This is one of the places where we come to celebrate special occasions, so of course we had to mark our seventh year anniversary here, and it was as wonderful as always. We had the privilege of sitting at the sushi bar so that we were able to enjoy watching our chef Mitchell create our meals. We were seated next to two employees who were experimenting with the new dishes in order to be able to explain them to future guests as well as some newcomers and everyone was clearly enjoying their evening. As always, the dishes are unique and delicious, and the staff is always happy, professional, knowledgeable and truly dedicated to their craft and customers. My friend and I had a great evening at Uchiko on a Friday night. We made reservations ahead of time with no problem. The restaurant only offers valet which is free of charge, and you can tip by card if you scan the QR code which is very convenient. It was a cold evening so I was happy we weren't seated by the door catching a draft, but we were by another back door that kept opening and letting cold air in so that was not fun! We've always heard about the good happy hour deals here. We asked our server how much the happy hour omakase was and we were surprised it was only $107 for 2 of us! I was expecting to pay that price for just one of us, so we immediately opted in. Since it was an omakase they do spread the courses out a bit, so we were there for about 2 hours. Everything we had was delicious, I only wish there were more nigiri/sushi courses! But I understand they do have more on the menu and the tasting was to try every kind of dish they offer. After the courses were done we decided to get a sushi roll that was new, not even on the menu yet. We both really liked it, and then we swapped the dessert for the Milk and Cereal dish. I went to Uchiko with my partner after hearing really great things about it, and unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed. The restaurant itself was a really cool ambiance. It was a fun spot for a date night, and they were absolutely slammed. We were seated about 15 minutes late for our reservation, and I had gotten a text before our res that there's a possibility that our table isn't ready, so they may ask us to grab a drink at the bar first, so it feels like it's not uncommon that people are seated late for their res. Our waitress was really nice and explained the menu really well to us. The best part was that the agemono dishes (the fried ones) could all be done in half portions, which was perfect since we only had two people and wanted to try the squash and the brussels sprouts. We ended up order the sunomono, brussels and squash from the agemono menu, take nabe from the hot dishes, scallop crudo from the cold, and a smattering from nigiri/tosoyu. They were sold out of the sunomono, but they did end up gifting us a small little gem salad which was really delicious and really fun to eat! The squash was probably my favorite dish of the night. It was super crispy and still light, and I loved the dipping sauce. The brussels were good but I found them to be a bit oily for me. The scallop crudo was good but nothing incredible, and the take nabe was good as well! It had lots of flavor, and I'm a sucker for anything in a stone bowl. The nigiri and tosoyu were a bit disappointing, particularly the tosoyu. On the menu, the prices are per piece, which is different from other sushi restaurants where the prices listed are typically for two pieces. I liked that the nigiri came with their own sauces/dressing, which made it feel like omakase style sushi. The prices for the tosoyu felt a little egregious. Some of the pieces were over $15 for one piece, and the one I had didn't necessarily feel like it was worth that price. The main downside I would say is that pacing of the dishes was incredibly slow. There were times we waited over 20 minutes for the next course even when the next course was just nigiri. We ended up having to ask for the check a bit early since we had another reservation to make. "I deal in human fulfillment." -- Joel Goodson, "Risky Business" While Uchiko is in a very different business than the one operated by Tom Cruise's character in the movie, I think his self-description of the mission might be an apt motto for this restaurant. Dining at Uchiko is an experience larger than just consuming delectable food. The lively atmosphere, artful presentation, and the friendly collaboration with your server combine to make a visit here a uniquely fulfilling adventure. We decided to have dinner here on short notice and so we could only get a happy hour reservation. That turned out to be a fortuitous decision as an early arrival lets you watch the restaurant come to life as diners