The heatwave that hit the EU didn't deter visitors but it was still good that we visited in the morning before it got hotter or crowded. There were a few die hard SOM movie fans prancing around the Pegasus fountain before running up the steps, posing by the gladiator statues at the entrance or running through the Hedge Tunnel. The garden of dwarf statues was quieter and I wondered if visitors knew they had to cross a bridge (near the Pegasus Fountain) to gain access. The Mirabell Palace was somewhat open as we could really only climb the Angel Staircase but couldn't enter the hall where Mozart played or really anywhere else unfortunately. Still worth seeing. Lastly make sure to check out the Orangerie where the Panorama Museum was just relocated and opened in a very modern setting in June. The Sattler Panorama painting inside was a 360 degree view of Salzburg from the early 1800s. Make sure to also view the interactive terminals to do a side by side comparison between the panorama of now and the . Admission was included as part of the Salzburg Card.

Moon Lake! This is one of the largest privately owned lakes…read morein all of Austria! This is such a beautiful place - an alpine lake out in the middle of the Alps. I didn't go in, but the water looks cold. Since it's owned privately, Nicolette Wächter owns it, she decided that it shall be open to the public, but off limits to people with motorized vessels. So this makes it a quiet mountain lake, where you gotta go slowly. I'm sure all the fish appreciate the quiet too! There's some excellent views of and around this lake. It makes me wanna yodel. There's some sort of legend behind this lake that involves people wading out in to the lake on horseback and almost drowning if it weren't for the moon. So since it's also somewhat shaped like a crescent moon, they named it Moon Lake. I don't think Moon River flows into Moon Lake. According to Wikipedia, this lake is also mentioned in a James Bond novel!

Very easy to navigate. 1st floor has several restaurant to grab food, gift shops and also rest area. Next to the rest area has OBB dedicated rest area. Near the exit, there is OBB office to buy tickets or make changes. Information board os accurate and large signes directing you to the upstairs platform. You can also take the escalator next to the stairs. Must if you have a large luggage. On the screen, if the white circle blinks, that means your train has arrived and you can board. All OBB seats can be reserved for few extra €. If not, just seat at any open seats but expect to let it go for people with reservation. Definitely 5 star station. There are few very busy, dirty and unorganized trains in Europe especially ones in Zurich. Watch out for pan handlers.

We took the bus to Hellbrunn and the stop was around 10 minutes walk to Hellbrunn. The bus was free since we had the Salzburg Pass. We obtained our timed entry tickets from the gift shop. Timed tickets were needed for the trick fountains versus the palace which could be entered anytime. We spent one hour for the walk through all the trick fountains and half an hour inside the palace. One caveat about the trick fountains, the first entry timeslot required waiting around the first fountain until enough other visitors arrived. The grounds team would then man the control boxes/valves and manually turn them on to control the fountains and the tricks. This repeated at each stop on the map. No automation just old school, hundreds of years old tech. Definitely take the time linger at each stop as some were elaborately designed fountains, grottoes, gardens, statues or water powered mechanical figures. The staff definitely caught us and many others with surprise squirts of water from hidden spouts in the ground, walls or ceiling (especially in the Neptune Grotto). The floating crown was another must experience grotto. The mechanical theatre, with its three stories of moving townsfolk figures (all powered by water), was the ending highlight of the walk. The Palace itself was well maintained and contained exhibits about the palace, fountains and the original owner the Prince Archbishop. The stuffed "unicorn" will catch your attention. Well worth taking the bus ride from Salzburg.

So it's not technically where they filmed the scene, but it's the real gazebo on very beautiful grounds, and standing in front of it in Salzburg still feels cool The palace and park themselves are a bigger win: a 17th-century pleasure palace with enormous, well-maintained grounds that are genuinely gorgeous to wander on a good day. The trick fountains are a legitimate reason to come, although they were off on the day of our visit which was a bummer. If you're in Salzburg and have any interest at all in the film or just want an afternoon outside the old town, this is worth the trip.

The city streets are packed with sights and shopping, with narrow and picturesque stonework. You can see where Mozart was born and the house that he lived as a child. In the off season, it is quiet and not so busy with tourists.

The view from the campsite is gorgeous, you overlook the entire city of Salzburg. The camp site is close to a bus stop if you don't mind a short walk through a field to the 13 bus. If you need directions the management in the office is more than happy to oblige. The office closes around 10pm so call ahead or try and get there early and they only take cash transactions. There is a small shop inside the office area where you can get butter, other breakfast treats and of course the famous Stiegl beer.

A must is the WIENER SCHNITZEL in the restaurant. Travel into the city is an easy walk down the hill to the bus stop with a nice playground/park for the kids just before you cross the footbridge. Bus journey is less than 10 minutes. Make sure you get to the caravan park office as soon as it opens in the morning to buy the FRESH BREAD. What a fun tour! I was looking for something kind of silly to do on our vacation, and after a day…read moreup at the Eagle's Nest, this seemed like a fun way to unwind. You are given a miner's jumpsuit and a locker to put your valuables in....no personal recording devices on this tour! Next, you get picked up by a miner's train and the tour begins...you are taken directly into a mountain through some very narrow passages. At the end of the railway, you get off and begin walking through various rooms showing you the history of the mine, including various pieces of equipment used over the years. You learn a little bit about the topography of the mountain range and how extensive the mine and others like it are. At two separate points, you slide down a wooden slide, and go deeper into the earth. Smile, because there is one of those attraction cameras that catch your reaction to the descent. A little more walking and you are corralled onto a floating platform that floats (it's pulled by a pulley system) across an underground lake. The water is crystal clear and there is a very nice light show as you cross. At the end of the tour, you hop back on the train and ascend to where you originally got on. Someone is there to take yet another picture of you! Once you are off the train, you turn in your jumpsuit, retrieve your belongings, and exit through the gift shop. The gift shop consists of bottles of salt from the mine, as well as the usual touristy stuff: clothing, bags, postcards, etc. Parking for tourists is across the street in a paid lot with a tunnel to get you safely across the road. We were lucky, in that our tour had about 15-20 people in it, so we could see and hear everything quite easily. The day was sunny and clear, so maybe people just didn't want to be inside on such a nice day, but that is exactly when I would advise to see something like this, as it apparently gets very crowded on rainy days. 19/2021
