Best gym in the East Bay. Great community and atmosphere, great facilities, and always super clean.

My mom has been coming to this gym for a while and when I was looking for a new place to go over the summer I looked around but ended up choosing Truve, and I'm so glad I did. I have been running half marathons for the past few years so I am pretty in shape but I was looking for a class that would help me build up my strength in a more entertaining way than machines at the gym. I found that with the Truve Fit Camp. It is taught by Jessica at 6am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and by Allison at 8:30am on Saturday. I leave every class feeling sweaty, exhausted, and strong. If anything is a testament to how much I enjoy Truve it is the fact that I am willing to wake up at 5:30am three times a week to workout. Now that's saying something. read more

I've been coming to many (2-3 per week) yoga and pilates community classes ever since this place opened about two years ago. I like the very much down-to-business, taking you seriously, helping you do your own best, atmosphere. Very welcome and supportive environment. Friendly & professional personnel. On occasion, I brought my spouse and teenagers along and they loved it, too. There are classes of all kinds and for all skill levels. I love love this gym. I do not write reviews, but I just had to write one on this place. First off, I am by no means a fitness lover and am an average Jane Doe. I have been dreading going to the gym for the longest time, because of the boring routine. I even have a gym in my building and I still do not go to it. Hence I had to find a nearby gym that kept me motivated. It took me awhile but I found my gym! I found Alison, the owner through yelp (she is also a personal trainer) and I fell in love with her gym as soon as I walked in. I have been coming here since September, 2017 and I haven't gotten bored yet! That tells you a lot :: Positives: Aesthetics: It does not look like a 24 Hour fitness or cross fitness gym with weights or treadmills everyplace . Alison has done a great job with the layout of the place. Environment: This place does not smell like a gym and clients are always friendly. You will find clients of different levels here (beginners to advance) Personal touches: The bathroom has all the essentials needed for every girl's desire Trainers: Every trainer I have interacted with has been friendly and great. Truve is more than a gym/workout facility. It's a place to meet new friends, learn new things and get as the owner Alison Campbell says, "Hella Fit". Alison, the owner is also my personal trainer, and has been training me for the last few years. Through pregnancies, medical issues, and life hurdles, she's helped me get get stronger, work on my diet/overall health and much more. She's a great personal trainer who knows how to push you and get the maximum out of you in one hour. On top of the personal training, Truve also has great classes (I personally love the Pilates classes with Mary), and other wellness options (massages!). Overall, I recommend Truve to all my Oakland area friends, especially if you want a more personalized health and wellness gym experience. read more

Truve is a fantastic gym and an even better community. The owner, Alison, is the shining star of this place. She knows most (if not all) of Truve's clients by name, learning about them within the first few visits. She checks up on people who haven't come in for a while, making sure they are okay and encouraging them to come in for a class or session. Because of Alison's dedication to supporting physical and mental health, the rest of Truve community seems to have a special bond. Everyone is welcome here and everyone is a friend or potential friend. Anybody who rates this place less than 5 stars is a jerk...or from France, where NOTHING gets 5 stars. Anyway. With just a twinge of shame, I admit I'm a Classpasser, which is how I discovered and access this studio/gym. In 6 months, I've taken over 140 classes all over the East Bay, and thus I've pretty much tried a lot of places. And all I can say is that this place is pure class. Alison, the owner, has some sort of photographic memory and is ridiculously cool. In fact, I am not used to any business owner knowing me by name, face, taco order, or wine preference until I have patronized their establishment at least 50 times. So I was a little confused when she called me by name the second time I walked in the business. "Who's she talking to?", I thought, and actually looked behind me to check out the other person with my name. Ha ha, good times. EVERY instructor I have tried for every class-- from yoga to spinning to TRX to their crazy bootcamp/crossfit style classes that have different name variations-- are truly excellent and represent Oakland's diversity. Classes are small, but will probably get more popular as the tech bros/sises keep moving to Oakland. I really hope this place keeps growing and succeeding. It deserves to be part of the community (they offer FREE community classes once a week) and somehow I think Alison will manage to keep the same welcoming vibe when it does finally draw a huge clientele. Tip: Located in a popular part of Oakland, next to some great places to hit up to eat/drink after your workout. They got showers, with all the girlie stuff you need to get bar-ready, so no need to head home first. read more

