We went to Ukiyo with the glowing recommendation of my son's roommate, who joined my 21 year old son, my wife and me for dinner. The two of them split each of the 4 different buns offered ($10-$13 for an order of two). I ordered the ramen with duck confit ($18). My wife ordered the diver scallops ($10) and the chilled peanut noodles ($12). We split a bottle of Tyku Benehana sake. The boys greatly enjoyed the buns which were light, airy and tender. I feel that the fillings were sparse for the price. They were basically crispy tofu with kimchi, pork belly with hoisin, wagyu beef with himitsu, and shrimp with miso tartar sauce. I tasted a small bite of the pork belly, tofu and the beef. I found the sauces to be unremarkable. The portions were also too small too really enjoy more than one good bite leaving mostly bun for the last whole bite. My ramen was disappointing. I've made a better broth from roasted chicken bones in an afternoon. I expect a rich complex broth from a ramen restaurant. I love duck leg confit and the portion in the bowl was tasty. However, it was just a boneless part of the thigh, maybe two ounces. The featured vegetable was two large bok choy bulbs that were obviously not simmered in the broth but added to my bowl. They were inedibly tough. I reported this to the waitress and she asked me to place the bulbs on my side plate so she could show them to the chef. She returned with two smaller tender bok choy bulbs for me to place in my bowl. The duck broth was supposed to be shoyu based, which basically is using soy sauce to add umami. But the broth needed help so I asked for some chili oil to brighten the flavor. That chili paste was the most delicious taste of the meal. I actually took the leftover paste back to our rented condo on Tybee Island to flavor my breakfast eggs in the morning. My wife did enjoy the scallops and peanut noodles. The two scallops were perfectly prepared with a nice sear. The peanut sauce for the noodles was tasty but too sweet for me. I didn't criticize the meal because the boys so obviously enjoyed it. So, All in all, my party enjoyed the meal but for $175, excluding the tip, we should not have been hungry an hour later (of course, 21 year old men are always hungry-they stopped at Arby's for second dinner). For me, I have much better ramen at a local food truck for $10 that is filled with vegetables and protein. read more

When a restaurant is touting itself as a Japanese restaurant that offers menu items such as sushi, rice bowls, and ramen there area few fundamental things to ensure are done properly. Rice and Broth. That was not the case at this restaurant. What this appeared to be is an attempt to do too many things and not be really good at any of them. I will say that my hat is off to whom ever is preparing the Bao and Garden sections of the menu. Everything we ordered from those two sections were on point. Unfortunately, that is about as far as the good experience went. The ribs were too salty, the rice was gelatinous (either not washed enough or too much water), and preparation of the sushi roll was poorly done (fell apart and did not present well). To compound this negative dining experience, our server was relatively new and it appeared that he was thrown to the wolves. He had a full section and was not doing a good job of managing his tasks. However, the management nor other staff member stepped in to support him and it was clear he was drowning. I felt sorry for him, but it also diminished our experience when we ran out of water or did not see him for over 20-min at a time. Our total time dining should have been about 30-40 minutes less than it was due to the long delays. I would probably not recommend this restaurant, at least not on a busy Saturday night. read more

We came in with a reservation but had to wait more than 15 minutes just to be seated with no preparation... water took another 5 minutes to arrive, and when we finally ordered, the appetizer took at least 30 minutes to arrive. The tofu was as hard as a rock with bland flavor, and the karage was okay. We also ordered 4 tonkatsu ramen which was 21 dollars each, but it didn't arrive until another 30 minutes passed. The egg was very unusual and didn't really look like an egg, the meat didn't taste very fresh, and the broth was very salty, and the noodles were alright. Overall a very displeasing experience, would not recommend - took way too much time and the food was mediocre and overpriced. This total process took AN HOUR AND HALF, absolutely ridiculous. read more

We came to eat dinner at Ukiyo while visiting family who live in Savannah. A few items to note 1. It was a Monday and the restaurant wasn't busy 2. We put our entree orders in early after apps 3. We waited 2+ hours to get our dinner 4. We waited almost an hour for apps. APPS! 5. Upon almost finishing our meal we were told by staff that a large party was coming and we needed to leave. God forbid trying to eat here on a busy night if it's this terrible on a weekday slow evening. The server was knowledgeable and mildly apologetic. Food was good but in NO WAY worth the wait or overall attitude of staff. I can't believe how long we waited for food just to be pushed out before we were done. I read the reviews and had to try this place. First, I wasn't floored by the service, I can't put my finger on it but it felt impersonal. Regardless, we tried several items as their concept is small plates. We started with the peanut noodles---EXCELLENT. We also had the cabbage pancake which was inventive and I would recommend (although I think it's too much for s as small plate). We also got the pork belly bao buns which were super good---they weren't technically bao buns more like a bao taco. Our last plate was the lobster magma sushi roll. I can't say we enjoyed it. While there was lobster we couldn't taste it because it was mashed by a ton of spicy sauce. The rolls themselves were super tiny , in my opinion when you order tempura shrimp and lobster you should see the pieces clearly and the sauce comes second...it just wasn't $24 worth. The food is super delicious and the service is amazing. They were so nice and everything was brought out super quick. The sharable menu items aren't exactly sharable since they are so small which isn't necessarily worth it for the price. We got the smashed cucumbers and it was $8 and not even a full cucumber. I got the cold peanut noodles though and it was a sharable menu item and it was more than enough for me. I would ask the server about the size of the dish before you order. The music was a bit loud, but if that doesn't bother you, then it will be a great place to get something to eat. The outside seating was very nice and comfortable as well. read more

Had to make a last minute reservation for a big group of 15 during graduation weekend and the staff at Ukiyo were incredible! Angel was so helpful and accommodating, beyond anything I would've expected. I had a taste of several dishes on the menu and can say the food was amazing, delicious and beautifully served. Plus it all came out so quickly! Easily takes a spot in my top two restaurants in Savannah. I will definitely be going back to try the rest of the menu :) read more

This place is great. We changed our reservations 2-3 times one the same day. They kept saying "no problem". Place was packed. Seems like a new build out (modern Asian decor). Service was great (from hostess, to bartender, to waitress, to busser). 2x chicken ramen, 2x veggie ramen, 1 special pork belly over rice with coconut peanut curry, pork belly bun, shrimp bun, grilled shishito pepper.
