Unique things to do in Columbia, SC!

Unique thing to do in Columbia, SC since the museums close at 5p. Parking lot is $3 or find street parking - coin machine or download the passport app to pay with credit card.

Free, free photo op. Such a cool experience - if I lived there I think I would go everyday to take a pic with the sunset making so many changes. And right next door was the large fire hydrant.

I love murals. The transform plain walls into points of interest and give places unique character. The Tunnelvision Mural is one of those classic pieces - unique, great eye candy and definitely memorable! The fireplug sculpture is nearby. Both were completed by the same artist.

Amazing mural on a wall. It's located right next to the largest fire hydrant you will ever see as well so you can take two pictures in the same location :)

I read about Tunnelvision in a freetimes Bites and Sights that I picked up from one of those newstand things on a sidewalk somewhere in the city. Husband and I found it by accident when we were wandering around downtown. It's an almost real-looking mural painted (in the late 70s by the artist Blue Sky) on the side of a building that gives the illusion of being able to drive through. It's both a fun and historical piece of Columbia culture and definitely worth checking out. The Busted Plug, the world's largest fire hydrant, is nearby in the same parking lot, also created by Blue Sky.

Great dollar value if you're interested in all locations mentioned. The museum was easy to find and offered plenty of parking in a lot shared with the EdVenture Children's Museum. They had many exhibits that our 7 & 12 year old enjoyed but they thoroughly enjoyed the second floor galleries with the dinosaur exhibit and the habitat exhibits. Staff was very friendly and helpful when fielding our questions. They also enjoyed seeing the the history of SC through the years represented through artifacts and the changes from the colony, war, and industrialization of the city with mills and the railroad. They also have a planetarium and a 4D shows offered throughout the day. Highly recommend adding this to your itinerary if you are in the Columbia area! The selection of exhibits were fun to see and educational.

The museum itself was ok, the other exhibits weren't that exciting. The planetarium was cool though, definitely watch a show while you are at the museum. The Disney exhibit was awesome, the costumes are beautiful! And since they do timed admission there aren't a ton of people there at the same time which makes it very enjoyable.

A great zoo experience!…read more We took advantage of the CoolPASS offered by Experience Columbia, SC getting us access to the Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens, EdVenture Children's Museum, and the South Carolina State Museum and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend! This also covers your parking for the zoo. Easy to redeem by going to Will Call. A short 2.5hr drive from Savannah, GA was well worth it! Staff was helpful for any questions. General admissions gets you access to the Zoo, Botanical Garden, Waterfall Junction, and Saluda Skyride. They do have additional experiences at an additional costs but not necessary if you are okay with missing out of the petting zoo, animal feedings, the carousel, train, and the Sky High Safari. A couple of food options are available such as burgers, chicken fingers, pizza, sandwiches/wraps, and Kona Ice. Meals are easily $20 per person if you are purchasing drinks. No outside food and drinks are permitted into the zoo but you can bring refillable water bottles. Picnic tables are available outside of the park and same-day re-entry is possible if you show your original receipt. We easily spent 5 hours at the zoo without any of the "Explore More" options. A full day at the zoo is very possible! Plenty of shade and things to see and do! Drop-off or 15-minute parking is available if you have someone in your party who may struggle with walking from the parking lot. Bring your own stroller or they have them available for rent if you needed. We saw many families with wagons/carts.

They have flamingos, birds, snakes, gorillas, sea otters, baboons, zebras, koalas, and more! You can take the skyride up to the botanical garden (strollers are allowed). There is so much to see and do for the whole family!