I started my journey into fitness with my partner about march this year . We had no idea what we were doing or where to start. We chose Truve since its a small gym where everyone gets attention from the instructors during class and the personal trainers were pretty affordable for couples. We also loved that there are people of all body types, ages, and fitness levels there . Throughout my time at truve I had gained so much strength and confidence in myself (I still have a ways to go before I reach my goals but I know I can get there) The staff are all amazing ! My experience while training at Truve was something like... tough love. You love to be there and it's tough to leave! I really enjoyed the location, comfortable atmosphere and industrial yet modern design. It was unique, creative and artistic. They have quality equipment and a clean and spacious mens shower room. While all my training was done with Alison Campbell, I did have the chance to attend a meet n greet where all the Truve professionals were available. Ever had that feeling that you have found "your place"? You know the place you love to take friends from out of town, or restaurant where you go when you want to feel comfortable and love the food,, well Truve is an example for me of where I have found my workout place. Truve makes me feel like exercise and fitness become more than just something I "SHOULD" do, but something I look forward to and have decided "HAVE" to incorporated into my routine and daily life. The reasons below explain why that is, I hope this is helpful if you are looking for something similar. I was introduced to Truve through a friend at work, and immediately liked it and felt comfortable. Not only is the gym itself beautiful, the atmosphere which includes the people, the classes, the decor, and the equipment are all welcoming and accessible, which I believe is really important - especially when you are new to a gym. I have always felt like I can meet new people (find a class buddy) and no matter what class I take, questions are encouraged, your body issues are assessed, and you can receive any modification you need. The instructors at Truve really watch you and care about your form and comfort level. In my opinion, this sets Truve apart as a fitness facility because I feel like they are as invested in my progress as I am. That is special. Speaking of special, I can bore easily and then find excuses not to go to a gym, but that hasn't happened here because they have so many different types of classes! With options for just about everything, I can find diversity in my workout routine. I love Bootcamps, and Alison's Bootcamp is awesome (seriously you have to try it), as is Amy's Tires, Ropes, and Balls class, and I mix up my routine with dance classes (world beats by Julia is one of my favorites), along with spin or lean power series with Martin from time to time. I've also taken almost all of the following: yoga, pilates, spin, barre, boxing and TRX. There are so many options and I can vary my workout depending on how my body feels, which is awesome and really leaves me with no excuses for not making it in. :-) Couple that with all the services offered at Truve that encourage total body health and I became hooked. Who doesn't want the convenience of all of the things I need in the same place? Massage, Acupuncture, Reiki, Tanning, Skincare/Facials, Eyelash treatments, Chiropractic, AND Nutrition. With stocked showers and lockers, I honestly could hang out here all day. I haven't tried all of those things yet but I have gotten facials from Lilliana and tried the lash extensions and was very happy with the service and results. I can't always do these things but for treating myself it is nice to have options and I hear from my friends at the gym that the massages and tanning are awesome as well. The last thing I'll mention about Truve is the gym's belief in giving back to the community. They refer to everyone as part of the "Truve Family" and it sounds cheesy, but they really mean it and extend that mindset to the Oakland community as a whole. There is a free community class every day. Meaning anyone can go take a class at Truve because Alison (the owner) really wants fitness to be accessible. The trainers support this mindset by each teaching one of these classes themselves. Again, c'mon this is so cool! Where (in the Bay Area) do you find this type of giving back from other places? It honestly makes me happy to pay for a membership at Truve that not only allows me so many classes (unlimited btw) but that gives to a place that also supports my community. It is a win-win. My first visit to Truve was last May as a 70 year old woman with no experience in Pilates. My goal was to improve my balance and coordination after breaking a small bone in my foot-the result of a fall the previous winter. I was greeted warmly by Truve's owner, Alison, who I continue to admire not only for her outstanding management skills but for the nurturing environment she creates there. And, kudos to Karen and Mary, my lovely, kind, and skillful Pilates instructors, who have provided me with individual and group classes for the past 6 months. I am not only better balanced and coordinated, but I am stronger! I can now walk longer distances, run faster, and move through the world with confidence, vigor, and grace. I can't say enough good things about Truve, specifically the TruveBarre class and its instructor, Teresa. I've been taking the class sporadically through ClassPass since I was about 3 months pregnant. From the get-go Teresa was incredibly encouraging and always made sure I had proper form. Not only that, she suggested modifications that would work best with my growing belly. While the class always kicks my butt (in a good way), I always look forward to attending. It's a great workout, and Teresa's encouragement and energy is infectious. I plan to keep going to the class until I'm about to pop, and hopefully post-baby too. read more