arrive. The menu is lengthy and chock full of creativity, infusing traditional Japanese choices with flavors drawn from many cultures. The small plates format, Japanese tapas if you will, is a very smart means to the end that whisks you along a tasty culinary journey. Our server, Rachel, delivered stellar service and was our guide on that journey sharing prescient intel as we meandered our way through the menu. Through our conversation and some of our own choices she was able to discern our likes and make appropriate menu recommendations. We started with the Ko salad, with slender carved stalks of daikon clustered with baby romaine leaves, gently resting in a shallow pool of creamy, peppery dressing. Using the leaves as a spoon you could scoop a bit of dressing to create a flavorful bite. I had to restrain myself from licking the bowl (as I did several times that evening), it was that good. The hama chili is a winner, matching thinly sliced pristine yellowtail with wedges of orange and dipped in the ponzu and chili sauce that married the sweet and hot with buttery fish. We moved on to a couple of maki rolls, the P38 and the ham and eggs. P38 has hamachi in a classic combination with green onion (negi) and joined by avocado. The seasoning brings in citrus brightness along with a bit of heat and salt for a great pop of flavor. The ham and egg maki pairs deep-fried pork belly with egg custard, which is then dipped into the shishito aioli for some more peppery goodness. The nigiri sushi (we had maguro and aji) are small portions but have a great balance of rice, fish, and seasoning. Needless to say, all of the fish selections were absolutely, unquestionably fresh. Our server also brought us a surprise: we had wanted tobiko (flying fish roe) nigiri but were informed it was out, and then later she brought some to us, on the house no less. This variety of the tiny eggs featured golden, luminous orbs of creamy sweetness with just a bit of saltiness. We also sampled tempura with the kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) and nasu (eggplant). Tempura is challenging to do well and these were the best examples I've seen in a restaurant outside of Japan. Battered lightly, the crust on these was airy and not greasy and yet the vegetable flesh was cooked exactly right. With some shishito aioli it formed a harmonious combination. Even though we were stuffed, we couldn't leave without trying a dessert and settled on the banana cake. The cake was shaped as a wheel with slices of fruit sitting atop and accompanied by caramel sauce and kahlua flavored ice cream-you had to scoop a bit of each to build each bite and enjoy the gathering of flavors. It was a great ending to a great meal. Yes, the food at Uchiko is amazing, but perhaps what is even more impressive is the service. Unlike your typical dining experience, each dish represents its own little vignette, unique and yet all of the dishes together form a summary greater than the individual players. The pace, rhythm and timing of the presentation is well managed: a dish is set before you, and after you have enjoyed it, staff glides in to clear the platters while the next entree is served. The challenge of successfully maintaining this cadence throughout a busy dinner service is a testament to a well-oiled and attentive cadre of servers. Moreover, the servers are knowledgeable and helpful guides to the menu and are invested in making sure you enjoy your meal. It reminds me a bit of my best travels in Japan where I could work with a willing itamae-san and through his broken English and my broken Japanese we were able to fashion together my dinner. Conversations usually featured comments such as "this fish is really fresh, just came in today," or "I bet you've never tried this." These discussions always resulted in an incredibly great meal. I suspect Chef Cole's intent was to bring that sort of collaboration into the dining experience at Uchiko but even if that's not true, the end result remains fulfillment. Absolutely loved this place! My friend and I went here for a girl date and included in our reservation details that we were celebrating our friendship anniversary. They comped our cocktails, gave us a free appetizer, and even ended our meal with complimentary champagne! The quality of the food, drinks, and the service were all impeccable. I don't eat seafood so I really appreciated that they have a vegetarian menu with so many amazing options. I got the Yasai Nuta, which was a delicious blend of avocado, blueberry, lemon dashi, and pistachio - think deconstructed, leafless avocado salad. It was the perfect start to my meal and definitely left me wanting more. For sushi, I went with the Komaki Roll, and ordered some