I was able to choose from several time slots the one that worked best for me. I arrived 40 minutes early and discovered I needed to wait to check-in at the kiosk no earlier than 30 minutes. So while I waited to check in I filled out the DL renewal form. Thirty minutes before my appointment I checked in at the kiosk which was easy, and available in both English and Spanish. Then I waited about 15 minutes when my number was called. The agent who attended me was courteous and professional. She took my application, made copies of my documentation (ID, birth certificate, passport), asked me a few questions, took my fingerprints, my picture, signature and the fee, and I walked out with my temporary new driver's license (the official one arrives my mail) precisely at the time my appointment was scheduled to begin. Everything was clean, orderly, the employees were helpful, and the process was easy. Way to go, TX DPS!

U.S. border crossing to Reynosa, Mexico…read more Reynosa is a town that has grown on the opposite side of town. They have an HEB, Starbucks, Home Depot, Peter Piper Pizza, 7-11's, and more. While there really isn't much to do here, you can drive over to Progresso and use a toll road. If you live here, there is a nice cineplex and some good Mexican restaurants. When crossing over you do see armed agents on the Mexican crossing section, but I feel this is for one's own protection. You see this at most country border crossing from Europe to the United States. There are fewer lanes than the Reynosa/Hidalgo crossing, but usually it is sufficient unless it is a Mexican holiday or a day when more shoppers from Monterrey are coming into the US. I prefer this particular border crossing because you don't have all the vendors and others accosting you as at the Reynosa/Hidalgo bridge. It is a more pleasant wait in line. Be prepared to wait in line, especially during peak hours. That's just the nature of international crossing these days. Around Christmas time it could take hours as so many shoppers are coming to the US. The border agents have a tough job as there are so many trying to sneak illegal things or people across. But they are there for our protection, generally do a great job, and deserve our respect. If you want respect, be respectful and answer their questions.

This post office closes too soon. Most people work from 4-5 PM. However, during the week, this post…read moreoffice closes its doors at 4:30. Now, this would be acceptable if at least you could access your PO Box after 4:30 but instead, the whole building is closed. Other post offices stay open for longer time in the business section. When that closes, you can still access the PO Box areas and retrieve envelop mail. That isn't the case here in Hidalgo. Another reason why this is not an ideal post office box of choice is that on Saturdays, the opening business hours behind the counter (where you pick up bigger boxes) are past 10:00 AM. The building opens at 8, but if you have a package to pick up or ship, you can't conduct business with an actual person until post 10:00AM. This makes the post office unsuitable for business transactions in most cases. Because Hidalgo is a small town, I don't foresee this changing.

The Hidalgo Pump House Heritage and Discovery Center is a great addition to this small town. This…read morelocation is being changed, remodeled, and repurposed to become more of a tourist attraction, but being kept with antique architecture that gives it a quaint but welcoming look. The pump house itself has a private parking lot and you can park for free. It's also free to walk around the outside of the pump house which provide many picture opportunities. However, if you are seeking this place out for event pictures (like a wedding photoshoot) then you do need to go to the front desk and ask for permission. I don't know, but I would imagine there might be some sort of fee involved. Though not quite a botanical garden, there are plenty of flora to look at, take pictures of, and enjoy. I have seen some pedal boats and kayaks in the river, but I have yet to see the business actually running, but I usually go after closing hours when walking as part of my exercise route. There is a small gazeebo that ends up at the river and other interesting paths to follow. A juxtaposition can be found once you bump into an actual fence that divides the US side of the river to Mexico's side of the river. This is a great place to propose to someone. They have an outdoor auditorium in which they will show free movies for children. Since you can access this location after hours, proposing to someone here makes it a beautiful reminder for your partner. Once you are done enjoying the sights, walking outside the pump house now offers the opportunity to frequent some of the local businesses that are growing around the area. There is a place really close by called Tikis which sells Mexican snacks, a tea house that has some sandwhiches and other meals, and a block further down is a crêperie called Creparis. Most of these businesses, though, close by 9:00 PM so plan ahead if you want to visit those locations. Also, since they are local emerging businesses and not chain restaurants, some don't offer the choice of paying with a credit card. I suggest you take at least 20 dollars cash with you. Over all, your night will be memorable and more so if you come during the Christmas time where they decorate entire blocks leading to this location. Enjoy.

