People often ask why I go to church every Sunday. "Are you devoting time to God?" No, I'm devoted to the spiritual purpose of the human being. Because I'm Devine and I refuel my spiritual battery with my fellow spiritual brothers and sisters at Unity Church. It's my pleasure to be one of the contributing members of this community. I started coming in August 2023 and immediately fall in love with Unity of Houston. The ministry offers many meaningful events and classes. I attended the Journey Through Grief, which facilitated by Rev. Mindy Lawrence Curtiss. It was a 6-week course to help me to properly handle grieving of my late husband. From there I met a few friends that led me to my spiritual journey. Since 2024, I got involved with the Fun with Friends activities. That is a unique opportunity for you to participate in a variety of fun gatherings where you get to meet people from our community, make new friends, have fun, create a strong experience of belonging and community, and generate funds for Unity of Houston as people bid in an online auction for spots at the events. I hosted 2 events in 2024: Tea Talk with Lou Can Cook and Vietnamese Spring Roll Class to raise a little over $500 for the church. And in 2025, I repeated the best seller and introduced 2 others: Vietnamese Spring Roll Class, Feng Shui Intro Class and a Chinatown Crawl event, which helped generating over $1500. In additional to events, I volunteer with the AV Media team. You can find me at the church handling camera operation for the live-stream audience or being a screen operator for the in-person audience. Not at the same time, of course. One of my goals for 2019 is to go to church and I've now been to Unity Church three times. I was looking for a non-denominational church and Unity came up as one of the few inside the loop. It was also recommended to me by one of my mentors. They have a service on Wednesday evening as well as two on Sunday morning, one at 9 and one at 11. Since I'm not much of an early riser, I've been going to the 11 AM Sunday service. Unity is a large church with a large parking lot. We're not talking Lakewood but I would guess their 11 AM service gets 300 or so participants. What I really like about Unity is that they're not a traditional church. While they are a Church which means they believe in Christianity, they accept people of all religious and backgrounds. They're open and not exclusive in discouraging certain groups of people to not attend. They also have a really cool set-up. For the first 15 minutes or so, there's live music. The musicians vary and there's one particular gentleman who has an unbelievable voice. From there, the next 15 minutes or a guided meditation by the pastor. I have never heard of a church that does meditation! It's awesome and relaxing. The final 30 minutes or so consists of the pastor's presentation. His name is Michael Gott and I really like him. He's a good speaker, he's personable, and he uses humor. While he obviously quotes the Bible, he also reads quotes from other religious figures, philosophers, authors, etc. It's a well-rounded approach. For example, he quoted the Dalai Lama at a service. Unity doesn't tell you what you should do or what you shouldn't do. They guide you and accept that there are multiple ways to live your life and have a relationship with God. If you're a first-time attendee, they give you a welcome packet and the opportunity to subscribe to their email list. The second time you attend, they make a donation in your name to a charity that focuses on homelessness, children, animals, and one other category that's escaping me. How cool! I haven't joined any groups but they have a bunch if you want to get more involved: 50+, young (under 40), women, couples, singles, LGBTQ, volunteering, etc. If you're looking for a progressive, non-denominational church that does things a little differently, I highly recommend checking out Unity! read more

I am absolutely in love with this church. For a while I was considering going back to church, but looking for home church. A couple of months ago at my doctors office one of the workers told me about her church. I booked marked it and decided to check them out. Like all churches, they were very welcoming. I also liked how they told me about the different things the church offered but don't push it on me. I don't like to talk about race much. Especially here, because they do preach that we all are one. But there were many different races of people throughout the church, staff, and choir. The church is located on Unity Drive. The street is on Hilcroft between Westhimer and Richmond. Now when pulling in from Hilcroft, pass the first parking lot and come to the second. That's the main parking lot. If your come into the first parking lot you'll end up behind the church. Which is fine as well. The church was modern and just as clean as any other church. The dress code is casual. Wear whatever you want. I'm not going to really get into the preaching. I like to respect everyone's religion. But it is a non denominational church and everyone of all religions is welcomed. If you're looking for a church and you're not really the "churchy" type. I was born and raised in a traditional Lutheran church setting and then drifted away from it after high school. In my 30s I found myself searching for something different, while at the same time having a series of experiences that led me to feel on a deep level the connection we have with all life. I tried different spiritual paths and settings until one Sunday I found myself at Unity. The moment I sat down for the service I felt like I'd finally found my place, my home, and I've been going there now for over 20 years. Although the church and staff have evolved, as have I, it still feels like home to me. The people there are a wonderful, positive, open-minded, genuinely loving and accepting blend of so many different backgrounds. The church offers a multitude of different classes, groups, and other resources to help deepen your connection with others and with the Divine, or whatever you prefer to call that presence. While having its roots in a metaphysical Christian setting, Unity in general and certainly this church are open to and engaged in exploring teachings and truths from all spiritual paths. If you're looking for a vibrant, engaging, diverse place to support you in your continued spiritual growth while surrounding yourself with those of similar values and goals, you really should visit Unity, a few times at least, and see if it might become your new home too. I have been attending Unity since the 1980's. I became a member in the 1990's. During this time I was in a dark place. I found a home and family in Unity. They helped me see the light and power of who I was as a child of GOD. As a gay man they did not judge or separate me or discard me as a person. We are all one. My husband and I are members of the Unity Couples. He teaches Sunday school. I am the captain of the greeters. So we went from just attending to as I stated finding a home and family