We stopped at Typhoon for the lunch special since I was in town visiting my sis and missed walking up and down beautiful downtown Middletown. The restaurant is very clean and beautifully decorated with plenty of seating. We were greeted and showed to our table immediately. We were given complimentary glasses of water and given a few minutes to look over the menu. I decided on the cashew nut lunch special with combination meat and plain fried rice, my sis got the green curry special with beef and jasmine rice, while my mom got the crispy duck dish. Both my sis and I also ordered the Thai iced bubble coffee. The coffee is really delicious and the boba gives it a different texture. This is probably the only place I've ever seen boba offered with iced coffee. The service is wonderful and the ladies are very friendly, checked on us often and refilled our waters. They seem like they enjoy working at Typhoon, which is really nice to see. Our food was served hot and fresh and my cashew nut dish was very delicious, with enough spice that builds up with each bite. But, for the price of about ten bucks for a lunch special, I expect more meat in my dish. The food was great and fresh vegetables and ingredients were used, but for my combination meat I got one piece of beef, one piece of chicken, one piece of pork and one shrimp. It was mostly a vegetable stir fry dish. My sister's curry had a good balance of meat and veggies in it, and my mom's dish had plenty of duck. Typhoon is a good place for a date maybe. The service is wonderful and the ingrdients used are very fresh. But the prices are a bit high for what you get and may not be the first choice if you want Thai food AND on a budget. read more

We ordered drunken noodles, it's not the wider noodles. At first thought they made a mistake and gave us pad thai. However, it has the drunken noodle veggies. I have visited at least three times and each time I go, I find that I am disappointed. This time, we went for a work outing so I obliged. I went with a classic Pad Thai with chicken. The portions are pretty decent for a lunch special, but the flavors are just over-the-top in the not-so-good kind of way. The noodles were drenched in a sauce that was simply too tangy. What little chicken there was happened to be pale and mostly dry. The dish came with a heaping amount of crushed peanuts and bean sprouts, which were appreciated, but other than that was pretty bare-boned. There should have been more egg, at the very least. Typhoon has been on my to do list for a long time. Whenever I want Thai, I always default to Thai Gardens. So it was time we finally went to Typhoon to see how they compared. We went in and we were seated immediately. They offer BYOB, and the corkage fee is only $1 per person. I wasn't drinking and they didn't charge me. Not that I would have cared for an extra $1, but it was nice that they didn't charge me. I was getting over a cold, so I was looking forward to some hot tea and some spicy food! I basically replicated my standard order from Thai Gardens so that I could do an apples to apples comparison, along with a couple other items we wanted to try. For appetizers, we got spring rolls and gyoza, and I got a bowl of tom yum soup with chicken, which I ordered "hot". Hot is the 4th spiciest option, out of a total of 5 options. I really wanted some good spice to clear out my sinuses. The tea came out and was lukewarm and not that flavorful. It was really a disappointment. The soup and appetizers were not that hot (temperature) either. The spring rolls were comparable to TG, but the accompanying plum sauce was thinner and less flavorful than at TG. The gyoza were good, just not that warm. My tom yum soup was not that spicy at all, I had expected much more. Usually the Thai restaurants are able to bring the spice. TG's version is generally much spicier, and I don't even ask to kick up the spiciness there. However, Typhoon had nice fresh mushrooms and basil, it was really full of quality ingredients. I just wish it was hotter in both spice level and temperature. For dinner, I ordered drunken noodles, my TG go to. My husband ordered the panang curry with chicken and plain fried rice. The drunken noodles gave me the same dilemma as the tom yum soup - nowhere near as spicy as TG, but full of amazing quality ingredients. The shrimp were huge and cooked perfectly, and the beef was amazing too. But I wished it had a little more heat to it. My husband's curry was good, but very watery and the coconut milk had not been mixed thoroughly through, so there were light and darker spots in the sauce. It was tasty but would have been good if it was thicker. The plain fried rice was good, and it came out on a plate in the shape of a heart. I saw a plate for another table where it was in the shape of a star. That's cute. They kept our water glasses filled, but didn't really ever check on us to see how things were. They brought the check without offering us dessert. Service was efficient, but nothing extra. The dining room is nice, but not as nice as TG. Also, TG is always packed and Typhoon was only about a third full. BYOB is definitely the biggest perk, especially if you're with a large party and plan on drinking. My biggest complaint was the lack of spicy foods. Typhoon was definitely a letdown from that perspective. Nice, wonderful staff and comfortable environment, but the food completely missed the mark. I ordered tea, spring rolls, and Pad See Ew. The tea was bland...comparable to drinking warm water. The spring