If I can give a zero to this store, I would. Don't walk away, RUN AWAY. I have been going to this store, almost weekly for a few years. It has never been so bad - prices are ridiculous, and managers are rude and treat customers like thieves. Whomever manages the prices in this store in Merrifield, is insane. The prices are higher than department store for many items. Worse of all is the way the place is managed. There are two managers at the self checkout who treat customers so terribly. This place has gone really downhill the last few years. The last straw for me was the cashier arbitrarily changing the price of items! The last 3 times I've been to Unique in Merrifield, they've decided to change the price from the what the tag said, WHEN I WAS ALREADY AT THE CHECKOUT. The staff member just came up and said "oh this is wrong" and the doubled or tripled the price lol. Which I'm pretty sure is illegal, or bait and switch at best. So don't believe that the price tag is what you are actually going to pay. Also the prices are completely out of control now - especially for the art / wall hangings. You used to be able to find decently priced used wall hangings, but now they are all priced as if the place is an art gallery. Interesting set-up--like a humongous bazaar! The sheer size of this places raises your expectations but the reality falls short. HOWEVER, My teen daughter got a pair of nice Mossino Supply sunglasses that cost her a whole quarter and a charming Japanese tote (the kind with cutesy characters) for $5. I found a pair of Express pointed toe flats for $12. Lots of hideous fast fashion and polyester fabrics we would never wear. The space is filled to the gills with stuff. If you are a value shopper versus a quality shopper this is the place for you. And this place definitely has fans. I popped in and out but found some great items all for about 10 dollars! I love a good thrift day. I was able to snag the "The New Jim Crow," a book that is currently sold out at most major retailers and found a cute sports jacket that fit my petite frame in the men's section. DO NOT BUY FROM UNIQUE. I attempted to return the clock radio within 24 hrs of purchase because nothing worked. Uniques policy is NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING BACK. It other words they think it is acceptable to sell junk that doesn't work and not stand behind the product. They claimed the clock radio was tested, it was not tested. I refused to take no for an answer so they finally and reluctantly gave me a store credit but said they would never again give me a store credit. No problem I will never shop there. read more

I discovered Unique recently and I am officially a HUGE fan (along with many others because it's always crowded)! There are always multiple people stocking new items so what they have changes often. I've found some good finds: a ballerina music box for my daughter (perfect condition-$5), multiple Loft dresses (around $10 each), 3 woven baskets ($15 for 3) and a really nice laptop carrier ($10) among other things. I could honestly spend a few hours here if I had no time restraints. They send out frequent coupons and have regular sales too. Additionally, you can donate items here too. I really love stopping by when I'm in the area and have 30 minutes. It's a true thrifter's dream. The prices are super reasonable and it's organized. I've found a few gems here. I've found a whole manga series, men's jeans, a dress, etc. I've also donated here. That process was really easy. You pull up to the donation area and wait in the car line until it's your turn. Then you get out and they assist you getting your stuff in. I find all the staff here are friendly as well. Parking is a breeze as it's in a lot. Great finds. They've obviously raised their prices like everyone nowadays but joining the savers club makes it a bit more reasonable. There's really something for everyone here, it's just so huge& so packed in that you have to plan to be there for a few hrs. Two biggest downsides are the lack of a/c, which is almost unbearable in this day and age, and the unlit unsafe parking lot, which seems to be a haven for some menacing unsavory individuals. Didn't expect to end my successful thrifting adventure with an unhinged random man in the parking lot threatening to murder my entire family but I sure did get some amazing kitchenware. read more

Huge place with lots and lots of inventory of all kinds. I love coming here to look around, my areas of interest being the housewares and the toys. Like most other charity thrift shops I visit frequently, their prices are notably higher than they used to be, which is discouraging, given that all the merch was donated. I've shopped at this Unique thrift a few times, but I don't really have an urge to go back. Firstly, I'd rather shop at secondhand stores where I feel confident that the proceeds are going to fund good programs, like Goodwill or some of the thrift stores affiliated with hospitals. Unique says it supports the Virginia Special Olympics, but it's a for-profit store, and its Savers parent company has gotten a lot of negative press for obscuring how much money benefits charity. Second, a lot of the items here are in bad condition, including some that are pretty gross. Sure, there's a lot of nice merchandise, some of which is never-worn or very gently used. But there is also stained and ripped clothing, and items that seem unsanitary and dirty. Maybe it's rejects from stores like Goodwill that Unique buys in bulk? I have no real idea. Just be wary when you shop here, and be prepared to do a lot of searching for true gems. read more