I really like that they offer DVD rentals not only educational but also drama and action as well as a few others. They have over 200 computers at your disposal, with your free library card of course. This is a great place to print copies, system is very user friendly nice and simple. They also have private rooms if you have baby's that won't be still or for tutoring as well, there is a computer in each room, very useful. Staff is very polite and attentive willing to answer your every question. This is a great location I invite everyone in the area to stop by.

You'll find large spacious work areas throughout the building with a total of 250 PCs with 6 PCs to a computer area. One of my favorite areas is the very functional, private study rooms for conference calls or study groups. Fabulous! The library has meeting rooms they reserve to civic, cultural or educational groups. The children's area is comfortable, fun and a happy environment with numerous great books, children's PCs on size appropriate tables and reading zones. The library offers a free summer kids lunch program which was very popular and life saving for many families. The staff is friendly, very helpful and extremely accessible as they move around the library. The restrooms and building are close to immaculate with not even a spot of dust on the bookshelves I visited. The windows and PC screens are not covered in fingerprints and PC keyboards are spotless and dust free. The size and 3 spoke layout keeps congestion to a minimum and gives you a sense of space and privacy. It appears many people spend a large portion of their day here since it's such a comfortable work space and a great place to get in out of the Valley heat. I noticed several folks work in the lounge/break area all day. It's a nice size room full of natural light with the large windows. The room is set up with several large tables along with soda and snack vending machines. You're allowed to bring in your own food and drink or bring in fast food but all food and drink must be consumed in the lounge area of course. Several folks work in the lounge area for hours, needing coffee next to them while on their laptops and requiring their cell phones while they work. You'll find very informative exhibits along with floor displays covering the history of the Speer Memorial Library. When the City of Mission needed space to build the library in 1976 they ask Juanita Speer Farley if she would sell her property. She said no to the property sell. As a memorial to her parents, she presented the people of Mission the deed to her inherited two acres, flower-filled property on 12th Street which her father, George, had acquired when he first came to Mission. Juanita had one stipulation for the city before releasing the deed to the City of Mission. That the family cat, Morton Downey's, grave must never be disturbed. You ask who Morton Downey, the cat is. Morton Downey was the beloved cat of Mr. and Mrs. George Speer and Juanita named after Morton Downey, the silver-voiced, radio, Irish tenor of the Forties. When Kitty Morton Downey died, his small body was buried in their sunny field filled with wild flowers owned by the Speer family. An anacua tree was planted to shade the tiny grave of Kitty Morton Downey. The tree has grown and spread its branches as though aware it had a duty to perform and the field full of wild flowers brought peace to the family. Years past, the couple passed and the town of Mission grew. When Juanita was asked to sell the property she presented the property to the City of Mission with the only stipulation their cat, Morton Downey's grave must never be disturbed and the Speer Memorial Library became a reality. Take a moment and walk down the sidewalk to the corner of 12th Street. You can visit the small white marker bearing the name of Morton Downey, dated January 19, 1964 surrounded by shrubs under the anacua tree still guarding this small plot under its spreading branches. Kitty Morton Downey will sleep, undisturbed, under the anacua tree for years and years to come. What a generous gesture of love to the City of Mission and a touching story to share with your family and children for decades to come.

The study rooms provide a quiet and sound ambient for studying. Their wide selection of books is good for when you want to check out or come on your free time and have a good read. The staff are always welcoming and so helpful with all needs and inquiries. All in all, comfort is by far the best way to describe this place.
