I place my outgoing mail in my mailbox with the red flag up by 7:30 AM. It appears that if she does not have mail to deliver to my address, she does not bother to drive down my short street to pick up my outgoing mail. I am elderly, do not drive due to vision loss & have no way to get to the main Post Office on Hwy, 67 (Tallahassee St. ) On several occasions, I have received the mail of others. I will keep searching in order to find to whom I should file an official complaint, Today, for example, I spotted her delivery car on the other side of Tillie Miller Park. Why in the world she could not have gone less than a block to pick up my mail is a wonder. My mail consisted of bill payments that must go out. That woman makes good money for a job performance which is pitiful.

I arrived during hours when the lighthouse shop was closed but there's still some stuff to see outside. It's a nice park setting with parking, some picnic shelters and even a playground. The Crooked River Light was built in 1895 and replaced three separate lighthouses on Dog Island that were destroyed by storms. The lighthouse was painted in its current color scheme in 1901, the lower half white and the upper half red with a black lantern room. This lighthouse is currently active with an acrylic glass at the top that is a replica of the original Fresnel lens. I have recently taken to collecting lighthouses along my travels, keeping them in a Yelp collection at https://www.yelp.com/collection/GLWJhPZloUBCLUFSYgLw4g. Please choose a different date or place - uhm this is a historic marker, it's information on a stick. Seriously, sometimes something so significant happens in an area or specific location that it becomes historically documented and there are societies that ensures these sites are recognized and never forgotten - I for one love these markers and find them irresistible, I must read them when I find them. I wish all these plaques were displaying fun stuff, but history hasn't always been fun we can't change history although it seems some want to minimize it or cover it up, wouldn't it be so amazing if all newly erected marker were educating us on all things good. I'm okay with accurately depicting factually correct information we should all want to learn from the past so we never forget. I salute those that have bravely served our country and have defended our freedom with their lives, it's unfortunate we have lost so many in struggles and conflicts that's probably could have been resolved by other means, but the facts are the facts and the decisions made here has changed the lives of all of us. Allied military leaders knew that casualties on D-Day could be staggeringly high. Historians are still calculating the death toll to this day it's seems to be an impossible task, estimates range between 4,000 - 12,000 US soldiers I think one is too many and all deserve to be honored...

This marker is hard to miss as it is black with white lettering and it stands in front of a…read morebrilliant white building. It is in excellent condition and there is street parking. The marker reads, "The Franklin Guards, a company of Infantry organized in Apalachicola in 1884 by J.H. Coombs and Fred Betterfield, erected the first building in the city to be used solely as an armory in 1898. Made of simulated brick, it was located at the corner of High Street and Center Avenue. On May 25, 1900, fire destroyed it and much of the downtown. On July 3, 1900, a committee was formed to build a new armory. The facility was designed by Frank and Thomas Lockwood of Columbus, Georgia and constructed by John H. Hecker. It was completed in 1901 at a cost of $12,000. The replacement armory features real brick walls and a gable roof with a gable parapet. Solid massing of the walls, slit windows, and a corner tower that resembles a medieval watchtower make this an imposing military structure. Fort Coombs is a unique example of "fortress architecture" in Florida, and has served as the military and social nexus of Apalachicola for more than a century. Units stationed here have been mobilized for service in World Wars I and II, the Gulf War and the War with Iraq. Bronze plaques located on the exterior front wall memorialize the names of generations of Apalachicola and Franklin County citizens who have served their State and Nation."