They are selling untested electronics for top dollar $$$$, and you can't exchange or bring it back to the store. I saw some very old speakers selling for around $100 , really (untested) Ebay selling same speakers for $40, and you can return them on Ebay. We are giving them used electronic for FREE!! work and don't work.. This used to be a decent place to shop. Reasonable pricing with fairly extensive options. The options have become narrower which is not the fault of the store. However, the ridiculous price increase has made this place unpopular. Even the basic clothing is priced as they would be in TJ/Wall Mart/Marshlas etc. Who ever is doing the pricing of the products (including homeware, glasses and clothes) needs to get a reality check. Selection wise, I think it's the best thrift store in at least a 30 mile radius. Nine times out of ten i feel like i walk away with at least something. There's a lot to sort through as well as a noticeable group of competitive resellers waiting for new items to hit the floor, but there's always a chance of finding something. Some of my best finds include Lululemon workout apparel, open box graphics cards, hardly worn to brand new shoes as well as vintage items. Weekly membership discounts are also really good and worth signing up for. One thing i have noticed is the upticks in more popular resell worthtly items such as legos and pokemon cards. Some of the clothes are overpriced but sometimes you will get lucky and find something at a really good deal. One thing to note is the return policy. If you buy something and want to return it, you won't get your money back. Instead you get a receipt that serves as a giftcard that can be used whenever you make your next purchase. Also whatever you return has to have the tag or sticker on it. One major complaint that I don't really care about, no dressing rooms. read more

I thrift often, this wasn't my favorite. It was interesting how large your selection was, but that's about it. Yes, there are many "unique" items you wouldn't usually see? But nothing I haven't seen at a Goodwill or Salvation Army. The difference here is they price based off brand, so you're not actually thrifting if you're on a budget, such as me. There are sometime RARE finds like bigger brands, that can be much much less. If you're looking to up-cycle and resell, then this is a great place. Since there's so much to look fir. This place is legit. I grew up going to super cheap and awesome thrift stories in Ohio, including Unique, where you'd always find steals for $2. This is quite simply my favorite thrift store in the area. It's big, they have a ton of stuff, and there are always hidden gems if you're willing to look. Parking is insane, so be patient. Only go on Mondays--every customer gets 25% off. You can also get 25% off on Thursdays with a Customer Appreciation Card...BUT you can't sign up for the card on a Thursday so you'll need to do two trips...to get the card (any day but Thursday) and then to shop on Thursday to get the discount. You can get the card up front at the jewelry counter. There is so much stuff so if you love thrift store shopping I suggest this one. They have more stuff than Salvation; and they're tons cheaper than Goodwill. You have to be patient to find the good stuff. If you're easily overwhelmed by crowds, take anxiety meds and then go. They have EVERY THING. I've had luck with women's clothes and art. With clothes I've gotten workout tops, sport bras, casual tops, bedtime clothes and a spa robe. The shoes are clean and good brands, but I've never had luck finding my size. Also if you're looking for deals with kids clothes or jeans--they've got multiple racks.They have a furniture room kinda hidden off to the side, but most of it is super beat up. ***THERE IS NO DRESSING ROOM, so dress where you can try stuff on top of what you are wearing. They take donations and it's so easy to donate. If you're facing the building, the donate sign is to the right, down a ramp. You just dump off your stuff. If there's someone there, it takes two seconds to get a tax slip. Take some time to stroll through the small kiosks up front (not part of the thift store...they just rent space in the entrance of the building). They have junky jewelry, $1 store stuff, bras, and purses. I got fake jade jewelry there. You can do deals since it's cash only at the kiosks...for example asking for a small discount if you buy two. I can't deny how big this place is and how large their selection is: it's huge and very large! So yes, if you want to go browse for a whole day, go for it. However, it can get very messy in here and very very crowded. On their special deal days, the line can go all the way to the middle of the store and that is ridiculous. There is people here trying to get everything they can. All the clothing and items on the shelves are disorganized and strung around everywhere. I didn't even want to bring myself to browse the racks because everything was so messy and disorganized. Yes, the prices are really cheap and the selection is huge so maybe it is worth the sacrifice. But really, if you think about the time you end up spending here sorting through all this stuff, you might be better off spending just slightly more at another thrift store like goodwill or salvation army. 2020 Update: I've taken 2 stars off because of the general rudeness of the staff and lack of a/c. Unique is still the largest thrift store that I'm aware of in Northern VA and though it's not quite the "secret" it was several years ago, there's still bargains to be had now and again. BUT.... The lack of a/c on a recent visit (which I hope was temporary) made this an unpleasant shopping experience, especially with a mask during the pandemic. And I guess the staff has always been on the rude-side, but maybe the heat made everyone especially edgy? One cashier worked through a line 20 deep (no social distancing at all) while other cashiers complained that they were summoned to help out, and when I asked how I could pay for a large item of furniture without lugging it to the front, the woman who came out from the back for pricing couldn't have seemed more annoyed that I asked her to mark it "sold." Listen, I'm not expecting Nordstrom-like customer service at a thrift store. I don't mind an occasional whiff of B.O. or screaming children mowing each other down while riding bikes in the aisles (this happens literally every time I go). But I do want to shop in a climate-controlled environment and have my questions answered without overt hostility. It's gotten to the point where I'm on the fence whether it's worth making the trip to Merrifield to shop here at all. read more