I've been enjoying being a member of the Truve family since February 2015. It's hard to explain what all I love about Truve, but I'll give it a try: 1. The diversity. I take lots of classes at lots of places, but consistently there is a wider variety of bodies (shape, color, age, fitness level) here than anywhere else I've been other than maybe ODC in SF, and it certainly ties with ODC. 2. The people. Every who works at Truve is friendly and excited you're there, even if you don't look like someone who normally goes to the gym. 3. It's about fitness, not weight. I'm fat (and I'm ok with that) but I'm also strong and really active. At Truve, I've never had an instructor talk to me about loosing weight, instead they talk to me about gaining strength or stamina. While I don't tend to need modifications, I've seen them be offered to many people for many different reasons. These are people who want everyone to be moving, regardless of what their body looks like. 4. The variety. They have so many different kinds of classes at so many different times of day. 5. The facilities. I like to workout before heading to the office and thanks to the locker room that's not a problem. There's space to hang my clothes, there's anything I might need if I forget it, including hair ties and pins. 6. The free classes. That's right, they have free classes so that everyone can exercise, even if you can't afford a class, and they are great classes. And it's not one class, it's nearly every day and multiple classes on the weekends. 7. The other stuff. Want a massage? done. How about a facial? yep. read more

I was looking for a gym that provided competent personal training and Pilates instruction. I found it in Truve! Not too small and not too big. The facility is clean, safe and the staff is friendly. They make you feel like family in short order. They offer a variety of classes and have solid and up to date equipment. I've been going to classes at Truve for about a month now - since it's their 5th birthday today and I can't make it to the celebration, I thought I'd leave a review instead! Truve is such a warm, community-oriented space - Alison, the owner, is committed to helping everyone feel welcome and to meet their fitness goals, whatever they may be. When I walked in for my first class, she knew my name (after talking on the phone earlier that week) and I've noticed that she greets everyone who walks into the gym. Everyone in each of the classes I've attended has been friendly and supportive. I have had a really hard time motivating myself to work out at my traditional gym and it was taking a toll on my physical and mental health. At Truve, I actually look forward to each class and feel accomplished (and exhausted) when I walk out. I'm having a great time, and it is never boring, ever. 12/10. read more

Couldn't be more happy to find a gym that is a community, that cares and continues to push me to do what I thought I wasn't capable of. Had the best Pilates class with Karen in the morning. A great way to start Saturday. I really liked the upbeat atmosphere of the studio even though the music from another class was pretty loud for a while. The open studio with windows was very relaxing. They have lots of cool equipment. They have free keys to lock stuff up, showers, and lots of small things like razors etc. in the bathroom. I liked this class because I left feeling my body more aligned than before and opened up. Karen really knew all the small details that make Pilates awesome and challenging. I really like that she tailored it for oir trouble spots. Challenged and relaxed! Parking was okay, I parked down from Pican and paid street parking. I'd give yourself some time to find a spot though. The other classes they offered also looked fun. read more