nigiri as well - the nasu and kinoko. Highly recommend any of these options! My friend is a huge seafood/sushi lover and went with the somakase (server curated tasting menu) and told the server what she liked and didn't like and they catered the items according to her pallet. Managed to get an Uchiko reservation during the Formula 1 weekend for my 1 year anniversary with my boyfriend. We were seated at the sushi bar right by the chefs and were immediately attended to. Our sushi chef was so kind and personable and we immediately got to chatting about F1, Austin, and life in Dallas! It was such a nice intimate experience to enjoy some sushi over light conversation with the staff. We ordered the crunchy tuna roll, soft shell crab roll, unagi nigiri, gyutoro, and kinoko. Nigiri was solid and almost buttery and melted in my mouth. We saw someone else order the gyutoro and were tempted ourselves, so we ended up ordering it. I do wish that the fish pieces were a bit bigger. The rolls were definitely untraditional, but still tasty! Very unique ingredient combinations for the soft shell crab roll -- honey crisp apple and nước mắm. You don't often see fish sauce in sushi! We got two pieces of nigiri on the house since we were celebrating an anniversary! Very sweet touch. Lastly, we ordered sorbet. I'm visiting Austin and I wanted to take my niece for a bit of a splurge. I couldn't get a reservation online until 8:45 but we took a chance and walked in at 7:30 on a Saturday night and the very gracious hosts seated us within 15 minutes. It's a gorgeous place with an extensive menu, but we were a little overwhelmed by all the choices. Our excellent server Brandy asked us what we liked and what we wanted to spend and then built us a custom tasting menu and she made incredible choices. Every dish was amazing and though not exactly traditional sushi if you're an American, I was happy to just shove things in my mouth without completely processing all the ingredients. It was a very special night that neither of us will forget. I had heard the milk and cereal dessert was not to be missed and even though we were full I ordered it, totally forgetting that my niece isn't eating dairy right now. I can't believe I didn't try Uchiko sooner. Anna was a fantastic server and the food was amazing. My boyfriend and I wanted to keep the bill around $200, so I was worried we wouldn't get enough food. I had to unbutton my pants on the way home. We're pretty indecisive, so we took Anna up on her offer to curate a menu for us based on our budget and likes/dislikes. Every single bite of the 9-course dinner was perfect. We got all our favorites (most of which we didn't mention - it felt like she was reading our minds), plus plenty of unique things that I never would've thought to order but turned out to be incredible. She checked in regularly to see what we liked so she could pick the next courses. Our feedback probably wasn't very helpful because we loved everything. I mentioned my gluten intolerance in the reservation. Anna addressed it as soon as we were seated and went over the gluten-free options. The vast majority of the menu items were either gluten-free or could be modified. It really stood out to me that the food runners all specified that each dish they served was gluten-free. I didn't have to spend the meal worrying about miscommunications. Our experience was on par with the Michelin-star restaurants I used to go to when I lived in NYC, but for a fraction of the price. Obviously the food was perfect. But what really set this experience apart was the service. I can't say enough good things about Anna, the bartenders, and the rest of the FOH staff. As if Uchiko needs another 5 star review... I'm an LA transplant (ha ha I know as if atx needs more of those), and for those that know, our favorite spot to eat sushi there is Nobu/matsuhisa. I thought that was the best of the best. I thought I'd be crying and dreaming about sushi by moving here. Boy was I wrong, Uchiko is definitely on par, and has dishes even better than Nobu! The only thing I miss about Nobu is the vibe (especially the Malibu location) but the food and phenomenal service more than makes up for it. I'm pretty sure all the best servers in Austin work at Uchiko. The complimentary valet is also super convenient! We usually try a couple new things with each visit, but here is our favorite go-to that we order every single time: -edamame: it's seriously the best we've ever had. Also, it's always good to eat edamame before sushi for that blood sugar spike (iykyk) -hama chili -sake toro -p-38 -take nabe: oh this is so divine and unique. It's a warm bowl of comfort. I trust the quality of the fish and love how fresh it is every time. We've