I hired Donald to accomplish a divorce with someone overseas. I was also in the process of selling my place and moving across the country. I was 100% honest the whole time. I informed Donald when I was moving. I was informed the divorce overall would take 6 months. When it came time to sell my home it got held up because my assets were frozen because I filed for the divorce. Donald said he was unaware this would happen. As a divorce attorney I would expect him to know these things. I cancelled the petition in order to sell my place and move as planned. At this point he said he could still complete the divorce. I moved from the state 2 months into this process. I ended up initiating a deal with my ex to try to move the divorce along faster. After being moved to a new state Donald informed he could no longer complete the divorce because I had moved. Even though he originally told me he still could. He said it was my fault because we stopped the petition so I could sell my home, because he told me I could still sell my home even though I was filing for divorce. He was going to help find another lawyer in my new state at no cost to me. He helped find a new lawyer and I received a bill from the new lawyer and from Donald. The bill from Donald was a huge surprise as he never told me my retainer had run out. When I asked him about the bill he said he had gone above and beyond to help my case and even gave me a discounted rate. It was one mistake after the next. He blamed it on me. I would expect him to know the rules better where he is a divorce lawyer. He doesn't seem competent in performing a more complex divorce. read more

I made a huge mistake not hiring attorney Donald Tye at the beginning when my divorce started. Foolishly I thought my now ex-husband would be a decent guy so I hired a local attorney, who seemed good enough to help write up a divorce agreement and that would be that. I have been through my share of Attorneys who "Specialize" in custody/divorce matters. Due to the complex nature of my case I was looking for the best of the best in this field and felt it was time to switch to someone with immense experience. Exceptionally poor representation. I was called in to help a family friend deal with Tye after months of frustration with his arrogant, condescending, and unprofessional behavior. But there is no way to work with this man effectively. He would show up to meetings unprepared with the WRONG client file and not knowing who he was meeting with. He would then try to cover by giving advise based on erroneous/incomplete information. His advise would change from meeting to meeting, seemed largely based on how many hours he could bill before you ran out of money, and even had the gall to admit as much. He failed to carry out the due diligence required by the court in examining financial records, his professional advise was exceptionally poor, and the settlement he negotiated on her behalf was poor. I have worked with many attorneys over the years, and I can honestly say I have never met a more unprofessional attorney in this area. There are so very many better choices out there... do not work with this man. read more

Donald was my "closer." After years of hearings, trial dates, and the rest of the horrors that constitute the divorce process in MA, I went to Donald and he got the job done. He has the gravitas and firepower to get the other side to pay attention. He also has the smarts and flexibility to negotiate effectively. He's neither a flamethrower nor a pushover. He also focuses on what really matters: your kids and the rest of your life. Donald's support staff and associates are excellent, which means a lot because if you're in a full-court (so to speak) press, you're going to be dealing with associates and paralegals a lot. Donald was clear up front about costs (which many attorneys have a hard time talking accurately about) and I never felt his charges were out of line. Another aspect of Donald's approach that I really liked is that he offers an initial PAID consult, during which he'll spend a few hours with you figuring out your situation and offering his recommendations. Most attorneys will meet with you for free, but it's really just trying to close a sale. (Some will meet with you for "free" and then if you don't hire them they'll send you a bill.) Because Donald's paid for this consult you're not getting a song and dance designed to get you to sign on. You get his thoughtful analysis and you can do what you want with it. Even if you're not sure what to do, I strongly recommend seeking Donald's initial consult, even if only as a second opinion. read more

Don consistently provided what I consider to be expert guidance through the legal swamp of my divorce, as well as a couple of subsequent unpleasant episodes of legal wrestling that occurred with my ex-spouse and her lawyer. Although dealing with such matters is exquisitely unnerving, I found considerable comfort in the fact that Don always advocated for me in a very thoughtful, reliable, and humane fashion. I wholeheartedly agree with another reviewer that Don effectively assumes a middle-of-the-road approach since he is neither a pushover nor a tyrannical monster when dealing with opposing counsel: rather, he is diligent and very persistent in pursuing the strategy that the two of you agree to. I highly recommend Donald Tye. He was proactive and persevered in a difficult divorce to get a fair settlement and parenting plan and avoid future costly litigation. My spouse's anger and obstructive behavior added complexity. Donald worked cooperatively with opposing counsel, mediator and our legal team which resulted in creative solutions. My settlement had challenges with allocation of inherited and gifted assets. I consulted five lawyers before retaining Donald. The others laid out interpretations of the law promising a very unbalanced settlement. Donald's knowledge of the law gave new perspective and he delivered on that initial expectation. My life and my child's future would otherwise be one of hardship. Donald put our child's interests foremost and kept my expectations realistic. He implemented safeguards for future parenting. Donald negotiated a very solid divorce settlement on my behalf. The major issue at stake was child custody. He is experienced and has a good sense of what will fly in court. I initially had somewhat unrealistic expectations but working with Donald and his team, I came to realize what would be considered reasonable and quite frankly, in the best interest of our child. Donald provided high-level strategic advice and guidance but it was important to work closely with his associates and paralegals as they dealt with much of the details. He took care of my financial interests (which were not a significant concern to me) and I find myself in a very good position now (unlike my former spouse who is financially worse off post-divorce). Yes, Donald is expensive, but you must realize that this is a top tier firm when you sit in their gorgeous offices with its fabulous views of the city. However, no more expensive than other top tier firms in Boston - proof? My former spouse's legal fees as listed on his financial statement (he hired another top tier firm across town) were comparable to my legal fees. He is a bit of a character but if you can get past that, recognize his strengths and those of his team, and have realistic expectations, then I think you will have a satisfactory outcome. read more