The atmosphere and dynamic of this place is great! The first classes are free and they send you an email with information and a log in that you can check to see what other classes they offer. I went to my first class last Wednesday at 6pm, the trainer was Doretha and I will be returning to her classes. She was attentive and gave you alternative ways to do things depending on your skill level. She pushed and encouraged me which is something I need right now. I went for a Spin Class with Libby and it was amazing, she is so energetic and enthusiastic, the class was intense and enjoyable! A great workout, I fully recommend it. I had the chance to take some conditioning classes with Allison and they were out of this world, so much variation in the exercises that you really feel how all your body works. I cannot say enough about this place. I've worked out with a lot of trainers in a lot of gyms and taken A LOT of classes all over the bay area. From the moment I walked in I instantly felt comfortable. All the trainers and staff are professional and friendly. I don't ever feel like I should be a certain shape or size. It's all geared towards getting stronger and feeling comfortable in your own skin. I've also never laughed more working out than here. I look forward to training here. The facilities are state of the art (pilates reformer, spin, studio classes, pilates mat, dance classes, every gym toy you will ever need) and the amenities are where it's at. They provide everything from face wash to gum in the locker room. You can workout and head off to your destination without skipping a beat. It's a complete health & welleness center...estheticians (facials, waxing, lash extensions), massage therapists (thai massage, swedish, deep tissue), acupuncture, nutritionists and even spray tanning. My first investment in a nice gym! Before this, I was doing the big-box thing at 24 Hour Fitness, which was not awesome but it did the job. Truve does the job AND it's awesome. Truve's fitness offerings are all classes and personal training, which is all I wanted out of my old gym anyway. (I love coaching! Ugh, spare me the tedium of being on my own, poking at different random gym machines.) Here's my rundown: WHO: The owner Alison has gone above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and personalize the experience. And I've had great experiences with each of the instructors I've taken classes with -- most of them know me by name and are very receptive to any injuries or limitations I might have. WHAT: My favorite thing about this gym is the wide selection of classes. Spin and TRX (called Suspension Sculpt here) are current favorites but I pretty much assess what kind of mood I'm in and pick classes accordingly. They're all solid. I have a few friends who work out with me here and we're always like "soooo how are you feeling today?" And then we go work out. :) WHERE: The facilities are clean and spacious. The women's locker room has two showers and is generously stocked with everything from towels to extra hair ties. Goodness gracious do I love Truve. Let me count the ways: 1. There's no typical gym bulls*t: No one's sizing each other up or checking each other out. The vibe is inclusive, open, friendly and completely "come as you are." 2. The instructors are amazing: They're kind, inspiring and push you while also respecting where you're at. 3. They offer FREE classes: YES! Community service is a core tenet of Truve's owner Alison Campbell and every Saturday and Sunday she personally teaches a community bootcamp class FOR FREE. It still blows my mind. 4. They care: From fresh towels in every workout area, to the razors and hair products in the bathroom to the fresh fruit at the sign in desk, Truve is a place where they take care of you at every step of your workout experience. Just finished my massage with Memi. It was so awesome! You get to choose an aroma if you like. I sprained my shoulder area a couple weeks back and had thought it healed. Memi told me that she felt it, within minutes of working on my body! I left with a euphoric and a happy feeling. Would definitely be back!! read more

I recently moved to downtown Oakland and have been using ClassPass as a way to check out the local fitness studios and gyms. My first class at Truve was a "community class" where all proceeds of the class fees are donated to one of the Truve team members' cause of choice. Cool. The bootcamp-style class was a killer workout and an amazing introduction to a community-driven, inclusive, warm, yet still challenging gym environment. Alison, Amy, Andrea, and Elisita have all been energetic and hands-on while leading fun and challenging classes. The other members of the gym are super friendly; some of the bootcamp classes require teamwork and getting to know other folks in the class. The facilities are unique and the classes are varied with flexibility around times of day. All in all, this is an amazing "home studio" that I have added outside of ClassPass and will continue to bake into my routine and explore more classes. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to gain a community gym feel with excellent variety in class and workout offerings! read more

