Finding a good barber shop in this part of Illinois seems to be no easy task. Since the shop in…read moreDelavan closed in 2011, it's been an ongoing search. Fortman's in Morton is a nice shop, but has more the feel of a salon than a traditional barber shop. If you're looking for the kind of shop your dad took you to, that had the fragrance of powder and after shave, with well-thumbed copies of Sports Illustrated, it can be a frustrating search. I have nothing against women barbers; I'm sure there are very good ones out there. For me, it's just that I've never been able to get a woman barber to cut my hair the way a man barber does; I guess what I ask for must go against the "principles of styling" or something. They want to make me look like a magazine cover; I want to leave looking like me. Anyway--Hanover's, Mason City--this is a solid barber shop, on the SW corner of the main intersection of town. There's no pole, and no big sign, so if you're not carefully looking for the shop, you may miss it. Jeremy, the younger barber there, gives me a good cut, is a friendly guy, and will take the time to do the traditional barbering I look for. The price was very reasonable ($10), the shop comfortable, and I've pretty much made it my regular barber shop.
