There is a lovely gift shop that I'll keep in mind if I'm ever in the area and need a little present or hostess gift :)

Jim was our tour guide and knew so much about the history of Helen. We had one other couple with us that were married the day before and we were celebrating 25 years of marriage. Everyone was so friendly! We went for family day after the fun snow the day before. It was a cold…read moreday, but still many people showed up. We got lucky abs the museum was open and free too. Normally there is an admission fee. Family day is the second Sunday of every month. My kids did a scavenger hunt, went through the exhibits, outside to the cabins, watched the live gun show, and enjoyed the family activities in the hall. The staff dressed up and were so fun and nice. My daughter enjoyed the lady who taught them a dance. We loved dressing up in clothes from the colonal times. Plenty of seating at their outdoor amphitheater. Exhibits have many interactive stations for kids. Our visit superceded my expectations. They have their own parking lot as well. Btw, I wasn't sure if they would be open because of the snow, so I sent a message on Instagram, not expecting a reply the day, but I got a reply in less than five minutes. I was over the moon. I was so hesitant to drive the hour while uncertain if they were going to be open or not, so that was a huge relief when I got a response! That's great representation!

This is the military training ground depicted in the book and TV series Band of Brothers, and you…read morecan still see and enjoy a lot of the original camp here! It was used for various purposes after the war and gradually decreased in size and footprint until nearly totally abandoned, but in recent years they have been working to restore a portion of the camp to a near-original status. There are a couple barracks standing - one made from the original materials (if my memory serves me, they dissassembled one that was standing somewhere nearby and rebuilt it here) and one building that is made from hard materials and thus still stands. They moved their Douglass C-47 from the museum to this site so you can also see that. The Camp is gated off, but there is a sign with a phone number on the gate which you can call and someone will come let you in. They are in the process of doing a lot of renovation work on the camp and I believe they hope to have it as a functioning extension of the museum in coming years. The other neat thing about this area is you can drive around and see other old parts of the camp. There are old fire hydrants, old concrete pads, and other paraphenalia sitting all around the original camp footprint.

The city of Roswell has 3 preserved antebellum houses open for public tours. We stopped by all 3…read moreone Saturday afternoon in February. All are located within a 1/2-mile radius, and 2 are literally within about 200 yards of each other. Our second stop was at Barrington Hall. It is located across Hwy 120 from Bulloch Hall, a bit closer to Roswell Road. They have a small parking lot out front. Like the others, there is no fee here. We again wandered up to the house's front facade (which faces away from the parking lot towards Hwy 120) entered via the front door. The docent on duty was again friendly and just asked for our zip code and how we'd heard about the venue. You are then free to wander the house via whatever route you like. Most rooms have a sign with a 4-digit code. You call a phone number (the same one used at the other 2 houses) and enter successive codes as you proceed. For each code, there is an accompanying description of the room's historical context and of its furnishings. These mansions all seemed to follow the same basic floorplan - a central linear hallway with 2 or 3 rooms off each side and a staircase at the end. This house was a bit smaller than Bulloch Hall, but had slightly more furnishings. This home also had more of a formal garden in the back. If you only had time to tour one house of the 3, I'd still begin with Bulloch Hall. However, this place was nice to visit if you have another 30 - 45 minutes.

We entered the wrong door but the gracious woman who is a docent welcomed us warmly! She gave a grand tour of the home with many interesting stories about its former residents. We went to a section to hike that we never would have tried (as it's on the Highlands Cashiers Land Trust) that was a beautiful hike with amazing views. Justin was a delightful guide, providing a rich history of the area. We also enjoyed talking geology with Justin, who was a wealth of information. Even if you've been to Highlands & Cashiers many times, treat yourself to a Highlands Excursion to see the beautiful waterfalls, mountain ranges & more. You won't regret it! He was very attentive but with a relaxed style while keeping safety a priority. Our adventure started with a briefing on the bikes, our planned route and then a practice spin around the parking lot. His knowledge of local history and landmarks was impressive and he was also willing to share his first hand information on hiking and kayaking as well as interesting stores about his life and family.