Updated Review: This review is for Kristarae, who is one of the awesome trainers / instructors at Truve. Kristarae has been my trainer for almost a year and it has been a life changing experience. With her coaching, I am the strongest I've ever been, my mental health has improved, my confidence is on the rise and I feel better overall. Initially, I was nervous about getting a personal trainer because I was out of shape and didn't know what to expect from the training sessions, but within the first few minutes of meeting Kristarae, I knew I had made the right choice. She is incredibly kind, has an innate ability to know exactly what her clients need, will be your biggest cheerleader and is just an all around awesome person. She constantly motivates me to be my best self. Kristarae makes the sessions fun and challenging, she always pushes me to do things I don't think I can do (but surprise, surprise, I can!). I never thought I would be the person who is excited to work out but I genuinely look forward to our training sessions. No matter your fitness level or goals, Kristarae will help you get to where you want to be. Kristarae also teaches her signature Volt Dance class (Every Monday at 6pm) and Spin Class (Every Wednesday at 6pm) and I highly recommend both. Kristarae's VOLT class is so fun! She walks you through the steps before each song and then dances with the class so you can follow along. I find myself smiling within 5 minutes of starting class; the music is fantastic, the steps are easy (if I can do it, anyone can!) and the cardio work out is legit. Plus it's a great group of people who take this class, there is always a good energy! Volt is a great way to kick of your week! I was hesitant to take spin because it seems like such an intense workout and I had never done it before, but I am SO glad I started taking Kristarae's class! It's an AWESOME workout for both beginners like me and more advanced spinners. She plays the best music; Hip Hop, Top 40, some old school R&B and Rap, everything that has a strong beat to spin to. Talk about an awesome workout, I feel like a total bad a** after finishing that class! To summarize: Kristarae is the best. Do yourself a favor and take one of her classes or sign up for a personal training session. It will be the best decision you make all day. read more

This place is awesome!!! I was reading some of the other reviews and I think everything has been said, but we can't tell you enough how good this gym is, go check it out by yourself, you won't be disappointed (actually it will exceed your expectations, I'm sure). Let me try to summarize it: - The facility is beautiful, spacious, clean and conveniently located. They have showers fully equipped, so you don't have to bring all the extra stuff if you need to shower after your workout. They have plenty equipment, in good condition and always very clean. - They have a variety of classes, so you'll find something you enjoy and you won't get bored of doing the same thing (great if you want to try something different and get out of your confort zone, for example, I was intimidated about doing capoeira, but I decided to try it one day and actually enjoyed it a lot, take the risk! ) - Instructors are very professional, friendly and fun... Alison, the owner really took the time to look for some of the best practitioners in the area - and she is for sure one of the best too ;) - They have FREE clases... yes, FREE. This is a community oriented gym and they offer free classes almost everyday, so everybody can has access to fitness and wellness. After moving into the Hive I decided to give this place a try, was looking for a personal trainer and different class options. From the first call Allison was great! She helped me figure out who to work with and what first steps would be. The trainer she recommended, Fernando, has been great. Everyone that works there is so nice and welcoming, you are definitely joining a community and not just another gym. The class options are fantastic, there are so many different varieties and at all different times of the day. They even offer free community classes! This review for my favorite gym is long overdue. I joined this gym over 3 years ago and was very sad when we moved away from Oakland for a year. During that year, I tried but could not find another gym that has the variety of classes, awesome instructors, and the real sense of community that Alison, the owner, works so hard to create. One of the reasons I was thrilled to be moving back to Oakland was that I would once again get to work out at Truve.
