Unisex, despite what you may think, is not a specialty clothing store but is indeed a hair salon.
And a very cool one at that.
While it was kind of hard to actually locate, you know, like everything in Mannheim, you'll be happy you took the effort. As you might be able to tell, I don't speak German very well, and while I came prepared with my German-native girlfriend, my stylist spoke excellent English and seemed to really enjoy having the chance to practice and chat with me. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think her name was "Zoey", so if you're Germanically challenged, ask for her.
Zoey listened to what I wanted and even in her second language, made me trust that she understood what I was poorly describing. The cut was efficient, inexpensive and made me look pretty cool... what more can you ask for?
While you wait your turn, and you will be waiting for a while if you take advantage of their super cheap Thursday special, you can watch the hilariously over-produced and hipster-to-the-core video loop of a "Gentleman's Barber" played on screens around the salon. I love their passion, but I would prefer to not feel like the producer is inches from the frame ensuring each ice cube in their whiskey glass glistened properly. This has nothing to do with Unisex but I couldn't help but mention it.
After my cut I managed to make a massive fool of myself by misunderstanding a comment my stylist made and I probably turned a shade of red usually seen only in a box of crayons, but she was sweet enough to laugh it off. Thank you for the cut, the conversation, and the compassion for my awkwardness! read more
