This barber shop definitely is a man's kind of place. There is a sitting area in the back with a…read morelarge flat screen TV, and even one of those pay massage recliners. Any hair particles are blown off with a pneumatic air hose. It's very casual. More like a garage feel inside. Don't let the black paint scare you off, the atmosphere was quite positive. When I walked in I was greeted and invited to take a seat while I waited my turn, only one ahead of me. I took the first barber with an empty chair. Rico asked me how I wanted my hair cut and had a few follow up questions to ensure he knew my expectations. Then he went to work. He was not slow, but he took his time like an artist working on a project. I was very pleased with the result. I think I have finally found my new barbershop. Most other places I've tried immediately whip out a pair of clippers and proceed to zip through my hair leaving me with "white walls" and feeling scalped. I appreciate the fact that they listened to me and honored my request. They charge $15 for a haircut, but they take their time and do it right rather than run you through like an assembly line. Totally worth it. There are at least four barbers who work here, all were friendly and engaging. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the reggaeton / rap music playing, not my personal preference, but it was soft enough I could still have a decent conversation with others. I think most of their clientele would enjoy that kind of music since they're located right across from the UT RGV campus. They offer a number of services including beard trimming, eyebrow shaping, etc. This is not a fancy or a frilly place. No tea and cookies on a doily. But if you want a great barber, check them out. I'll be back.

Overall: 3.7 stars Kind of hidden in plain sight, The King Barber and Salon is in Jackson Plaza in between Aaron's and Wingstop, and just west of Chili's Restaurant. The barber I was going to quit and I needed a new barber. I tried this place based on reviews. I signed in and requested Lupe because others recommended him for beards. I had just missed him, so I went with JT who recently transferred from another barber shop. I entered, signed in and waited in full view of three employees (not including JT), and no one acknowledged my presence for at least 10 minutes. One barber finished the client he was with and left. After a few more minutes JT, whose station was out of my line of sight finished with his client and came around to the front. Seeing my name, he called me to his station. I showed JT pictures of what I wanted, and he delivered. He was pleasant and efficient. He gave me both a haircut and redefined my beard. I am happy with the results, and so is my wife. He listened, understood and gave me what I requested. JT's service was just fine. I gave the business as a whole only 2 stars for customer service because of not being acknowledged for so long. A quick, "welcome, someone will be with you in a few moments," would have been nice. Clients include men, women and children. So it's family friendly. A TV is on the wall near the waiting area. It's not luxurious but it is nice. I will be back. I will call first to ensure JT or Lupe is there.

Rather than walking in, I try to call ahead and see if my barber, JT, is available. JT is easy-going and delivers solid cuts. Cash or card is accepted.

This review is based on customer service. Not the students…read more I went on Monday to get a "$10" perm and was quickly told that it's only $10 for short hair. And mine would cost $65 I thought "ok that's cool it's still cheaper than what a regular salon would charge". I figured they would be able to do a good job since they have instructors there helping the students. The student was great. She got help from the veteran instructors who's been teaching for 16 years, so she said. The instructor was made aware that I wanted a big curl instead of a tight curl. She was confident at the fact that the rollers she chose would do the trick. (Again, I trusted the 16 year teaching expert). (Red flag: front desk unprofessional girl asks me to pay before they were even done rolling my hair) They finish rolling my hair and proceed with the chemicals. Once Time is over they unroll and rinse my hair. I notice it's not even curly. I tell the instructor that it's not curly. And I noticed immediately that she gets a little defensive. She says. "You said you didn't want tight curls" I said "yes I did say that but it's not even a curl" She says just wait to wash it it'll all come out it'll look nice. I left wondering if my hair was even going to look good once I washed it. Next day wake up and my hair is like hay! It's stringy and not a curl in sight! I go to the college and ask for the 16 year teaching instructor and I tell her my hair is horrible and I'm sad at how ugly my hair is. I know it's a school but I still paid $65 and it looks terrible. She got so defensive. Began to tell me that it was my fault because I had hair dye and very old highlights on my hair and that's why the perm didn't take. And that I should have known it would be damaged. I told her I don't have an issue with it being damaged because I can go get that cut. I have an issue with it not being curly. I paid for a perm. And I got not one curl! She couldn't even take responsibility for her mistakes. How hard was it for her to say "hey we messed up let us make it right for you" but no she was not about to take responsibility for her mess up. So I got a little upset and I pointed at her and told her she had horrible customer service skills and she got upset that I pointed at her she looked like her head was about to spin and she said. Don't you point that finger at me. I pointed anyway. She wasn't going to intimidate me with her deep rude tone. I don't scare easy. I finally walked out because I knew I was wasting my time she was not about to fix the issue. I realize that the only thing they teach is how to argue with the customer because they don't offer a great education so they gotta teach how to say "screw you" to the customers. I can only hope that those students have better sense than that instructor. I noticed a lot of people don't teach good customer service skills. Everyone wants to run businesses but don't care to eke the clients happy. It's really quite sad. Lesson learned. Don't go to a local no name cosmo school. This is no Paul Mitchell. This is Ghetto raza running the place. They don't care about their clients. Cheap or not cheap you still have to have some kind of good customer service. It's a shame Bcz there are a lot of good people going to those schools. Again, My rating is on the service the instructor gave me Not the student who did my hair. The student by the way was very kind and talkative. Side notes: the front desk girls (not sure if they are employees or students) don't know anything. Can't answer simple questions without looking at each other and laughing like 10 year old girls. They are not educated in their line of work. They don't know much about pricing or what they offer.
