go to the only little "cafe" in this huge hospital. I truly think someone missed the big opportunity of a smart hospital in hospitality to the people that come in those doors already stressed and in need. And yes the care is the most important thing here and that is it's saving grace. read more

i have been using Memorial Hospital since I came to York in 1968. I love this place, as much as you can a hospital. Mother came to stay with me and in July 2015 she was admitted for about a week, from the ER to the second floor she was treated with nothing but respect and caring, the hospital is clean, the doctores, nurses, attendants, house cleaning, EVERYTHING and everyone was absolutely great, same thing for her last visit a yesterday. You could not ask for a more caring, helpful people not only to her but to me as well. I'll always go to and recommend Memorial Hospital without any hesitation. I love you guys!!!!!!! read more

My husband was admitted into the ER 1/8 and had surgery on 1/11. Being released on 1/20. I could site many incidents that occurred that jeopardized his recovery. The nite before major surgery they inadvertently fed him a full course meal. He shouldn't have had anything! Every procedure was cancelled or rescheduled, x-rays, cat scans, replacing a picc line. Now it's time to release him and they have even rescheduled that from 1 to 4 and I'll be lucky if it happens then. I am not happy with their services and will not allow my husband to return there under any circumstances. read more

Without going into detail, I had abdominal surgery. I went to this hospital because my DR practiced out of it. This was not my first surgery, the first being at York Hosp. Intake was great, the nurse was happy and helpful. Then it all goes down hill. The anesthesiologist was a trainee (which I was not asked or told) and did not properly prepare me, as I saw and heard just before I was put to sleep when the 'real' one admonished him for what he did wrong. Post surgery, I heard the nurses mention to my husband how worried they were that I was not waking up& that he needed to get me out of bed and for a walk. Even though I was immobile, I could hear everything. When I did get out of bed, we noticed what appeared to be a half dollar piece of the bloody tissue they removed. Even the nurse was horrified. Once my husband left, I had to help myself out of the bed to the bedside toilet, which was rarely emptied. The catheter they placed inside me must have been removed quickly and w/ out thought because my 'area' was painful. I asked the nurse, who turned out to be an nurse assistant and the only one I saw 99% of the time. She had to call the night nurse who chuckled, told me about the catheter. Her attitude was less than caring. All night monitor alarms & IV machines were going off and not answered for 10 minutes - at least the one I actually timed. One man in the room next to me begged for a nurse for 4 minutes before one actually came. At one point I pressed the call button only to have a male nurse, a nurse at all?, hang up on me. later on a 'helper' came by and asked if I wanted some assistance walking or bathing and said she'd be right back. She never did. When it came time for release, I had to wait for someone to come w/ a chair. Believe me, I was ready to RUN out the door. As some alarms were still going off in the rooms, a crowded nurses station just sat there, ignoring them. I just received a NEW bill, having questioned the first and there is a credit on it...and right under it, they re apply the credit. So, no credit at all. They have charged me for medications I never took. And if I understood all of the medications they gave me while under, I'm sure I could find more 'fluff' and false charges. MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IS THE WORST HOSPITAL I HAVE EVER HAD THE DISSATISFACTION OF HAVING TO DEAL WITH. York Hospital is transparent in their practices and a five star hotel compared to this abomination of a medical institution. I urge you NOT to go here,if it's your only choice, get a 2nd opinion. (I compare this surgery w/ the one I had at York, and there really is NO comparison.) After my business is completed w/ Memorial, I will be writing a letter to anyone who will listen, telling my story and the incompetence. While I hate to disparage ANYONE, I feel like the Powers That Be and the public at large need to know what a horrible place this is. BEWARE! read more

I have dealt with this hospital since the 90's, & have had quality visits & stays, every time the ER was needed...until last evening, Sat., Oct. 6, 2018...Arrived just after 5 pm, with only 1 other lady in waiting area...saw triage, took a seat, & only 1 other lady came in with a child who only needed the minute clinic,,,well, 2 1/2 hrs. later, & after others filtered in, I ask the lady how long she has been waiting...her response was 4 1/2 hrs. !!! Asking if she ask anyone what was going on, she did so, & was told,"they couldn't tell her" ! The doors to the ER area opened & closed, with very little movement, or anybody around was noted...I ask the young lady at the desk the same as the lady did, & she just stared at me....I was done !!! Calmly told her I was just going to go, she responded,"OK"...WOW !!! I left there totally stunned & upset, now wondering what Pinnacle means when said, they are bringing a whole new concept to our area...why couldn't just a simple explanation be given, if one ! Intend to inquire further, as I am scheduled for surgery there on Oct. 16th. read more
