The village has a delightful market in the centre where one can buy dressed crab, cooked whole lobster and my absolute total, complete favourite, in all the world, potted brown shrimps, sealed in butter. Forget caviar and lobster this, with good buttered toast, is the true food of the gods. Ambrosia. There are flower sellers, cake sellers, sellers of LP's from the 1960's, cheese sellers offering small batch local cheeses, folks with woodfired ovens for sourdough pizzas, beer and wine sellers, upmarket hand made chocolates, oriental and Jamaican food (I don't think I could face goat curry) and a fish & chip shop. I'm sure I've left out a lot of purveyors in this snapshot. It's also teeming with competitively priced coffee places, cafes and bars and as the competition is so fierce there's no downmarket offerings.

Marks and Spencer in Altrincham is a fairly good location, although it isn't the best/biggest…read morelocation in the area, and I do prefer their Manchester Market Street and Bolton stores, this isn't a bad alternative and it is one of my favourite stores in Altrincham town centre. It has improved a lot since my last visit, the store is now much cleaner and free of clutter to warrant an upgraded rating. The selection in the food hall was good, they had a nice range of products, again this might be slightly less compared to other stores, but I still was able to find the majority of what I needed which was handy. This store is also using the new Mobile Scan and Pay, where you can scan items and bag them as you shop in the Food Hall, pay via your phone and walk out, this is a feature I love but it always makes me feel strange as you just walk out of the store, it makes you feel like a thief, even though you have paid, you do get a payment proof on your phone incase someone does stop you, but I am worried about the security of this if someone is dishonest. Most of the staff seemed friendly and happy to help when required. Above-average Marks and Spencer store, a great brand to have in Altrincham if you don't feel like going into the city centre or another larger store.

A decent Poundland location, strangely it is one of two in Stockport town centre (Is that really…read morenecessary?), this location is slightly smaller than their Merseyway location, but I do find this location on Warren Street, next to ASDA to look better in terms of interior/exterior and they also have a decent range of products (excluding clothing, which is only stocked at their Merseyway store) Most items seemed to be a reasonable price, some obviously were just the average price, especially in terms of confectionary compared to the supermarkets nearby and other nearby discount stores including Home Bargains. They do have self-service tills which is handy, which is common in most Poundland locations. They had a slightly better selection of beverages than the nearby Merseyway store, but I once again struggled to find my Lipton Iced Teas, which I was looking for. 3* - OK, many similar/slightly better stores just a couple of minutes walk away, it doesn't really stand out but isn't terrible.

Harveys Furniture is my favourite furniture store in the Peel Centre, it had much better service…read moreand selection than DFS nearby, it is a rather large store although slightly smaller than nearby DFS, with Bensons for Beds occupying the upper level of this store with a lift between the two making it fully accessible. I came here with a new sofa in mind, I had a very specific idea of what I wanted in a new sofa which was: - A two-seater yet not too large as it had to fit in my small living room - Comfortable yet I didn't care for more premium features such as reclining - Armrests which were spacious yet not too high (to act as a mini table if you will to rest my laptop) I'm pleased to say I was able to find a sofa to match my specifications, unlike at DFS nearby and the staff member seemed really helpful, one thing I liked was she didn't care about her commission, she cared about getting me the right sofa and delivering good service: she had no problem taking me to the clearance range first and helped explained about the product and how it was firm due to only coming in a few days ago where it was returned by a customer who changed her mind. I did have to wait a little while for her to confirm everything and communicate with the delivery driver as I did live over 15 miles away, I only came to this store as it is the easiest for me to get to via public transport, with it only being around 3/4 of a mile from Stockport Railway Station which is around 7-18 minutes on the train from Manchester, with the quicker services being with Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry. I was told that as it was a clearance item I couldn't pay on finance but that was fine as I had no intention of doing that anyway, the only slightly frustrating thing for me was the high delivery charge compared to other sofa places, but I was willing to pay it as £69 is only a little bit more than the £30-£40 average charge and considering I do live a little further out, and this was a bespoke product (there was only one) I liked which already had a good reduction in price at £479 and they could even deliver it the same day within a couple of hours, I was pleased with that. Harvey's also had genuinely lovely people as the staff, as my original server had too many customers at once, someone else who was free took over and they actually tried to persuade each other to take the commission on my order, I've never seen staff fight over why the other worker should get the bonus before, it wasn't an aggressive fight, it was just a friendly chat between friends more than anything, and if Harvey's are listening they both deserved it for excellent service! I would have liked to see a better selection of other items such as tables, however, and more of a variety of colours on their clearance range would have also been more exciting, but still, a rather good furniture shop where I finally found my sofa! 4*

Lifts are notable as they seem to be quicker and have fewer people queuing at peak-times compared to the main lifts within intu Trafford Centre. Staff seemed friendly enough. A pretty decent store, but only made better through being one of two stores within the mall, and even then it falls short compared to their larger flagship store nearby. 3*

The shop itself is also busy too. The staff were working as hard and fast as they could to get the drinks and food out but struggling slightly with the sheer volume of customers. This Debenhams store is located in Oldham town centre, on the lower floor of Spindells mall, one thing I've noticed is that for a Debenhams store it is a little small, which can be expected for a degree in comparison to the stores in larger cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, who have much better stores. The store throughout doesn't seem modern at all, it is quite old-fashioned, and reminds me of an old department store, considering this is located in a shopping mall which was built in the 80's/90's, it still feels like the unit hasn't changed too much in that time. The staff seemed friendly enough and the location does have a small cafe. 2* - A nice brand to have in Oldham, despite being old-fashioned it isn't terrible and I do feel it would be a huge disadvantage to the town, without this store.

I live in the US now and Debenhams reminds me of a mini Macy's. As a petite lady, I love that they have petite sections, especially their own Collection brand and the Dorothy Perkins brand. British fashions are way more appealing to me than their US counterparts. Typical department store set up with men's, women's, children, home, fragrances, shoes, accessories and the like. I like the cafe too. Debenhams was my first job out of high school (a couple decades ago) so some sentimental nostalgia and happiness that it is still here! :) If you need something quick for self, home or gift, Debenhams offers nice and good quality merchandise, just limited selection compared to some of stores in bigger cities.