where we wanted to be more involved with our unity family. We love our church community. We have lifetime friends. My go to place when I want to get my Church on! I love Rev Caesar. He uplifts me and being in that church is like going home. For some weird reason, he always talks about subjects that I'm going through right at that moment. Unity is such a wonderful spiritual experience! The atmosphere and energy of the campus is infused with powerful positive energy that is felt when you arrive there. Rev. Howard Caesar's talks are always inspirational and leave you with practical applications that affirm your worth. One of my favorite parts of his talks is the joke or funny story he usually tells. Nothing like a good laugh to make a message stay with you! Rev. Michael is an AWESOME song & worship leader. I love his positive message through song and he's delivers great talks too (check him out at our Wednesday Nite Live service). Rev. Farolyn has such a gentle and graceful spirit about her. Such wisdom... I learn so much from her. Rev. Mindy is such a compassionate soul with a heart of gold. Her prayers are always heartfelt. Rev. Jeanmarie is a breath of fresh air! A wonderful mind and a very loving heart. I am honored to know them and blessed to be in this spiritual community. This is one of the hardest reviews I've ever written, but I think my story needs to be told. My family went to Unity in the 80s. Back then, my mother was a severe alcoholic and also abused prescription drugs. And, unfortunately, there was severe, life-wrecking child abuse going on in our home. I don't think I can write the details of it here, because yelp would probably remove this review. Needless to say, I soon developed depression and my grades fell, so my mother took me to a therapist. The therapist was shocked by what was going on and wanted to put me in a foster home and put my stepfather in jail. My mother (to protect herself and her husband from the law) then forbid me from ever talking to that therapist again, and she instead brought me to Unity for counseling with Howard Caesar. Rev. Caesar's behavior toward me was not what I would hope for when a minister is encountering an abused child with an addict parent. For example, I told him that when my mother violently attacked me, usually I tried to pin her down until she calmed down and would stop. Rev. Caesar asked me if pinning my mother down to stop her violent attacks made me feel like I was hot stuff. He said he detected that I was arrogant because I was one-upping my mother by pinning her down. His ridiculous statements (among others) have stuck with me for life, and other survivors I know usually gasp when they hear them. I do not believe any child has ever developed any kind of self-esteem at all from having to defend themselves against horrific violence from their own alcoholic, drug-addicted mother. Severe violence from a parent is obviously the kind of thing that demolishes kids' self-esteem for life and leads to life-long depression - it does not create conceit. Rev. Caesar also told me that the weird sexual stuff being done to me in my home was not abuse because it did not involve touching and sexual abuse had to involve touching. Wrong again! I have spent much of my adult life studying child abuse and going to therapy for it, and there are many ways to abuse a child sexually without touching them, and some of those happened to me and did indeed scar. There are too many examples of inappropriate statements to list here. But one more: Rev. Caesar recommended that my mother not give me lunch money for a week if I did not finish my weekly chores. So sometimes I was going to school and sitting through entire school days without being able to eat but watching my friends eat. I have since struggled with a serious, decades-long eating disorder, and I strongly believe that food should not be used in any way to punish children. They should be taught that healthy eating is non-negotiable no matter what the circumstances. I've spent a lot of time wondering why Rev. Caesar behaved as he did to me. I think that he said what my mother wanted him to say because she was the one paying him. But in the end, he didn't do her any favors either. After I became an adult, I (any many others) didn't want anything to do with her and she soon died alone of cirrhosis. In the abuse support group I attend, a lot of people have had problems with ministers from various churches either supporting/encouraging their parents' abuse of them, or sometimes even abusing the kids themselves. So it's not just Unity that I feel has to do better with this issue, but instead a lot of churches do. I hope this church will read this and re-examine the way child abuse is treated in their environment. I also hope parishioners will realize that church leaders are often not the best people to bring family problems to. The churches may seem safe to them because ministers usually won't call the police on the parents as readily as therapists will. But the ministers who don't handle these situations well sometimes lead to more damage than if the police had been called. read more

My family found Unity years ago. About 1918, My mother talks about going to Sunday school, and taking the bus after walking across the park when she was 6 year old. It was 1927. I was raised in Unity. I remember I didn't know why in nursery because I was not a baby. I was about 3 years old at the time. I listen to my mother talk about how to behave all the time. I knew she right, I acted all my life like I was part of God. I started to listened Micheal Gott on Youtube this past year, to see what was Unity all about. I got it right. I am listening to M Gott to see what I missed. After all Unity is complicated thing for a child. My life has not been easy for me, I go to a psychialatist, he said, "He doesn't think anybody saw me as I was. The first thing I saw from Gott, him singing, " I See You" I listen to it everyday. My mother was also a Narcissist. It wasn't a choice. I think the narcissist was the hard part. But she had her good points. In true Unity, I forgave her My mother always said when was looking something, "God I know you know where it is" and after that she just would walk to it. I have been a member of Unity Houston since the early 90s. Unity's spiritual teachings and the community have walked with me through many difficult times as well as a lot of joy. I go to this church on Tuesday night for Oneness Blessing that is going from 7pm to 8:30ish. This is a great event and group of people. They are all very nice, I experienced so much peace and well being when I'm in this space and doing this process. It is open to everyone. I highly recommended. What other reviewers have said about feeling welcome the very first time you visit is so true. I had that very same experience over 20 years ago and never left. There have been changes through the years new ministers, new choir directors, new vocalists and band members, new members, old members, but all have been of the highest character and professionalism.