been here about a dozen times, both as a family and also just as date night. Let me say, I have many friends who say this is their absolute favorite restaurant in Austin, so maybe I had too high of expectations. Loved the complimentary parking, use it! Saw one sweet girl walk in covered in sweat, all along the back of her dress, pretty sure safe to say they didn't use the valet. The valet team was awesome too, was especially impressed with the girl. Host staff was nice, we were 30 min early so they tried to see what they could do to get us seated earlier. Bartenders were great! She made some suggestions as we normally drink liquor and this is basically a sake only menu. To the important part, the food. Mixed reviews from my husband and I. Some of the bites were mind blowing, just incredible like the short rib nigiri. While others were big let downs for us like the Tiger something roll. We found that the menu wasn't descriptive enough as these rolls were very different from what we are used to. It was like a salad in one bite and heavy on like a vinegar. It was really hard for me to get down and we couldn't finish. From the description I was expecting a heavy on the meat and grilled green onion so like a somewhat warm hearty roll but it was a very light salad roll. If there is a next time, we will ask more questions for sure. Service was excellent minus the long wait we had after we got seated but it happens. Because it was a celebration they brought out two pieces of nigiri and we passed on desert but she gave us a $25 GC to come back and try it next time. Another reason for 4 stars was the selection of fish. No sea urchin, they didn't even have unagi just seemed to be lacking a lot of the things we wanted. I tried this place during our family vacation in Austin. Our reservation was for 6:30pm, due to traffic we didn't make it, they quickly worked with us & accommodated our party of 6 to 8pm. I went on a Monday during happy hour to take advantage of their more affordable menu. I wasn't super hungry when I went, which was a good idea since the plates are pretty small. I wouldn't suggest coming here when you're starving. I treated it like more of a culinary experience instead of a source of sustenance. Overall, I felt that some plates were great and others missed the mark. Things I really enjoyed: sake crudo (it's a tiny dish but has the most amazing salmon), gyudon (kimchi fried rice with super soft beef) and for dessert, milk and cereal (delicious toasted milk ice cream and chocolate mousse, you have to try this one!). It really is as good as everyone says it is. I wanted to do the omakase but it's actually created for two people ($200+). I was with a group and not everyone wanted to do Omakase. I'm not disappointed that we didn't because we ended up ordering different things to our liking. My favorite items were the raw and grilled oysters, crying tiger roll, the tako and the hama. My ultimate favorite thing was the jasmine cream dessert, mostly because I've never had anything like it and the flavors of jasmine cream and cilantro surprisingly tasted extraordinarily delicious together - I'm not exaggerating. I also tried the salmon toro, which was served as such a beautiful cut, and eggplant (Nasu). Great bites. I wanted to try everything. Uchi caters towards your dietary needs. One of the girls I dined in with is vegan and they made all of the items she wanted vegan. They also have a pretty decent vegetarian menu and have vegan sorbet for dessert. read more

Celebrated our anniversary dinner here. The hostess was so nice, we came without a reservation but they were still able to fit us in. Our server Erin was super knowledgeable and friendly. Even though we didn't sit at the bar for their omakase, They timed everything perfectly where one bite was after the other. They also have happy hour so we took advantage of it! If you don't order omakase, you can easily get full off the happy hour menu. A lot of options of nigiri and rolls and even desserts! I can't wait to go back. I highly recommend it. This is an experience with food that was wonderful to participate in. The servers are like well oiled machines! In a great way! Each have their own tables yet if they see one person talking to a customer the nearest person will offer to take the empty plates from that person. The atmosphere is chic and modern. This place is family style and your server will guide you through it if you need assistance. The servings are good and shareable. Everything was too notch. You know it has to be good when you don't even use soy sauce. Or even miss it! You have to be open to the presentation and the staff are very cognizant of any allergies as well. Our server was great - personable, accommodating, and even helped us avoid over-ordering an item other members of our group already ordered. Every time I come here I experience something magnificent. I've come here on three occasions, twice of which I had the Omakase, and once just for the wagyu beef on the river rock. The Omakase lead me through a beautiful ten course of fish of which was well presented, tasted immaculate, and led me through the journey of the ocean. I was truly able to explore my own sake pallet with their eclectic selection. I had a bottle of the otokoyama and the wakatake onikoroshi. "demon slayer" The otokoyama felt like drinking crisp water which was more refreshing and could enjoy on a midsummer day. The demon slayer was intense, bold and lived up to it's name. I am not sure where to start.... I think a *standing ovation* is the way to begin. Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! I went here with my friends for a birthday dinner. We were treated with birthday treat of in-house edamame for the table. And damn!! Did I just had the best edamame of my LIFE! Smoky, tasty, delicious. A must to start of the meal. Our hostess worked patiently with us as we all begin deciding our drink. She patiently walked us through our sake and cocktails options. Amazing amazing service. We even got a free tasting of sake before deciding on the bottle for the table. Our hostess went above and beyond for us. We all got different meals and they ALL were exceptional. Beautifully presented and even more decadent treat. I got soft shell crab and shag sushi and it was just *Chefs kiss*!!! Possibly, the best sushi I ever had... Uchiko has long been one of my favorite happy hour spots for sushi (and sushi in general), and I've been at least 3 times for their happy hour menu, which was recently updated. A slightly more casual spot than sister restaurant, Uchi, this is a great weeknight spot or special occasion dinner for an elevated experience and fresh, creative menu items. Everything was good quality and fresh. - Mushroom gyoza (3/5): 3 tiny, 2-bite (if that) dumplings for $10? A bit overpriced. Especially for veggies. They were flavorful and soft, and the sauce was a simple gyoza sauce. - Crispy potatoes (2.5/5): Mostly ordered these for volume in our food order. Pretty basic, smashed fingerling potatoes with seasoned salt and aioli. Wouldn't order again. - Gyudon (4/5): Good but I swear this shrunk a ton since I last ordered it. I enjoy it with the short rib! Perfectly crispy rice and getting the egg with it (for an extra $2) is worth it. - Bincho nigiri (5/5): Straightforward and refreshing. - Bluefin maki (5/5): A great roll. Always a treat when coming to Uchiko. My husband and I decided to have a date night and made reservations for Uchiko a couple days before. Since we made reservations, we didn't wait more than 5 minutes after parking to be sat at the sushi bar, watching the clockwork and beauty of behind the scenes. We started off with the Hokkaido scallop and shishito peppers. And WOW. The freshness of the scallop was amazing and the light batter but fully flavorful taste of the peppers complimented each other very very well!!! After we got the Hama chili which we tried at Uchi before, and always just as amazing. Even tempted to drink the sauce that the dish is in. After my husband and I took turns getting 2 of a variety of sushi. We started with unagi, sake toro, the blue fin!!!! Each way, we tried akami, medium fatty, and the torched fatty tuna. And wow each bluefin just melted so perfectly and made me crave more!!! An amazing sushi was the smoked ocean trout belly. WOW the Smokey flavor !! Amazing. We ended with the foie gras. Holy crap. You can't miss out of this. The Smokey, the spice, the heat, everything amazing. You really cannot skip this!!! Everything was amazing. By luck a woman who sat next to me on my flight to Austin recommended this place as a must try. She said it's the best sushi place in town, and they have great service. And my best chance of getting in would be happy hour. Well, she was right on all accounts. Service, food and ambiance, I would rank them in that order. We got two seats at the (wine) bar. The bartender/server could not be more helpful and friendly. She was on first name basis with a number of the patrons there. She gave us recommendations then some free sample appetizers to try from the happy hour menu, which had many options. My favorite was bluefin mame. It was tapas discounted, unbelievable how everything was so delicious. I would go back there just because of their outstanding service, but the food was amazing as well. Atmosphere was lively without being too loud. Really enjoyed our meal there. Will be visiting again, hopefully soon. read more