rolls were really good, but the PadPad See Ew was the worst I've had. I asked for spice level 3 and what I got was a bland, flavorless dish loaded with black pepper and no chili peppers flakes. It definitely was not authentic and the first time I've seen black pepper in that dish. I pointed it out to the waitress and she even stated that I was right but yet did nothing to fix it. Typhoon gets credited as one of the few places I opted not to finish my food even though I was still hungry. In my opinion, there are wayyy better options for Thai, anywhere! I really like Typhoon. My brother has been here with his friends and said good things, and I read about the $5.95 lunch specials, so I had to stop in myself for lunch. The inside of the restaurant is much bigger and nicer than I expected from the outside. I was seated at a comfortable booth for a lunch date with myself, and I quickly turned to the lunch specials page. To the right of the $5.95 specials is a page that tells you to "make your lunch really special" - and add $4.95 to get a drink, soup, and an app. I hadn't eaten yet that day and was feeling extra hungry, so I decided to make my lunch extra special. Also, I wanted a Thai iced coffee, and I figured that would have been $2.50 more anyway, so why not add another $2.50 to get soup and an app too? (Note to self: Making my lunch extra special is too much for me. From now on, stick to one meal.) I ordered the red curry, and I asked for tofu even though it wasn't listed on the menu because I love tofu curries. I appreciated the option for brown rice on the side. The soup option was a wonton soup, and I went with a fresh roll for my app. The curry was good - it had just the right amount of sweetness and spiciness. The tofu was two deep fried triangles, which was fine, though I was hoping it would be softer and in smaller pieces. There was a good assortment of veggies that made up for it. The soup was ok - a lot of bok choy and greens. Because the curry was more than a substantial lunch, I left the soup to the side. The fresh roll was also fine. The staff was super friendly - even asked if I was Thai, though I told them my family's from Laos next door, so close enough. Water stayed filled, and I was checked on just enough without it being too awkward since I was there by myself. I looked at the rest of the menu, and the prices are very reasonable - plus the place is BYOB with a small charge of $1 for everyone drinking. I ate there with my sister and girlfriend on a Saturday night, and we were treated to a lovely rendition of Axel F by a keyboard/guitar combo who appeared to have teleported from 1981. About 3 minutes after signing the check, I was busy enjoying the dregs of my Thai iced tea when the maitre d' came over and KICKED US OUT, saying that she was 'really sorry but I need the table because people are waiting.' Well, admittedly I live in middletown, but don't dine much on Main St. For some reason, most of the people I know in Middletown don't dine within the city much. Maybe it's because most of the options on main st are smoke & mirrors, such as Typhoon. My wife and I decided on a friday lunch date here, as she was in the mood for Thai, and I had not heard much about the restaurant itself. Upon walking in we were greeted with about 5 homemade signs affixed with page protectors and tape to the hostess stand. Most notably was the sign that "Children are welcomed, but bad behavior will not be tolerated". With my 2 daughters in mind, I was immediately turned off and on the defensive. The service was prompt, but short and inattentive. My wife ordered the Pad Thai, and I ordered the Chicken Green Curry Combo w/ Spring Roll and Vegetable Soup. There is no fine-dining atmosphere here, but the food is plated and presented with that in mind. It comes off as pretentious (smoke & mirrors), because the portion sizes are ridiculously small. My wife's Pad Thai was absolutely abhorrent. Unpalatable, and tasted very old. It was slopped together and not served with fresh sprouts, lime or basil. The vegetable soup was pedestrian and bland, and I was served 3 halves of a spring roll. I wonder what they do with the leftover half. Anyways, the spring rolls were perfectly crispy and fresh, but could have used some seasoning. Salt would have gone a long way, because the dipping sauce didn't any anything to the dish. My green curry was far better, although again, the portion size was small. Spice level was good, but the chicken was slightly dry. We ordered sticky rice & mango for dessert and the portion size was laughable. 1 freshly sliced mango, fanned out around about 3 tablespoons of rice. It was gone in 4 bites. While the flavor was good, and the mango was fresh, at $6 this was a joke. $34 after tax & tip and we both were still hungry afterwards. No return warranted here, which is a shame, because it's BYOB with $1 corkage. read more