This thrift store is large and has a lot of offerings. The best section maybe the books thoughts they tend to have a lot of recent publications. The toys and electronics are generally missing pieces or well used. We have bought many games though and they always have all of the pieces. read more

I I've been a great fan of this place and had lots of fun searching for bargains. I have also donated closets full of clothing and household goods in cleaning out a home. I'm happy to give them these things but they are very disrespectful in how they handle the donations. I don't have a problem with the bag of clothes being tossed in a bin, but a box of glasses should not be simply thrown in. I love this thrift shop! It is huge and full of great deals! They have just about anything that you could possibly be looking for. Clothes, furniture, shoes, linens, small appliances, housewares, jewelry, holiday items, and a huge wall of "miscellaneous" bags (those are my favorite). I prefer to buy things secondhand to reduce my carbon footprint by recycling. I don't think this is a non-profit shop, but we have so few large scale shops like this in the area, that I don't mind because it is a full of deals! A few of the benefits are that you can return items with tags on and the receipt within 7 days and there are fitting rooms so you can try things on before you buy. In the front of the store by the registers is a nook that has some of the more expensive items like coats, video game, and handbags. Enjoy the treasure hunt! A few look-fors: It gets really toasty in there when the outside temps are high. Be sure to look over all of the clothing to make sure it doesn't have stains, rips, or holes because they don't screen for this very well. read more

I can't understand the low reviews. Gone are the insanely long lines and wait times with around 20 self checkout lanes. Their selection and turnover of inventory is insane. With a little digging this place is a gold mine. Spent $23 on everything we bought! including 4 shirts, one that retails for $50. Best kept secret of this place is the underrated housewares and kitchen ware section. Found a tiny cast iron pan for $3! A small Pyrex baking dish for $.74!! A butter keep for $1 that retails for $40, a brand new in the packaging mug that sells for $20 for $1, and a coffee holder for $2 that retails for $40! I really have to hold myself back not to buy more. Why shop for new dishes/kitchen items retail when you can get them here for pennies on the dollar. I could spend hours there and since the inventory is always changing (literally a line of cars donating on a Monday afternoon at 2pm) it seems there are always treasures to find. read more

I don't think they check the clothes and shoes at all because they were super dirty. They were trying to sell multiple Sperry's that looked like they were bathing in dirt for 10 years for $15.... I checked it out and this store is MASSIVE because of the fact that it is two thrift stores together. There is also a little market within the store and it's absolutely nuts. I spent 3 hours there and left with a lot of lovely pieces. There wasn't that much vintage stuff, but there was a good amount of "modern" streetwear (things you would have seen in stores last season). I saw so many cute Levi jeans but decided to leave them behind because I have too many jeans! The prices were pretty cheap too! Just wish that there were fitting rooms but feel free to try on items on top of your clothes and check the fit on the various mirrors around the store. If I ever found myself starting over in life, this is the place that would furnish my new apartment. This thrift store on steroids is the bargain hunters dream. They offer shoes, clothing, household items and furniture for an extremely good price. The aisles are not cluttered. The neatly displayed racks and racks of carefully hung clothing are grouped by size. There is something from every era. I came to shop for clothing for a costume party and found a variety of pieces. We also picked up a few items for the house including a corded princess phone. The cashiers were very quick and the lines were non existent. It's quite a popular place on the weekend. read more
