Prague is full of little shops tucked in passageways between buildings--this lends a fantastic, magical quality when exploring the city--you never know what gems you'll encounter. Of course G-maps ruins the spontaneity of stumbling onto these places on your own, though I have to say it helped me find this lovely cafe!
On a weekday morning around 9am there were a handful of other customers when I walked in, mostly enjoying coffee sitting outside at the approximately a dozen tables spread out along the covered portico. The interior felt a bit cavernous with concrete arched ceilings and a stone-tiled back wall. Inside there were 3-4 tables in the main room with the baked goods, prepared foods and drinks displays and ordering counter, and what looked to be a separate small room with seating.
The cakes and pastries laid out on the display looked wonderful--it was really hard to decide! I thought about getting apple strudel, but ended up going with the makový závin 65 CZK ($2.80 USD), a traditional Czech poppyseed roll that has similar variations among several Eastern European countries. The outside is a flaky (though not crispy) crust, with a filling made of poppyseed paste sweetened with sugar and evaporated milk, the top is sprinkled with powdered sugar. This filling reminded me of sesame seed paste that's commonly found in East Asian desserts, it had a similar nuttiness though slightly different fragrance--delicious! If anything it was quite a large serving of this to eat in one sitting and I kinda wished I had ordered a coffee to go with it.
Aside from pastries they had slices of cake, wraps, sandwiches and salads, and some warm breakfast items like eggs and quiche. Service was friendly and I was able to get by in English. Cash or chipped cards accepted, a bathroom is upstairs via a small escalator and requires a key from the staff to access.
All in all terrific and I would go back in a heartbeat to try some other items! read more