Granted, we actually knew the owner prior to them opening this place up (hint hint Thai Gard...........n) because we used to visit Thai Garden (only choice at that time, and we did not like Thai Garden that much). This is one of our regular place for a Saturday lunch, or a Friday night dinner. Love the crispy sweet n' sour duck, Pad Thai is the best, curry are great, and crispy fish with various different types of sauces are all to die for. (Although, our most favorite Thai place is in the Coolidge Corner area, called Rod Dee in MA). The service (while we were in CT) was the best. They had never ever rushed us. Owner comes chat with us. At the time, they didn't serve beer (I don't know about now), and we always BYOB, and they never ever charged us any corkage fees for either beer or wine. (Restaurant operators in Silicon Valley, listen up, you guys are charging too much). In fact, we were there when the first opened, and my very last meal in Connecticut with my best friend was at Typhoon. We had: - Bowl of Tom Yum (seafood) - Som tum - Thai Basil (chicken) - Panang curry (pork) - Kind of a pad thai-sauteed veggies for my toddler NOTE: This place is BYO!!! They may recommend a place two doors away, but the selection is dismal. There are more places along the drag by which you would do better to bring the libation of your choice; certainly no Thai beers there. Typhoon will chill anything that need be chilled w/ a wine bucket and ice. I forgot to check to see if there's a corkage fee. Hostess (owner?) was gracious. Server was wonderful; there when we wanted, but not hovering. She's a curry fan, and it seems in the same vein and she seconded the AB's penchant for Panang. Server directed us to the traditional protein for every dish. Having our designated curry, we ventured into acid test territory. The others are those by which I judge a Thai restaurant, when Kau Soi isn't available and the diners won't do a fish. Next time I'll try the Mussels Clay Pot and Mussels Curry, and Drunken Noodle Veggie roll off the "Chef Recommends" menu on the website. From the moment I walked in to placa take out order, I was treated with such a warm welcome it was just incredible. I was reading the take out menu and the owner came up to me and said " let me get you regular menu so you can see everything that we have" She then invited me to sit down, got me a drink and made sure I was comfortable! Well, I was very comfortable. After I placed my order for the Beef Masamen, she went back to the kitchen to give them my order, came back out and was very social to all of the guests. They really go out of their way to make sure everyone feels like they are family. Now about the food! The food was perfect! I asked them not to make my Beef Masamen to spicy, and they made it just right. To ingredients were fresh, the food was tasty and the staff was wonderful! I rarely speak so highly of an establishment, but when you go above and beyond like these folks have they deserve some praise!!! You know, it always helps when you spend your hard-earned money on a meal and get two things: great quality food and friendly service. You get both here, and you leave feeling satisfied because of both. I can't think of a nicer group of people who are friendly and accommodating. Doesn't matter whether we're eating in or taking out, lunch with friends or with the (well-behaved) kids, it's always a pleasure to dine at Typhoon. So now that that's out of the way, how's the food?! It's delicious, and these folks are not afraid to add the proper spice and heat to the dishes they serve, so pay attention to the spice levels Outstanding appetizers we regularly enjoy here include "magic sticks", veggie spring rolls, crunchy spring rolls, and golden tofu. That last one is really a standout: 4 pieces of tofu wrapped with crunchy noodles, and served in the center with a ball of sweet rice, all drizzled with a light sauce. Soups: Tom Ka Gai and Tom Yom Goong are lovely, particularly on a cold night. Enrees we can happily recommend: Pad Golden Noodle, Pad Thai, Green Curry, and Panang Curry. Rice is served in lovely little shapes like stars and hearts, They are very accommodating with special requests. We've never had a miss on a meal there yet. read more

Fine ingredients, great flavor, lovely service. I was a little skeptical about coming here because they don't use fish sauce which is a BIG flavor in Thai food and a condiment I burn through in my home cooking. I can assure you, they have managed to duplicate the flavor, and consequently vegan and vegs people can eat here freely. The price are higher than most Thai places when comparing things like a drunken noodle or a Curry, but, the quality of ingredients justifies this. I'll fame it this way, if you were at your standard Thai place and ordered a curry, and the waitress said "would you like to pay an extra three dollars to get our fresh veggie boost?" I would say yes! So IMO the higher prices are justified. Panang Curry was loaded with fresh broccoli and snow peas, carrot, squash and so much layered flavor. Lime leaf was such a lovely tangy touch, and at first I didn't sense much heat, but it creeped up on me by the end. I think I'd order it hotter next time. Loved the rice which was presented as a star. Drunken noodle was flavorful and comforting. The star of the meal was green papaya salad, super spicy an flavorful. I think next time I'd emphasize that a higher heat level is needed, overall I appreciate the fresh ingredient and attention to detail. read more

I have much love for both Typhoon and Thai Gardens. I will say that Typhoon has a better set-up for large groups. It is easily top 5 best restaurants on Main Street IMO, both in terms of food-quality, quality of service, and price. Moreover, they've expanded their menu to include Vietnamese pho and other classic SE dishes. It's definitely a business that takes great pride in itself and operates with a lot of love. I'd go for the drunken noodles, the pho, and duck dishes! But for some reason am not a fan of the sukiyaki dishes (it is good, but it's more like hot pot and not like Japanese sukiyaki if you've ever had it.) read more
